How to set chat to global?

So I am to ask AI where best stuff is.
I am to make friends out of AI and wing up with them

I mean Im IG for 20 hours I haven not seen a living being yet...

This is .

Oh and about global chat... I'm sure that there would be "OFF" Button for all of you...

I am not saying there should not be any global chat as such. But yeah if there is one I hope I could turn it off to prevent my limited bandwidth from loading tons of useless spam.
Anyway you asked us where the global chat was we told you there was none. What do you want us to do? Programming it ourselves?
For your information there are a bunch of websites of applications created by the community to help you trading or finding commodities. Elite is just that kind of game and community where most of people try to figure out things by themselves or just spend more time discovering random things and then share them. Lots of things happen out of the game (forum/reddit) and are supposed to remain accessible to all, unlike a chat where information is quickly buried.

I'm surprised that u are more annoyed by people saying "lol" in chat than those annoying fake AI messages like "Help us celebrate our happy day!" that spam all the bloody time....

Hmm, I have something like 300+ hours in game (Solo) and I did not see any liviving CMDR yet. I am quite happy with it.

And yes, there is no global chat in Elite. There are still a few bugs in this game, but global chat is not one of them.

Where to find best trade route ? Best fight ? Maybe you should try to find those things on your own. Or try search this forum.

Not many MMOs do have a global chat. Most have useful chat groupings like guild (not in Elite, thank God...) or "System/Map" chat (Mandatory in EVE, doubles as intelligence gathering) or chat groups (Different language chat groups or user defined), but I've rarely seen a true "global" chat.

And when there is, it's useless, and full of:
SEELIG RUSTY AXE 2G BAI NOU!
GET ELITE CREDITS NOW! (and your account hacked)
I AM GIVING AWAY SPAM. SEND ME YOUR SPAM AND I'LL DOUBLE IT!

You forgot the most frequent phrase from global MMO chats "Gimme some gold plz". :)

I have found myself complaining about some design decisions of ED lately, but I bow down to whoever in FD is responsible for there being no global chat.
If there is one thing that totally ruins every other MMO I have played it it global chat. And the few MMO's I have played that are good have no global chat.
Thank you FD, just thank you.

Best thing I can advice you is to try and join many of the groups that's playing the game.
The group I exclusively play in is large. I have plenty of players on my friends list. We have teamspeak. its easy to find some people to play in a wing with.
And those that is on your friends list, you can se where they are on the galaxy map. ( its toggle able, some still want to be invisible )

Perhaps in the future we will get some kind of looking for group/wing add-on to the game.

In 1.3 update I was surprised to se they added, so we could read about Galnet news, no matter if you are on the other side of the galaxy. So obviously there is some technical solution in year 3031 to broadcast messages "global" they have not told us :)

This game is very anty social @_@

Space is a lonely place.

But really, forums have most of the answers to the questions you seek. No need to bother admins with a new thread for every thought that crosses your mind when there's a search bar at the top right to use. Join a group like some have suggested.

Same here, yet a good point was raised: but about a global chat that could be entirely switched off (ie not using your bandwidth and cannot appear on your screen)? I would not use it, but some other players might like it.

I would have disagreed with you back in the days when the game features were being discussed in the DDF and alpha forums. It seemed a priority was establishing the feel of the game in a way that firmly placed the pilot in thier place as someone in space, with the limitations that go with that, rather than someone in a game in a meta way.
Now that seems to have all changed I see no reason not to have global chat, as long as, as you say it can completely be turned off and would use none of your bandwidth.
I strongly suspect that FD's reason for not having global chat is down to it essentially being an un-sharded universe with potentially thousands of players on line at a time, with no subscription model to support the servers.

The only global chat I would get behind is a Distress channel, to be used only for Distress situations, channels for Powerplay I assume are coming to the game eventually. Channels are selectable in the comm's panel so you can turn them on or off so please FD when the time comes please give us choices.

here's why it's almost certainly not in the game.

1. lack of censorship.
2. They've seen the forum and having that but in-game - live....no. They probably didn't give it 5 seconds before deciding no. And that's good.
3. A subset of users will code scripts to monitor the channel, automatically chat (bots) and use this info to track users and potentially plan around their online habits.
4. Station squatting is already a problem, more so when half the userbase is now using the game for irc.
5. FD will be inundated with harassment reports and nonsense "offensive language" reports due to their very strict communication rules in place.
6. it serves no real positive purpose not better handled already.

So no. And the game is much better without it. Even power level chat is probably too wide of an audience for free chat.

I cant imagine this game having thousand of players. I stayed in system where I spawned. Unless all spawns are random. But few youtubers I watched also spawned in my system. I should meet at least 5-20 people in 20h gameplay !

chat dont need to cover entire universe. How about 20 star systems around me or something similar. JUST LET ME TALK TO SOME ONE.

Hmm, are you playing in Open or Solo ? If you are playing in Solo, you cannot meet anyone.

When comes to talking to anyone, try your wife. Or maybe dog, cat or some stuffed being sitting on your monitor :)

Are you actually playing in Open?
If so, perhaps some settings need changing on your router. (I wouldn't know, mine works okay out the box)
Try the Eravate system - everyone seems to gravitate there when starting out.

Eravate is my main system :( I see army of AI no real people :(

If only I could change channel to more populated one like Aion and other MMos offer... yeah dreams... sigh.

You'll have to make your first hyperspace jump in order to get into Open mode. It's there to protect noobs.

However, I thought you had said you have already jumped to other systems and found varying distances?

One time I jump to system in order to get to base I need 5 min as the base is 200,000 LS away from me. Another time I jump in and the base is 10,000 ls awya from me.

Both cannot be correct, so which situation is it?

Seriously, if you are in Eravate and playing Open and you are not able to see other CMDRs, there is something wrong with your network setup. Maybe router settings, maybe Windows firewall etc.

Spawned in LFT 1448. Moved to Eravate, Jumping between Erevate, kini, Frigaha, LTT18486. Pretty much every Eravate star systems +1/+2 distance from it and doing missions. Randomly when I go to one system the nearest station for some reason is 5 min away (real time) which is very annoying...

Still bottom line is. 0 humans to talk, play, have fun with.

Playing ARk, 30 ping lots of people on server, BF 15 ping. I have 60mb fiber optic. Its not my internet.

500,000 active users i believe was reached last month according to some press from E3. Considering 400,000,000,000 systems and lets pretend we have spanned across 1 million of them (that's .00025% of ED's galaxy) that's still one cmdr for every 2 systems. Now granted people aren't evenly spread out so you should see players in popular systems. If not you likely dont have upnp working with your router or have firewall rules that are blocking ED's p2p connections. Either that or you were shadow banned for being a cheater.
