I don't understand the life support system

The Life Support Module is a multi-faceted device. It is your ship's primary air supply, so you can take off your helmet and breathe inside your ship. It includes CO2 scrubbers, filtration and all the little amenities that make the air inside your ship breathable.

It also includes an emergency reserve system that yes, does feed into your suit in the event that primary life support fails - such as when your canopy shatters and the atmosphere inside the ship vents.

Nothing gamy or special about it. In fact, it's nearly (un)common sense.

Not really, the emergency has to be IN the suit, otherwise it would not work with the powerplant shut down.

Yeah it makes no sense. Paying millions of credits for an A rated module will still provide you with a fraction of the emergency oxygen that a good 1000 year old scuba tank could give you. Try not to think about it too hard.

Ever seen a air compressor?

Little ones look like this. You plug them in, they make a whole lot of noise as they fill their tanks with compressed air. At that point you can unplug them (shut down life support module), and run off the air in the tank (Emergency O2 supply).

And the only Emergency I've ever had IN my suit has involved the Delphin Chili Cookoff and a long landing Queue at Barnard's Star....

I suppose, more accurate of a comparison might be this:

The Life Support System (Module) includes a Normal Closed relay, that is, an electronically activated switch that is turned Off when powered. When not powered, that relay switches On, which then starts the flow of Air from your emergency air supply (an O2 bottle under your seat) allowing you to breathe.

Does that work for you now?

It is getting more and more complex ;)
