(I find) PvP is boring...

pvp is boring because it often ends up facing "target lost, chaff, chaff, target lost, chaff, target lost, target lost, chaff, target lost, drive malfunction, fsd not charging, eject eject ..."

Yeh, I can see why that would set off alarm bells, it's equivalent to console access. I've never done that. And if I did I wouldn't be surprised to be asked what I was trying to do. The bot is for processing queries and that is by application and approval only. He probably just happened to be reading the logs or watching activity at the time. As you say this was a long time ago, the tool and the attitudes have all matured since then.
this was before it needed permission to run queries. That was a later "feature" added.

I think there is a misconception around, which is causing all the uproar. Namely, the difference between the EDR overlay in the game, and the EDR Discord bot.

The EDR overlay app does nothing but access the database to display info to non-registered users. For registered users it collects data from cmdr-to-cmdr combat related events as they happen, such as applicable system, scans, interdictions, shots fired, and kills, and forwards these events to the database. The database then applies a very basic algorithm based on a cmdr's history, to categorize them somewhere in the lawful -> outlaw range. This data is then in turn distributed to the registered and non-registered users.
Additionally it has some cool features like looking up nearest mats trader, telling you what materials should be available based on state of the system you entered, and also raw materials if they are above a certain % treshold in one of the planets (which is collected from Inara iirc, but don't hold me to exactly where it gets that info).
That is the EDR plugin for EDMC, and hence in-game feature in a nutshell.

The EDR Discord bot is similar, but you can more actively request information about other cmdrs by direct query similar to other bots around. The reply will give you some basic information on the cmdr, like their Inara profile (if one exists), the algorithm based lawful->outlaw category, and some newly added info on bounty history, ship history etc. Basically a snapshot of the cmdrs history and a qualified guess as to what their playstyle is.
Like all other Discord bots it needs read access to the channel it is placed in for it to be able to see the user query. This is why you should always quarantine all bots in your Discord, unless you explicitly trust the source to a fault, to only the channels where it's absolutely needed. The EDR Discord bot is no different in that respect, as that's the entire principle of all Discord bots. Afaik it has however been limited to a select few Discords, and by application only, because it was never intended to be present in all Elite Discords as a look-up tool. It was meant for exactly what Jason alludes to in a previous post; fix the lack of cmdr history available in the game to give an indication of what legal status is most applicable to the cmdr in question based on their scanned history inside the game.

So, when discussing EDR it's atleast useful to specify which of the two it is, as they are based on the same data, but their behaviour and application is not.

Argendo, you are forgetting the real time tracking of players that EDR will do. And it only tracks "outlaws" while redacting "lawfuls."

Are you talking about the "Last seen..." information from the query? That's really not real-time, as there is some caching involved for all that info afaik. And that bot was made by a Bounty Hunter for Bounty Hunters, so having the "last seen" for lawfuls redacted isn't really an issue for the intended users ;)

I find it ironic that 99% of the posts in this thread have been about external tools rather than the PvP mechanisms provided by the game itself. It kinda proves my point...
Actually those mechanisms are in game already, but carebear friendly design and opposition of solo oriented players prevent pvp from becoming meaningful and relate somehow to territory in game. Power play should be natural arena of spontaneous and meaningful pvp, but FD is scared of at least giving initiative to make PP stuff in open or enforcing open only entirely. Game require combat rebalance, current state is also victim of carebear friendly design, invincible shields, long cool down on grom bombs, huge afford has been made to make game EXTREMALY easy in both pve and escapes in pvp as long as player have access to some engineering, it's all by design.

Elephant Butt Leather, Purple Haired Heroes, Russian StigBots -- it dawns on me that I've written much of ED's more recent Lore since joining this forum :p

Though I'll never be as famous as that Bazooka guy everyone loves so much

Main game PvP is a joke with no purpose.

Many gankers in CGs? Gankers want to gank, not to do any proper PvP. They only want to do seal clubbing, they high wake as soon as they get challenged. They don't want to risk dying.

Its fine to have fun. But that kind of fun is the equivalent of a lion attacking a kitten. As a cat lover I am strongly opposed to this.

Shameless plug to make PvP great again:

Again? It was never great to begin with

Visited the Golconda for my first time earlier today in my exploration Mamba and was torpedoed just as I scanned the last log uplink...starting a fight that lasted 30 minutes before I was able to read them.

Certainly could have been bit boring for spectators when my CMDR was nailed with the second volley of torpedoes and had to withdraw for several minutes to repair and restore his shields. Still, despite some mechanisms that I don't particularly enjoy, I find encounters like these to be a fun, educational, and suitably organic.

Regarding the educational part, I always try to identify my mistakes and make an effort to correct them. In this particular case the ones that stood out were:

1. Being too stingy with my heatsinks early on...had I used them as I was kiting around the first salvo of torpedoes, they could have lost me as a target and perhaps even reacquired the launching vessel. I was trying to drag them into my opponent, but this was probably doomed to fail as long as they were still locked to me.
2. Not dumping all of my torpedoes in my first salvo. I was trying to avoid excess heat build up, but the first salvo was one torpedo short of knocking out the Cutter's shields.
3. Accidentally wasting my last two torpedoes. I had thought I was on a different firegroup, so that salvo was unintentional.
4. Not realizing my opponent still had torpedoes remaining and allowing myself to be hit by his second salvo.

No matter how the fight goes, or how bland it appears on the surface, there is always something to learn from it.

Look, I can hardly undock, let alone fly a distance of 5 jumps without dying on open. Solo or private group is where the game comes alive.
Like someone pointed out, the game and systems are FULL of gankers. Looking hours for them, then I think you are in a session locked out of others. We are not all in the same session in open it seems.
ED needs to create something new for the gankers to do, and make ganking so hard and revolting that no one wants to attempt to do it.
Yes, I am a bit salty, for open is ALL about killing on sight. and this breaks the game. How about taking away insurance. You die, you loose the entire ship and all its engineered modules and no option to buy back that ship. you keep the wealth, but loose the ship.
Then let people duke it out for a while in open and come back in a year. Imagine interdicting someone, only to loose and have to go back and engineer all over again. and loose a 400.000.000 credit ship. no 20.000.000 credit buy back.

Form what I gathered so far, people are lacking action, they want a game like CQB Arena, but with more ships, they want PEW PEW in space against a human player, they want space quake, of Battlefield in space. They want to sit down, have 1 hour, duke it out with humans in a tight quarter and pew pew. I understand that. But I just wish ED would be something else.

The most fun I have had in elite dangerous whilst defeated by another player, was when someone pirated my cargo.
I got interdicted, and asked to let my cargo go. I said no, and shooting started, I was asked again, and we had a discussion about it and ended up giving up half my load plus one unit over the half, to cover scratches. NOW that is good space interaction activity right there. I lost, but within a construct where I understand what the player is trying to gain. He was a pirate, and I got pirated. Fair. I loved that! Hated loosing my cargo, but loved the interaction between me and a random player.

ED give gankers something to do, or find a way to destroy their efforts to ruin open play!
