I am thinking HP Reverb G2 is the best choice for me - would appreciate your thoughts on this

Hi all

Now seriously considering the G2 to replace CV1.

(My beloved RiftS broke and amazon couldn't replace it so it had to get it refunded :(. I am consequently using my old CV1 and I am struggling with the downgrade.)
The following HMDs are CURRENTLY on the debating table: Quest2, Vive Index and Reverb G2.

I have put the factors in order of importance (all important!):
  1. Glasses and comfort
  2. Runs on my Ryzen 3600x and GTX 1070:
  3. Adjustable IPD
  4. FoV
  5. Sound
  6. Can do room scale (2x2m play area)
  7. Image upgrade
  8. Price

Here are my thoughs on why I like the G2:
  1. Glasses and comfort: MRTV - MIXED REALITY TV did the experiment and said the max glasses width, which fit his G2 was 14.5cm. My miss' glasses are a good cm less wide.
  2. Runs on my Ryzen 3600x and GTX 1070: you can set it to run at 0.5 resolution for older GPUs and it still looks better than RiftS and when I can afford the better GPU, I can switch it back up.
  3. Adjustable IPD: it has a slider
  4. FoV: MRTV reported a 12 degree improvement over RiftS. Even if his experiment was way off, it is clearly larger than RiftS
  5. Sound: is awesome
  6. Can do room scale (2x2m play area): is OK
  7. Image upgrade: even at 0.5 resolution the image looks better (less screen-door and higher Hz) than RiftS
  8. Price is: a little on the high side

I was leaning on the Vive Index until I saw the review on the 0.5 resolution for the G2 and then the balance tipped in G2's favour.

I would appreciate any thoughts or other options

Thanks!

Yeah!

But what about the Quest 2 with link cable?
I don't use Facebook so was more than happy to create a genuine account for my CV1.

It's cheap and has pretty good visuals. The price is attractive. And it looks OK with the link cable. (Friend has one)
I am just concerned about the ability of the link cable with regard to running at 90hz. I don't see how that can be achieved with out a percentage of quality being lost?

I have a Rift S, Pimax 5k+, Valve Index and HP Reverb G1 all in constant rotation and i can tell you for a fact that nothing comes close to the Reverb.

The G2 with Valves new fresnels, improved mura profile and head slipper facial interface (again stolen from the Index) is going to be incredible.

Carmack talks about the new Quest and its shortcomings (super interesting, watch the whole thing) :

For months and months all I hear is how good the G2 is

It’s not out yet!

OC2 link cable is poor however using Virtual Desktop is much much better.

A fair point but its not unreasonable to extrapolate from the G1 and based on the upgrades they have described it promises to be a new benchmark in head mounted display technology.

I won't really know what to tell you until I get my G2. It should be arriving second week of November, so not long to wait. I will also be getting a new graphics card as the Vega 56 I have will not be up to the task of running this in full 2160 x 2160 resolution. Which card that will be should be decided when AMD give their presentation tomorrow.

That's another interesting conundrum.
I was until recently locked into nvidia cards but ever since they stopped their awesome 3D Vision, I am free!
Looking forward to seeing how the red team does bang for buck!

A good question.

Here is a list of stuff i play in VR and the HMDs i use.

Elite: Reverb 90Hz 1.5x ss (Looks incredible, relies on WMR motion vector reprojection about 30% of the time)
Assetto Corsa : Pimax 5k+ 72hz 1.5x ss (The only engine that enables the 5k+ to shine, parallel projections does not need to be enabled)
Assetto Corsa Competizione : Oculus Rift S 80hz 1.5 x ss (ACCs implementation of Unreal is not very good, need a low refresh, low res HMD to get a reasonable experience, no chance with the Reverb)
rFactor2 : Oculus Rift S 80hz 1.5 x ss (Similar reason as ACC, rFactor engine is not great, no chance with the Reverb)
American Truck : Valve Index 80hz 1.75 x ss (Reverbs top end dynamic range is compressed and the Prism engines HDR mode does weird stuff with highlights causing them to blowout on the Reverb. Also the mura is more obvious against desert landscapes which is distracting)

I wish I could have just one HMD for everything as it saves a lot of messing around enabling and disabling services and swapping cables as the GPU only supports 3 Display Port connections so I have 2 plugged in at any one time.

The Reverbs super high pixel density makes it the winner for me, the level of realism and presence is simply awesome but its not perfect and does have some annoying features especially the cable which is an absolute chonker and a real pita. The G2 has addressed the G1s shortcomings so it promises to be a beast.

I pre-ordered the Reverb G2 Sept.7th so I should see it around mid-Nov. I will be using dual GTX 1080s w/High Bandwidth SLI connection so it might be great. I hope so.

Nvidia: VR SLI provides increased performance for virtual reality apps where multiple GPUs can be assigned a specific eye to dramatically accelerate stereo rendering. With the GPU affinity API, VR SLI allows scaling for systems with more than 2 GPUs.
