How to get the DK2 working

Worked it out (with help), I left it as the 2nd monitor and stopped the service as mentioned and setup ED to use oculus mode.

OMG. I've been playing on a trackIR uptill now and on Rift it's like you are 100% in the cockpit. It's like nothing else I've ever seen. I kept thinking the Pilots arms in game were my own, and my brain was wondering why they weren't moving as I was commanding, then I realised they weren't mine. And the thing is, it kept happening. That's how convincing it all it.

AMAZING. The sense of scale too. It's a different game now. infact it;s not a game, I'm actually there.

Thanks, again, off to iBootis

I have the same problems as you (could get the game displayed on the DK2, but no head movement at all). Following your steps causes Elite to crash, however, when launching ED with the OR services stopped.

Has anyone run into this and found a fix? If I have the DK2 attached to my system as "secondary" or "tertiary" and click "Play" on the Elite launcher without the OR service running, Elite just crashes to desktop.

Having the same issue as well. If I kill the services (with the app) the game starts in a black screen with the server version on top.. can't do anything or see anything.

If I leave the services running, the game displays but it looks... bad
It looks washed out, there's a weird 3d effect, no HEAD tracking or any tracking at all.

I've been fighting this for 6 hours, so frustrating.

I've done all the steps in the guides without any luck.

That is when you are not in range of the camera that that happens.

For example with trackIR you would move out of the camera range and it would do crazy things.

Oculus turn the screen almost white washed over and the tracking stops.

Is suggests that all is good except your camera. Did and I know this is a stupid thing to ask, did you remove the plastic from the front of the camera lens bit?

this is the time to check the connections also importantly you should use the test scenario to make sure all is well between the headset and camera.

That needs the service running, right click on the eye in the system tray and the demo is in there somewhere..

If the demo works fine, then elite should work fine.

Thank you so much for your time to answer.

I got it to work once but I kept having the rift disconnect or something. I would hear the "usb disconnect" sound in windows and my display would mess up.

So I tried to do the "make the rift your only monitor" strat and I couldn't get it to work again (I've gone back and forth between different modes).

I took of the plastic film on the camera, it works pretty good on the rift desk demo (though, I'm waiting for a tripod to come in so I can get it 5 feet back, its more like ~3 now).

edit:

After about 10 more tries I finally got it working again but after ~5-10 minutes, the usb connection to the RIFT drops and it kicks me out of the game and puts the game play window on the "main" display.

I think im going to have to try to play with the rift as my only monitor.. but the last time I tried that I couldn't get it to work correctly for hours.

I have seen the light....

I have ED, my friend has the DK2.

Connected it all up and the DK2 demo worked perfectly.

Started ED and it displays in the DK2 extended desktop A OK, just NO TRACKING..... messed about with stopping the OVRservice as stated earlier in this thread. The obvious bit that nobody had mentioned clearly was that YES you do need to restart it after that.

So if you have 'no tracking'.
Start ED, alt-tab out kill and restart OVRservice
alt-tab back to ED, and test.

Is this what the bilagos app is supposed to do?
Is there a link somewhere in this thread?

Definitely worth the time spent getting it up and running!

This sounds more like a motherboard USB power issue to me. Are you using the ports round the back?

Yes. I have ~10 on the back, 2 are usb 3.0

I'm just using all 2.0

I have saitek x52 connected, wireless astro headset and rift connected. Nothing else is dropping DK1 works fine.

Is there a way to narrow this down or check if its really a usb or power issue?

Anyone with a DK2 on ED find that the stars suffer from ghosting the RGB colours? like the pixels aren't aligned properly? I also notice it on the Orange HUD items, especially the fonts used. Can make it very hard to read sometimes. It's not really resolution, it looks more like the colours are overlapping like when a newspaper is out of register.

Is there a way round this?

I did read that you need to code in some sort of chroma correction into the game and perhaps because this isn't native SDK4 it might be a result of this.

Or it could be more noticable due to the stars being white on a black background. But I don't see any such image quality issues on other demos that are native, although probably not such harsh conditions.

The demo works fine, and the game seems to work, but even STANDING STILL, I get "grey out" flashing intermittently every five seconds or so. And yes, I did think of removing the cover off the lens out of desperation, unfortunately it hadn't worked. ;)

I tried duplicating my desktop and running in lower resolution (it was completely unplayable but just to test) and running a higher frame rate seemed to help. Could it be due to a low frame rate (20 to 30) and head tracking "giving up"? I see there was a new update to the launcher I will try it but I'm not very confident.

Am I the only one getting intermittent grey flashes?

EDIT: typos

UPDATE: driver and sdk UPDATE helped! Still occurs but much less... I will see if this is a fluke...

UPDATE 2: yes!! Updates fixed it! It works and... OH GOD IT'S AWESOME!! Big congrats to the team - and thanks for the work on the oculus. You guys have created the best showpiece for virtual reality yet, please continue supporting it as well as you have!

Received mine this morning - perfectly timed - just got home from a nightshift and 10 minutes later, UPS is at the door. Needless to say that I didn't sleep since then and have been at it for 12 hours straight.

Got everything with ED working pretty much instantly thanks to this helpful and ressourceful community - thanks guys!

ED is thus far the most impressive thing I've seen on the DK2. In War Thunder everything is grossly out of proprtion and trying to start DCS world results in my computer rebooting after fruitlessly trying to switch between displays for 2-3 minutes.

The only issue I have with ED is that once every 1-2 hours, I lose positional, but not directional tracking. The screen goes gray like it does when you're out of range and I lose the ability to reset the camera position, but changes where I'm facing are still picked up. Does anyone have the same issue or an idea what could be wrong?

I've had this happen once, but I've only had about three long sessions on the DK2 so far.

Hallelujah! I can finally read ALL the text, even if I have to lean forward for some of it :D

I posted this in the wrong thread, so re-posting here.

OK so I got a hold of a DK2 and I have to say, I am very very unimpressed. Sure the small room demo that came with the software was kinda cool, but ED looked like crap, I mean really bad crap. My being unimpressed might have been to the fact that I could not get the head tracking to work in ED, but I still just could not get over how bad the game looked.

Perhaps I didn't have it set up right but, but I could not get past the massive red, green outlines that covered everything that was not looking straight ahead (and were still there even when looking ahead, just smaller).

I have it for a few days so will keep trying but meh.

Edit: oh ya, and rotating the ship made the asteroids elongate.

If the asteroids elongate, then you are not setup properly.

See guide at http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showpost.php?p=609750&postcount=2

Essentially, make sure the rift and it's software are installed properly - set your preference int he tool, Update the rift firmware (if needed). Set up the rift as an extended monitor (with legacy app support), use your graphic card tool to ensure that the DK monitor is set for 75Hz.

If you have the new runtime (0.4.1) use the Oculus configuration tool to pause the service; if not use the tool provided in the above link. The key here is to make certain that the Rift camera is not active as it will prevent tracking.

Start Elite, go into the graphic configuration and select the monitor standing in for the rift. Ensure that Vsync is off and that the refresh rate is 75 Hz and that the display is 1920*1050. Finally in 3d select the rift with (headphone or speakers depending on your setup). - Apply

Put on the DK and have fun.

Note that there will be some chroma and colour separation as the game currently uses an older SDk but it is very bearable.

Ya I have done all that, and followed that guide. Well thanks for the info, I will just keep at it.

Edit: so with the knowledge that that I was seeing was not correct, I re installed and cleared everything. Now it seems to work. No idea why it worked this time and not the first but oh well. So it is very cool, but the resolution is way too low. Will have to pick up the first release version.

Sorry if this has been covered before, but will the DK2 get native support in the next release?

Unknown.

They will obviously look to support it as soon as possible but there will be a lag from when they get access to sdk4.x and a DK2.

There was also supposed to be a bug in sdk4 that Oculus would need to fix first.

Lets hope it's not too long though ;-)

DK2 is cool

Finally received my DK2, spent a couple of hours setting it up and getting it going, but all working well! Its quite a bit better with the ability to lean-forward or to the side to read text; but would be nice to have the menus operate a bit cleaner.

The menus for the ship load-out are a bit flat and to the side; might be better to have them facing the virtual user and allow the user to turn their head to see the menu face on. Generally I find reading any text in the game a bit of a challenge using the DK2; hopefully this can be improved a tad with the new dev kit code?

I noticed too that the virtual throttle doesn't adapt to the Thrustmaster Warthog full range, for forward and backward thrust; it has the simple middle ground affair; it would be a nice touch if it could be made to mimic the full range? Very minor on the list I am sure! :)

There is a little glitch with the movement (for me) when moving head slowly, it might be the camera updating/ conflicting with the position of the headset? Basically it stumbles for a split second, every few seconds. Hope this goes in the future updates.

Really happy with the result so far, hope for a few improvements. Enjoying this experience immensely! :)

How did you get positional tracking to work? I've been completely unable to get it working in Elite : Dangerous.

I've finally got my DK2. It's mind blowing.

But one thing is a real problem. The menus are barely readable and the trading menus are impossible to read. Does anybody have a solution?
