I have been surprised.

I comment on what I saw. If you see problems/bugs - report them. Like I was commenting on only G1 vs. G5 rate and only that :)

It’s intentional. There is no bug. It’s pure factor 3 same type, factor 6 external type, across the board. There are some good parts to 3.0; but the engineering and materials trade is a garbage bin fire and endless “it’s fine” commentary just isn’t constructive.

Please don’t make me mute you. :)

Sandro did say that these ratios were subject to change either up or down, so let your voice be heard in the beta feedback section.

Don't see the problem.
Instead of farming the grade you need, you can now collect all the other grades as well and convert them to what you actually do need.
It's a bonus.

Many games have high trade-in ratios. 1:3 to 1:6 for a single grade shift is nothing special.
Multiply that with number of grades and you'd hit the same results: 1:3, 1:9, 1:27 and so on.

So if anything comes accross as a grind (not saying it does), it's because of low drop rates for low grade mats, not because of high conversion ratios.

Now this is coming from someone who liked to solo Diablo 2 and cube up gems and runes though... 1:27.. 1:81.. pff.. amateurs :D

Crafting system standard 3:1

"Well folks, we need to go beyond !"
"What about 6:1 ?"
"Sounds twice as good as 3:1, roll with it"

The cynic in me can't help wondering if they set the up ratio to 6:1 so they could reduce it to 5:1 or (optimistically) 4:1 later, and make everybody relieved and happy at getting a ratio they'd have complained loudly about if it had been the original setting.

Between this and DDs capped at 135% I'm just literally stunned. I can only assume they uploaded the wrong beta.

We'll that will be the PvP crowd ticked off then... (Read Triggered)

Who's next?

Well assuming that is what actually happens... Then you are indeed spot on! [haha]

For sure, and easier to use g3 mats to get those g4 mats instead of g2.
The cost seems a bit *off*, that's all.

The point of this system is that you don't just find G1 mats and trade up to the rest. That would be insane! The point is that you find all sorts of stuff and then, when there is that one material in the branch that you desperately need, you just get it, because you have excess of the rest of them.
It actually lowers the grind time, because it circumvents the Murphy's law of "that one mat that you simply can't find"

So are the "raw" traders engaged in alchemy? ;)

Can I buy gold from the commodity market and turn it into some other element that I need via the mat trader?

Go on... Pretty Please! :p
Think of it as coming full circle...

So is it 6/3 up/down conversion? Maybe 5/4 would be better? Or maybe 4/3 even.

Honestly, no. Do you have checked how much stuff you have you dont care for? And how much useful stuff that results in? 6/3 is super generous and in our favour. Really, try it, it is almost comical. :)

This isn’t really a relevant comment. You can’t step more than one tier up external to the type, and only two up from the same type. Please actually have a look at the ratios involved.

On a broader note, the mocking and derisive tone from people who can’t be bothered actually checking what’s happening is genuinely pathetic. It’s not funny. It’s trivialising actual content that’s supposed to “save” engineering.

It depends on what your are trading between. It is comical though.

Yeah, they only said it explicitly and then showed it in the stream. Surprising stuff indeed! You can also downgrade 3:1. Anyone with an inkling of creativity immediately sees how this system massively works in our favor. As in 'insanely ludicrously so'.

Dont worry though, youtube guides will be up in a few days. ;)
I just watched a streamer who still doesn't see it.

I've always thought everyone had this mindset:"Hmm, something changed, lets see how I can use this to my advantage!". Later I learned many people here dont go beyond:"OMG something changed!!!!!". I remember when FD's BeardMaster wanted to keep ship stats hidden so people could experiment, test and experience stuff for themselves. I thought that was cool: it rewards experimentalism, experience and skill. Turns out a significant segment of our community really cant handle uncertainty and change at all. Its a shame. Soon we'll be back to:

1) Buy this ship with this loadout. Go to place X, use item Y and trade for Z at trader A in system B. Then use modtype C on module D.
2) Go to the forum and complain about the grind.
