I don't like the new ice worlds.

An odyssey canyon I visited in Alpha:

Honestly this is what Horizons looks like on my base ps4

In all fairness that does look a bit crazy, and to me that looks as ugly as a flat grey surface. I think there's some argument they should've turned down the extremes a little, but they've just gone too far the other way.

What they need to do is have more localised extreme geology, rather than planet wide like your screenshot. I mean take planets like Mars as a guide, where most of it is flat and boring but you get a huge canyon in some parts and enourmous volcanoes in another.

Also the planetary tech doesn't seem to have the ability to generate Miranda-like worlds where it was demolished and then clumped back in a mess. Considering we have one it's probably a fairly common occurance and we should see plenty.

This was the idea. They displayed a screenshot of a mixed landscape - ice and rock. So it should possibly be out there.

I was thinking that last night they need bigger and wider building on the surfaces its very boring

. It really feels like different CMDRs are getting totally different graphical experiences based on screenshots I've seen. Maybe it's the settings, though if a CMDR uses low quality settings and then complains "This looks terrible", well then that's obviously on them. I think it's something else.

Tell ya what does make a huge difference...

Switching off Analysis Mode after scanning a planet.

After a scan, Analysis Mode filters out all the atmospheric and some of the lighting effects to make any colour maps on the surface more visible.

The planets look very flat almost everywhere with this mode on.

Switching back to combat mode brings the atmosphere and full lighting back.

Does anybody remember when we were promised this for Beyond?

Still waiting?

my closest ice planet... I couldn't land but the graphics seem ok... my settings are set on High.

From what I've seen so far they aren't. No.
Didn't see any glorious canyons either though.
My aim was to get some perspective on the whole comparison thing because people seem to have forgotten, that there's a lot of boring stuff in Horizons too and it takes a while to find the gorgeous stuff. I've been exploring for a while and visited a lot of boring planets for the chance of a few great screenshots.
I was targeting the bias, not saying planets in Odyssey are all much better. I didn't see enough to tell.
Have discovered a couple of canyons on my next planet, but not impressive. Nice cliffs though:

There were, though, many smaller gashes. Something for the SLFs maybe.

As it happens, and more to the topic - this was a mixed ice/rock planet.

After driving off the ice, you could see the cap back in the distance:

And to keep things in perspective, here's a couple of pretty boring real-life antarctica shots (and yes, there's tons of better ones, but "boring" is supposed to be the theme here):

This is photos. From Earth. In real life.
Elite is a computer game. We don't want it to look like that everywhere and it can't be super realistic with showing us super cool places like we have on Earth.
Ice desert though is ice desert. Boringness dotted with cool landscape features here and th
Ok, you're showing us a flat part of Antarctica. But you aren't showing us the interesting parts of it. I know planets have both flat, and interesting terrain, which makes total sense to me. However you didn't pick out photos like this:

Antarctica is not at all just simply the picture you posted.

I don't like that at all. It's stuff like this that rips me out of my immersion and reminds me that I'm playing a video game. It's one of the reasons I originally made that "Realism Mod", because I hate the "Tron" planets that AM creates. It's easy to turn effects like this off, but preventing the game from turning off atmospheres as if I was flipping a light switch? I dunno if I've got a fix for that..

Yeah, of course not!
Which is why I wrote that the theme was "boring" here...
To quote myself:

I'm on a 2060 with maxed out graphics. If that helps any. I'm still getting crap like this half of the time, and halfway decent planets the other half.

See, when I see stuff like this, I start to get a bad taste in my mouth for when I see the decent stuff. It's a bitter taste. It also tastes like plastic.

Yeah, of course not!
But you were implying that terrain didn't need to be so interesting on the icy planets. When in reality our planet even with such high gravity has some areas with spectacular terrain.

Which is why I wrote that the theme was "boring" here...
Then what were you trying to prove?

Sorry if I missed your point.

What I really don't like right is the "plastic / glossy" effect that some planets (mostly icy ones) have. On the other, there are some amazing sight and I've been on a icy planet with amazing textures / blueish ice. Will try to get some screenshots today.

It's only from supercruise, if that helps. It doesn't switch them off when you're in the atmosphere.

But yeah, it's not ideal......

The point was, that it's totally okay to have boring surfaces here and there. That's what we have here as well.
Another point was, that if you didn't know anything about the Antarctica and I'd show you nothing like boring pictures, you might believe it's like that in the whole region.
Only showing bad shots from Odyssey of course makes you think it's like that everywhere in the game.
If you show off good shots from Horizons those are much better by contrast.
