HTC Vive resolution and  focus

CMDR Valleys and Mos, again it's worth reading through the many threads on this topic and you'd find out that you can download the 'Chaperone Switcher' utility that has a very handy supersampling option that does all the hard work for you. No editing of files needed... just choose your multiplier and hit ok and it will modify the file for you.

I've reached a point I think, I've given up messing with it and Elite in general actually. Haven't played in a couple days. Frontier fix this, please.

Does this just do what we can change for ourselves in options though, or is it a proper fix?

Same here. There's plenty of other games in steam that I've been blind to for 2 years as I've been absorbed in ed. Now though I'm getting sick of being ignored. A few people's audio cuts out since since I raised a bug report at the start of May. Frontier claimed the audio team were investigating (twice) but now don't respond. I even offered suggestions for them but they still ignore me. I've 'only' invested 1,900 hours so far, so I guess I'm a noob and/or don't deserve a response?

Frontier can sort out their rep but ignoring customers is making people leave. Just like star trek online a few years back.

I'm currently having a big break away from ed (2 weeks) as I'm sick of it. We're paying customers and we deserve a response, please.

I'm carefully reconsidering my options as it stands. Fly safe

Me too. I know I am just a stupied guy that brought the liftime update and as I guess they assumed I have a plenty of time because of that...

First of all: I love this fix. I ay with 0.65 SS and 1.8 rendertarget (fury X). It finally looks as sharp as it should.
What really irritates me is how easily it is fixed and how unable FD is. I am glad FD supports VR. I don't understand why they suddenly stopped optimizing it.

Whilst is better than the in game SS option it not really a proper fix it also sets that render target for all steamVR games, some play nice others do not.

I've also found a sneaky comma , gets tagged on at the end making the line defunct until its changed again. I think its upon launching an app that does a render check.

FD are working on it, just frustrating we have no real news for 2 months now :(

I left for a month, as I got tired of waiting around and came back to get an update as a Vive owner. I have been combing through the last few pages, and see people are jerking around with an actual fix!!! I have a i7-5930k, Titan X, 32GB of DDR4 RAM @2800, a SSD. What would you guys suggest my settings be? Anyone running a similar rig and can share what they are running. Also, where do I find detailed instructions for this fix? I LOVE THIS GAME, and now feel like I can jump back in. Any guidance would be welcome, and I would be extremely grateful.

Hi Guys thanks for this thread it's really helped me sort out my Vive. Been playing with the settings and OMG you can get this game looking sweet... My issue as it turns out it the CPU bottle neck, using a I7 3820 which holds back the frames, Graphics card produces some good images @ 1.5 on high and the HMD image quality turned right down in game settings.

Shame about the processor, any ideas why ED is so heavy on the CPU? Open is a nightmare to play in atm, one other player in the instance on the planet and my frame collapse.

Thanks again

I'm disappointed that this many months later we still don't have a real fix here. Supersampling increases is not a solution and is not even a possibility for those below a 980.

Need to hear an update from Frontier, stat.

I just discovered that when you change the resolution by editing the steamvr config file you have to add a comma to the end of the line after which you add the supersampletarget line. So whatever the last line in that stanza is currently, add a comma to the end of it and then add the supersampletarget entry on a new line. DO NOT add a comma to the end of the supersamplingtarget line. Without that comma the setting is ignored.

with a GTX 970 I was able to run steamvr supersampling at 1.5 and leave everything ingame at stock high HMD (or whatever that high VR setting is called) and everything looked great and I could read all the displays. Without that comma adding that line does absolutely nothing.

After adding it I got the best results by turning off in-game super sampling and in-game antialiasing. Not a great fix...but makes the game playable.

I experimented with 1.75 as well - that caused a slight stutter so I went back to 1.50 and no settings changes inside the game...just the straight-up HMD High.

Surely it's time for a status update FDev? Not everyone can runsuper sampling and the peripheral vision bug makes it unplayable anyway.

With my 980 SC ACX2.0, 16Gb DDR3 @ 1866, and pitiful i5-2400 (I have an i7-6700K right next to me, but no motherboard yet), I have been able to get better results than a month ago. Using the Steam Chaperone program, which makes changing the SteamVR Supersampling much easier, I have found that 1.65 in steamvr and then .75 supersampling in game runs well above the HMD High settings. Many settings can be turned up without a FPS drop, but others like anti-aliasing obviously drop the frame rate. Using a different color HUD and taking off the stock foam to get closer to the lenses also helps Elite look much better. At least it looks like most of the many other VR games I have played. There is definitely an issue with Elite and the Vive, but even fixed I don't think people realize it's not going to look the way they hope.

Well if people are expecting the nervegear from SAO, obviously thats not going to happen.

Doing the steam upsampling and and downsample in game the vive actually look as good if not slightly better than the CV1, with elite I don't think you should expect much more than that.

But this is the very first of vr. It's the 12" black and white tv's of the mid 40's.
You can't expect 4k resolution per eye at 90fps.
Give it 15-20 years for that to catch up.

I agree that we are in first gen for VR and that it won't be as amazing as 3rd 4th gen, but just for a second- lets imagine - that Frontier actually do their job and optimize it for the device they advertise it for and some of us still get to use the SS in Steam. Now that will make it one hell of a pretty game, but to be honest at this point this might just be a dream and we might be left to our imagination only (As with many things in ED)....

Honestly, it has been long enough now, enough patches have launched and still no fix from Frontier is poor sport in my opinion. I've shelved the game for now as I can't be leaving my drivers in 4 months old version as I tend to play new games too ;). Once/If ED gets fixed I'll happily return, but till that day I'll take a break as they have too much work on QA for it to be worth my time in this current state in VR as Flicker, Scaling issue, AA issues, Render Quality Issues on Vive are just too many bugs to class the game as "supporting Vive" in my humble opinion.

One of the problems on the text at least is that FD are trying to imitate a holographic HUD, to do this they put a second color around the text witch makes the text blurry, don't know if anyone has noticed that in one of the updates they moved the pop up panels and the target and fuel panel closer to your eyes, you can check this out your self in the ASP explorer, as they forgot to move the one on the right, and now sits further back that the left one. witch to me makes it harder to read that the rest.

I asked the FD panel about the vive rendering during the Q+A. After a bit of shrugging it was said that a quick fix was done, but the full fix required a rewrite of half the rendering pipeline, and this job was sat on a list. It didn't fill me with confidence to be honest.

I play ED more than everything else put together, and ordered a Vive following FDs very clear statement of support. Much as I really like many aspects of how FD roll, I think they are bang out of order to leave this issue for so long.

Yeah. That's pretty much what I figured.
A massive, deepcode problem. I am too rather despondent about much further improvements, at least not until they are due for a major Directx api update or something similar.

So most likely not before season 4 or something ?
By my guess.

Then again FD uses this engine for more than just Elite so it is in their best interest to keep it up to date and in good shape.
