How to get the DK2 working

Although I've got mine working in 1.03 I am really hoping we'll see 1.04 supporting DK2 natively as soon as possible. I guess we're a small minority though and the team have bigger fish to fry.

YAY, My DK2 is just about to ship :) Soooo Happy. Gonna be amazing in ED.

I thought DK2 was native in ED? Is this not the case then? Is it fully working with some extra effort on config? Or are aspects not working?

DK1 was working natively. DK2 saw the release of SDK 0.4 beta which significantly changes how programs interact with the hardware, especially the camera that wasn't part of DK1.

Hopefully the next update will have the changes implemented but the workaround posted in this thread will get you up and running.

I just got my e-mail indicating my DK2 was about to ship. I can't wait.

Any DK2 owners who also have the DK1 care to comment on what improvements they have noticed other than the increased resolution?

It is tricky to get working however I found a nice way to sort it.

THe issues I had at first while trying to get it to work.

1. No movement with head movement at all
2. Rainbow effect on text and unreadable
3. black video effect like an LCD bleed and constant circle of lens flare in both eyes.

Eventually I got it running using a handy setup.

I do need Bilago's utility (Click Stop Services before launching Elite)
I set the Oculus DK2 as display 2 (Desktop Extended to it),
I set the 2nd display to Landscape (sidways)
and then I open up Elite launcher and get the game going.
Go into options, Graphics.
Select Monitor and choose secondary.
Set a GOOD HIGH Resolution
Make sure all settings are suitable to your card
Then set Oculus (Headphones) and apply.

Game appears in Oculus correctly and OFF YOU POP!

Took a lot of futtering, but thankyou to the guide I found.. I will find it again and paste a link.

MY initial thoughts,
1. The edges are more noticable
2. Light bleeds through the foam
3. Cable on your head is a little annoying
4. Its pretty!!!
5. Nothing WORKS with it without FUTTERING about.. but that will come.

I think this is a huge leap forward.. but still a ways to go.

Don't rush to get this version...

Got my rift today, followed SlackR's guide (it worked really well for non ED applications - thanks :)) and I have the same problem with no head tracking in ED.

I also can't seem to get rid of the clipping effect in ED - f12 doesn't appear to do anything.

My specs are AMD 8350, GTX 680 running on Windows 8.1 x64 Pro OS.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Well...went through the entire process again.

It worked!

The only things I can think of is that perhaps my Nvidia CP didn't recognise both screens correctly, or the firmware didn't update the first two times or Saturn wasn't ascendent in Mars...(who knows?).

It's pretty amazing eh? :)

Aaargh! It's ALMOST fantastic, but the screen keeps "graying out" and "snapping" the head tracking on DK2! (after using task-killing answer). It's inconsistent and random and unplayable. Is this what people refer to as "stuttering"? Any advice?

Thanks!!!!

Good advice and worked for me. My oh my is this thing going to need a beast of a GPU! Running a Sapphire R9 270X OC 4GB and there's still some jitter. This is going to be the future though without a doubt.

Updates: running at a lower resolution (with "duplicate screen" trickery) seems to really help. Is this a framerate-related issue? Runs @ ~30 fps in DK2 here.

The "gray-outs" also seems to happen when I physically block the camera...

I have the same problems as you (could get the game displayed on the DK2, but no head movement at all). Following your steps causes Elite to crash, however, when launching ED with the OR services stopped.

Has anyone run into this and found a fix? If I have the DK2 attached to my system as "secondary" or "tertiary" and click "Play" on the Elite launcher without the OR service running, Elite just crashes to desktop.

As long as your doing everything right... I find for some reason if I turn on the service and stop it then I try to go into ED it goes to a black screen!!! What I do is reboot pc and stop the services then ED works just fine ....Maybe that'll help

DK2 will not work for me if the runtime is installed.

1. Install runtime.
2. Run the SDE fix (AMD CPU)
3. Stop Services
4. Run ED > Crash to desktop
5. Start Services
6. Run ED > Works
7. All menu's are squished/narrow. No headtracking. In fact the whole game resolution is just screwy/narrow
8. Uninstall runtime
9. Reboot
10. Run ED > Works like old DK1 > Good resolution, head tracking (no positional tracking).

Whatever I do I cannot get the DK2/ED to get on the <AHEM>Ah together when the runtime is installed. So I install the runtime to develop using positional tracking (all the demo's work!) and have to uninstall to play ED.

Thoughts?

OK, I have my DK2 and it's amazing.

The built in demos work fine but I've been trying to follow the guides to get Elite Working.

My Issue is when you have to set the DK2 to extended mode. When I do that the DK2 turns on and displays a small part of my desktop but it's corrupted or odd. like 2 images overlayed. This is set to 1920x1080 Native @75hz and I rotated the display as it was portrait.

I read somewhere that you need to set to, 948x1080 and when I do that the desktop looks clear but still only a small part is shown. also when I do that the only refresh rate I can select for the DK2 is 120Hz, which also doesn't sound right.

For info I have a GTX780 and windows 8.1 64it

Is this correct or or does it sound like I have something set wrong? Can anyone help please?

Shouldn't need to change resolution.

In extended mode I get the DK2 displaying the desktop, open up ED and, if it's on the wrong screen a middle mouse click on the title shifts ED over to the rift display (that functionality comes from an app called displayfusion - rather useful).

Headtracking and positional tracking seem to work as long as I've remembered to kill wscript.exe and ovrservice_64.exe.

hope that helps!

For anyone struggling.

Setup guide by SlackR

1. Download the runtime and (optional) SDK
2. Set up the Rift by following the instructions ...
http://static.oculusvr.com/sdk-downl...ion_Manual.pdf
3. Make sure you update the firmware.
4. Test using the small room demo and / or oculus world using direct mode.
5. If they work, calibrate your IPD and tracking zone using the config app and small room. I find putting the camera on the back wall and moving the desk forward allows for more wiggle room.
6. If everything is cool, switch to extended mode inside the config app. For the moment keep the monitor set to primary.
7. Install Bilagos app and execute
8. Run Elite, setting graphics properties to secondary display and oculus rift (headphones)

*If trying to run other demos, then set the rift as the primary display.

*For improved frame rate, without wanting to sacrifice too much graphically, try setting shadows to medium.

A Un-officlal start stop manager is available here.

I haven't tested it so be a but careful before using.

Judder issues.

Interesting test...
Maybe DX9 is the way to go for those still with issues ... Worth a try at least

So you set your DK2 mode to extended and it displays an extended full desktop in your DK2? What is your res?

Mine displays but the desktop only show's about 1/3 of the desktop and it looks all blurred / distorted. This is in 1920x1080p native @75hz
