LOL, you think that meatball in the first image would look better at sunset?I think there are differences between promo materials and in-game Odyssey... but why do people keep using comparison shots apparently taken at noon with the star overhead, while the promo shots are almost all taken in the sunset zone?
Look at the shadows! The sun in the last image is just out of frame near the limb of the planet. In the shadowless comparison images, the star appears to be straight overhead (or shadows are broken).
I posted a lot of stuff here:
The great big Odyssey Screenshots thread
Off to hunto down some more blue atmoshpheres next, and hopefully some redforums.frontier.co.uk
Just like in Horizons, there's boring stuff on planets. It's not worse in Odyssey though. Not at all.
Extreme terrain is another thing, when it comes to totally destroyed surfaces, but other terrain features? Ravines? Sundowns and -rises? Great ground textures, rocks and vistas?
It's all there. I was sceptic at first myself, and maybe I wouldn't mind a new go on terrain creation, but what's there looks really good and much better than in Horizons. And I have seen a lot.
(Disclaimer: I am not talking about extreme features for ship-sports. Really not.)
Horrified because they all have that lowest LOD bug issue and cant see real graphics? For all others with good gpus with >6gb vram planets look great and billion times better than in Horizons. In Horizons they looked like from ps2 era with super simple landscape, now they look truly nextgenish, billion times more advanced, realistic and complex, with many biomes on each planet. Best and most realistic looking procgen planets from all space games so far.Oh, there's some pretty shots for sure.
My own playstyle was exclusively extreme surface flying, so needless to say - Odyssey was a complete game-breaker. Knowing they're force-feeding it to everyone too later down the line is the literal kiss of death to ED for me. Fully accept though; that's just me. Such is life.
I do know plenty of folks horrified at the new surfaces too, but I also know plenty who're just fine with them. It's just a shame that the new tech couldn't please everyone at least a bit.

Your pc is garbage probably.Lmao. Sure. Keep on keepin' on
I think you probably missed the point a little earlier....
They're literally garbage.
You seem oddly aggressive and judgemental over other people's hardware. Rest assured, my PC is well above spec, and has more than 6gb vramYour pc is garbage probably.
I havent seen anything bigger in Horizons with hundreds of times of exploration, so no idea what youre talking about. Maybe you making a judgement too early? 99.9% of Horizon planets I saw were flat pancakes that look like from ps2 era. And in Odyssey I see mountain biomes much more frequently, and theyre bigger than all i saw in Horizons. You seem oddly aggressive and judgemental over other people's hardware. It's also irrelevant to why I consider the planets garbage - which is 100% to do with the flattening of elevation heights and loss of terrain types.
And yes, your little turret-bound GIF does indeed show pathetically small peaks compared to what we're used to in Horizons.
So whilst not a literal pancake, it's comparatively pancake. With a touch of yoghurt shiny.
Literally because space is big. Really big. I mean, you might think it's a long way to the chemist, but that's nothing compared to space.I havent seen anything bigger in Horizons with hundreds of times of exploration, so no idea what youre talking about. You really haven't explored enough then, is the only thing I can conclude. Would you like some pointers to some high mountains in Horizons that you can then go and compare for yourself? If so, I'll provide you with a good few examples and you can just fly there and see some proper high-range terrain from which to base an informed opinion. All in the bubble too, so not even far to go.I havent seen anything bigger in Horizons with hundreds of times of exploration, so no idea what youre talking about. Ugh, and someone is going to present this and say that the terrain generation accurately reflects reality RL or anything we see in our solar system... [puke face]From Horizons, the ridges/canyons here are up to ~12kms tall and gaps less than 1km across:

Huh?From Horizons, the ridges/canyons here are up to ~12kms tall and gaps less than 1km across:

Yes. Those are under 1km high iirc. Minicanyons comparatively. And of course - nearly as wide as they are high
That's a strawman, my post is merely a response to show that bigger stuff currently exists in Horizons, and in the bubble no less.Ugh, and someone is going to present this and say that the terrain generation accurately reflects reality RL or anything we see in our solar system... [puke face]
Huh what?Huh?
and showing that much bigger stuff exists in Horizons.I havent seen anything bigger in Horizons with hundreds of times of exploration,
If you go to ground level (literally, land and go there on SRV) it gets a lot better. Better than Horizon even. The LOD is absolutely terrible, and I'm wondering if they didn't messed up and we have a very low res lod.Found a really nice wide canyon on a rocky world. I felt really immersed hiking through these canyons, and they were pretty huge. I'm about fully convinced that the planet tech is bugged or not rendering properly on the ice worlds or something.
My new favorite canyon from odyssey:

I still get pictures like this on other worlds, though.

I'm 50-50 on the new tech right now. I'm lost and confused. @Old Duck thoughts?
