As E: D will allow single player game without connecting to the galaxy server, I was wondering what people is going to do (when the game is released).

I personally see myself playing mostly online, but may consider to play also offline solo if it's possible to have both things (like different profiles).

I haven't decided yet, waiting to see how all these 'anti-griefing' measures affect my ability to interact with other players.

Ah yes, I had griefing in mind when thinking about playing offline. Shamefully I have to recognize that I would have keep playing EVE if there was an offline option.

I can't vote until we know whether we'll be able to opt-out of player ID. My preference would be for always online, ALL group.

I will be playing online, since I believe you can keep the same Commander for SP and MP, don't really want to have to run two Commanders depending on whether I want MP or not.

I voted for a mix of offline and online.

But that was mostly to keep the option open to myself. In principle I would like to try out ED's multi player, but even on this in general very friendly forum I got strong bad smelling whiffs of why I stopped doing multi player altogether almost 20 years ago.
I would not want to hook up with humans anyway. So why would I want humans in my game? Just to encounter one once in a while? I don't see the point or the advantage of real humans in my game. I do see the huge advantage of having no humans in my game: no worries about griefing whatsoever.

Perhaps single player online is the best option for me. I like the idea of an updating, dynamic, changing universe on the one hand. But on the other hand I would not like it if I decided to to go exploring a certain unknown area and then finding out it had already been explored and influenced by other players. Also I might not at all like the influence massive player interactions with the game world will have.

So I strongly suspect I might end up playing solo offline.

I voted for mix of online and offline because, to be honest, I'm not sure yet. I'd love to play online, but my desire to avoid total bell ends outweighs that by a very large amount. So if the online game becomes Elite: Bell Ends, I'll be offline entirely.

Not sure yet. PvP doesn't have any interest for me and I don't have the skill level or patience to put up with griefers, but I'd happy play online in a PvE only environment.

Agree with Iskarlot on this matter, not a great lover of pvp/griefing but then maybe a couple of my mates may sign up on release so may probably hook up with them now and again so will see. Again i far as i'm concerned he has a valid point re exploration and influence gamewise, it would be nice to find something yourself (eg me i'd love to find the npc i want naming after my dear Mum who died some 19 years ago). End of the day i kinda want to adopt and wait and see approach as the game develops.

Although I voted solo online it might depend on how offline play operates. If I can play as me on or offline I will choose as the mood suits. As my plan is to trade/fight to generate enough cash to buy and outfit a ship suited for deep space exploration and then head out for a year or two either would work for me

We'll be able to create multiple pilot characters for 1 account. Is that what you meant by opt-out of player ID?

Right now, there is a visible difference on our scanners between a PC and an NPC flown ship. We may have the option to opt out of being identified as a PC, meaning we'll look like another NPC to griefers and player killers, two groups of players that tend to make players like me shy away from games and modes that permit non-consensual PvP.

We don't mind PvP, but we don't want to be attacked for out-of-game reasons. We want to be attacked by a PC pirate because we're carrying valuable cargo, not because we're a player, and will be upset when all our loot is blown up. We want to be attacked by a PC mercenary because we sold our services to the other side of a conflict, not because we're a player, and therefore we MUST be more of a challenge than an NPC.

It's called herd immunity, being one of many in a crowd, and it insures that PvP, while always being a danger in the game, isn't an everyday occurrence. Because we're honest with ourselves, and are well aware that we lack the time, resources, and/or desire to "meta game," all of which is required to be competitive in PvP.

We believe that the the threat of PvP adds spice to the game, but constant PvP would just be frustrating, because we'd constantly lose. We lack the time to "keep up with the Joneses." We lack the money to run 1337 gaming rigs and fiber-optic cable for best ping times and bandwidth. Or we don't want to break character or use out of game knowledge, and thus make sub-optimal choices.

Edit:

Isn't both of them online?

Yes they are, but both modes are distinct from themselves, as well as the option to play in smaller groups. My choices to play are Ironman, the ALL group, or solo-online. I'm not likely to play in a smaller group, since I have few gamer friends, and none of them are interested in sims like Elite.

Full-on online for me. This is the fundamental attraction of Elite in the modern age to me; a fully realised, living environment within our Milky Way with real and varied people not just A.I. !!

Im really hoping they do nail griefing and cheats. 30 years givevor take is a long time to wait to play elite in a multiplayer universe

Online all, Iron Man. Given that I will only play the game in bursts rather than grind away every day for a set amount of free time etc. I do most of my gaming in this fashion now as, having reached a certain age, I can never shake the voice in the back of my head nagging me about the million other things of greater import I need to be doing before I shuffle off. :D

I think Elite will be one of those games that lends itself really well to a more casual approach (despite the game itself being quite deep). You will hopefully pick it up for a couple of hrs and set it down again without feeling like you are on a treadmill.

I also plan to play the game 100% socially. I won't be hunched over my desk alone in the dark at 3am. I will be hooking up with friends on mumble and looking to co-ordinate and co-operate.

Have seen that, if it happens I will probably go for 100% offline, since I like the option to ID players and see who is around. Be even better when we can Comm them..

.. no interest in targeting players, unless they are on the opposing side in a conflict zone.
