How to complete "Eliminate 12 Sentry Skimmers" the intended way?

You'll be waiting a very long time, FYI
I thought there was a dev post somewhere saying that relog is intended gameplay. I can't find it, instead, I find a bunch of references to it across several similar threads.

Either way, it seems FDev has said their piece, and there have even been CGs where you have to re-log to be competitive.

As I understand, they only ever said it was
1) not considered an exploit (except in combat and until they forgot it was a thing when designing powerplay 2.0 activities) and
2) the first recommended step for troubleshooting problems

Even FDEV can't declare something that is clearly in no way 'gameplay' "intended gameplay." They have authority over ED TOS, not over the English Language. "Relog" and "gameplay" have contradictory meanings.

So the intended way, if you don't relog-destroy them at a surface settlement:

  • fly around over 2km above the planet surface (pref just in one direction)
  • Look for blue circles to appear on the scanner (indicate POI nearby)
  • Drop down in your SRV to pinpoint the location (might be a few salvage cans)
  • When you get in range, generally, skimmers will spawn

Note, you need to do this on the same body/within the same jurisdiction as the target... which it will be if you're near the base.

Like already said, horizon settlements and horizon POI?
The POI you should get with Surface Scanner, or visit the Nav Beacon.
It's all happening in Odyssey. There is no POIs after scanning the surface. I was surprised there weren't any at all.
Don't remember what the POI are called, something like crashed ship? The horizon ones are those without the number in (), with the useless cargo canisters... they spawn 3 or 4 skimmers, so 4 of those should do the job?
I know which ones you mean, but so fat I haven't found a single one.
Old horizon settlements respawn sentry skimmers

The missions should not go to EDO settlements.
I agree. This seems like a bug or someone forgot to add a filter for compatible mission targets.
I wouldn't be surprised if the wave scanner is bugged now, but usually you have high peak signals for ships, structures or skimmers, in contrast to low peak signals for mats. If you never used the scanner, you'll have to familiarize yourself with it. It is not straight-forward.
I'm very familiar with wave scanner, I came to the game around the time Horizons came out.
Unfortunately the immediate vicinity of the settlement is completely devoid of signals other than my ship and the base itself.
  • fly around over 2km above the planet surface (pref just in one direction)
  • Look for blue circles to appear on the scanner (indicate POI nearby)
I will try flying around a bit further and see if I can locate anything else, but I don't have high hopes. But so far no blue circles.

In general, the longer I analyse the situation, the more it seems it's most likely a bug related to mission target selection, cause all around opinions (including other sources) are consistent with what GroG79 said: "The missions should not go to EDO settlements."

If any FDev employee read this, can you shed some light on the subject please?

UPDATE:
After I came back to the game, several POIs have spawned on the surface of the target body, that weren't there before when I did the surface scan.
Two of the POIs were "Irregular markers", which are the aforementioned cargo stashes guarded by skimmers. Both belonged to the target faction, and all skimmers counted as mission targets.

This would seem to be the intended way of completing this kind of mission.
The issue was the POIs not spawning at first. Only after re-log. Also terrible information communication form FDev, as it was not clear that ANY skimmer from this faction, not only the one from target settlement count towards the mission.

Thank you all for a very productive discussion and for your input. ;)

all depends if it on a odessy planet or horizon planet, odessy planets put you to settlment, horizen plant put you to a base settlement, there the ones you want for the skimmers, check youre mission before you take it,i found that out a few monthes ago when for a change id do some planet work again, odessy just doesnt work for that type of mission as said 1 skimmer,on the horizen type planet its a fight to get through, give it a shot you will see the difference.

Ah that's right, sorry, i think that mechanism replaced the blue circles. Been ages since I've done these missions because they're rare spawns compared to when they first came in the game.

How am I suppose to destroy 11 more if they don't spawn?
I've seen a building where skimmers spawn. It looks like a low platform. A door on the top periodically opens, and skimmers come out.
So, if you want to stay "in character" you could wait at the installation for more to spawn.
Look for blue circles to appear on the scanner (indicate POI nearby)
The blue circles were removed when Odyssey came out. The replacement is to go into super cruise and scan the planet.
