I Have Arrived! (Sag-A*)

Good job Coloratura, you caught me in the middle of the edit. Not that it hard to do but, it doesn't happen as often lately it seems.

Sorry, I tend to reply as soon as I see the post. :D

To answer those questions, my ship has a 53 ly jump range. It's a DBX with almost everything stripped out save for a fuel scoop and scanners. I've been out here in the black for the past few days. Once I got to Colonia, zipped around for a while, I saw how close I was to Sag-A*, and thought this was my opportunity to do it. Once that was done, I got an itch to climb as high as I could, and see the lay of the land from the highest peak I could manage, so up I went, until I reached as high as the jump range on my DBX could handle. I'm sure there are higher places, but this one gave me a great view.

I've been debating traveling to Beagle Point, but I might instead head out to the "Eastern" part of the galaxy. Then again, I may just set course and head back to Colonia for a little while. I'm currently using a 3A fuel scoop, which is all I could find out where I was at the time, and it's more than a little bit of a headache. I figure I could go back to Colonia, grab an Asp X, outfit it sparingly like the DBX, but use a 5A fuel scoop, so I wouldn't even have to slow down for fuel stops, just jump, turn, scoop, jump. It would be more efficient (which I like), and it would reduce the possibility of heat damage should I get a little too close to the star (which is so very rare, but if it happens 45,000 ly away from a station, that's still a bad thing), while still having a nice jump range.

There's nothing out in the far "eastern" section of the galaxy. Nothing for tens of thousands of light years in all directions. That's what appeals to me, though one or two stations out that way would certainly lessen my nervousness when carrying the shipload of data I have on board. Something like an automated, unmanned outpost, that would let you dock, but its creators are unknown. Now that would be interesting.

It took me a lot of nerve to go there, but I did it! I traveled to Sag-A*, and brought back pictures! I know that some of you might wonder what the big deal is, but I explained in a post way back about a terrible fear of dark things like black holes, but at the same time I wanted to go there to see if I could do it. Well, I did, and I'm now parked in the next system over deciding where to travel next!

I know this might sound silly to some as well, but I was struck speechless when I arrived. I jumped in and there it was, bigger than life. It looks incredible on a 24" monitor, so I can only imagine what it must look like in VR. Regardless, I was impressed. I stayed in the system for a while, just looking around. That said, I kind of thought the center of the galaxy would be a LOT brighter than it seemed. Then again, it could have been all the cosmic dust, I don't know.

Anyway, thanks goes to FDev for the fantastic experience, and thanks to so many of you for encouraging me, back when I was still a fresh CMDR, to head on out there. It has been worth the trip.

NOW ON TO BEAGLE POINT!

Congrats. I did it back in 1.1 I think.
There used to be a thread to add your name to the list of people who visited Sag A. But I think its closed now. 😢

Congratulations for being one of the pioneers! :D
The thread that lets you add your name is still open, and I added it right before I came here to post my thread. It felt good to add my name to the "wall" as it were.

Zulu Romeo is a friend of mine, and I had no idea he was the first until I saw his name. I never even brought it up with him before. lol

O7 Commander, hope we will see you out at the edge sometime soon. Dead End Expedition will be at Beagle May 5th (?) and then we will wander out around the eastern side. Hopefully we can meet up some time?

Cheers CMDR.

Mission Completed, choose your reward:

Additional nod for doing it in DBX. I once attempted such a feat but failed. Made my SagA* in an Asp few months later. And when I arrived I was... disappointed. I expected some really grand view, something to behold and stare in an awe (I blame Interstellar for spoiling my big black hole imagining). Instead I got a circle in that reddish-beige dust. Underwhelming to say the least.

Anyway, feat it is. Now - GL on your future endeavors and may the void allow you to bring the exploration data safely.

Just out of interest... what does happen when you get closer to a black hole? Is there a point where you start to come apart or is it instantaneous doom?

There's a crushing sense of disappointment! It's pretty much the same as hitting the exclusion zone of any other star...

Congrats to the OP & good luck getting to BP. (My patience ran out shortly after getting to Sag A*)

Nice one!

If you're still in the area, I'd head back towards the bubble (just a small distance in the grand scheme of things) and have a look at the Great Annihilator. Makes Sag A* look tiddly.

Other than that, you could head to Colonia...pretty around there and could offer an exploration break. Head straight up or down a few hundred light years and farm Neutrons, or yes, onto Beagle Point!

Yeah it felt good to put my name on the wall. Just went and hunted for my name lol took awhile.
12th jan 2016. Or 3302 lol
So it was around 1.5.

Well done OP.
I was there last week for first time.
Have been playing since game release, but never got round to it.
Am on the long haul home, hundreds of jump, fairly tedious.
But glad I got there.

Thank you to everyone for the congrats! While I was out this way, I decided to reach for the roof of the galaxy. Of course, I couldn't go all the way up there, but I did manage to reach system QUEMIE FF-A E11 (-85.8125 / 2803.15625 / 25835.09375), which is at least 2,700+ ly above the galactic core, and the view is just breathtaking:

Repped. "I can see my house from up here!!!"

I was gonna say don't forget to sign the visitors book ..

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...tors-List-V4-0-Please-read-OP-BEFORE-posting!

.. but I see you already have. Congratulations! It's an amazing experience which gives you a profound and very real sense of the scale of our galaxy. Also, if you get the bug and ever fancy doing it again, don't forget there's an ongoing Buckyball race for this ..

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/168568-Buckyball-Racing-Club-presents-The-A*-Challenge

.. or, for another experience on a different (but equally profound) scale, you could always try driving the SRV around an entire planet!

Those look like fun suggestions, thank you! :D

Well, I made it back home, and all I can say is... my bum hurts, and there's a permanent imprint of it in my chair. I'll probably prep another ship, outfit it a little better this time, and head towards the far "eastern" portion of the galaxy.
Also, I turned in all of my scan data and discovered a whole bunch of systems, including one of the star systems up near the "roof" of the galaxy! Yay for finding some hole in the wall and claiming it as my own! :D

Do those eventually show up on sites like EDDB? Or is there something I have to do to make that happen?

You made it my friend!

O7

I was actually back out there not so long ago, in the original ship that made it there on my first trip (but with better equipment of course). I had to make a few flybys of the thing.
