I keep hearing people saying you can make 10k-20k merits an hour... but how??

the closest I was able to get to was about 8k/hour via trading by selling 5t at a time.
it's tedious, but pays well in merits.

I tried selling cartographic data - got zero merits
I tried selling exo biology data - got zero merits
killing other pp ships pays about 200 per ship based on its rank but no way it is paying 10k/hour with trips to rearm and repair.
mining is busted because you have to sell in the same system and 99% of the times, those hot spots complete waste of times. Wasted hours just to barely fill 33% of the cargo hull

so again, how do ppl (I have yet to see an actual proof so it could be all lies and click baits) make 20k/hour merits?

Mining. IIRC I get 10-12k merits for 128t load of mainly platinum. Only mine platinum and your gross merit haul per trip will be better. Takes an hour.

you get a 50% merit bonus to your activites if they are activities that are especially valued by the power you are pledged to.

Which activities get bonuses from which powers is listed in this guide by Nowski

it's tedious, but pays well in merits.
yeah, I suggest avoid that approach, or be very careful with it. That's how people start grinding and end up hating the game instead of having fun
Whichever ways you get merits, I think it's more important that they should be ways you enjoy than it is to work at min/maxing everything

I ranked up from zero to 120 in a week by shooting pirates in a haz RES. I checked my rate of earning merits, and it was very consistent at around 15k per hr, though I have a lot of experience when it comes to killing pirates. I had a go at mining, mainly in haz RESs, and got around 10k per hour using a Cutter, but that depends a lot on market prices. I didn't spend any time researching. I just went to planets in local space and mined in metallic rings, picking up the upper half by price stuff. If you're lucky enough to have any of the platinum hotspots in your power's space, you could make a killing.

Mining. A 384 t load of (mainly) Platinum and occasionally some Osmium results in around 50k merits. Usually that takes about 2,5 hrs so yes, about 20k per hour for me.
(stronghold system in boom state)

Mining for merits is very fast. You do need two things

  • Decent selling price (get +150k/ton or do not bother)
  • a decent mining boat
  • Some mining skills
I fill up a 512 cutter in about 1-1.2 hours.

Simplest proof: the top player in my power according to the in-game leaderboard made 2.6 million merits last week (and similar results can be seen in other weeks and other powers)

If they played 24 hours every day that would be 2,600,000 / 168 ~= 15,000 merits per hour.
More normal "top 10" scores in all powers tend to be around 500,000 merits per week, which is still over 10,000 merits per hour for anyone playing ED as a full-time job.

That doesn't of course say anything about how it's done, how long it actually took, or whether the method to do so is one you'd actually want to do for an hour (never mind for 40 or 168 of them) but it shows that it's possible.

There are quite a few fine print in PP2.0 rules. You must pay attention.

As far as cartographic and exobio data are concerned, two things to watch out.
In order to get merit, data must have been collected after 07. November 2024.
Also, they have to be sold in a system controlled by your Power (in other words, you can only reinforce - no undermine or acquisition).
Any other combo = 0 merit.

Mining is still the best for farming merit, as far as I'm aware.
However, that will depend on does you Power control suitable system.
Core mining requires some skill but can be done in almost any ring.
If you opt out for much easier laser mining (platinum, for example) you first have to find suitable system (controlled by your Power, with at least one Metallic, Pristine ring with say Platinum hotspot).
Edit: Might give this tool a try ---> Meritminer

I am a minion of master LYR, and I really tried mining but 99% of the rings I visited , suggested by Meritminer , which were Plat hotspots, had no plat at all. I spent over an hour prospecting rocks and found every other metal BUT platinum. I felt defeated so I gave up and kinda stopped playing Elite tbh.

every YT video I watched of people allegedly claiming to fill up their cutter with platinum in 1 hour were HEAVILY edited to give the impression it took them an hour.
I have yet to see a single platinum mining video of someone recording himself unedited in a single hotspot (not overlapping one because in overlapping one, I didn't seem to have that issue)

I have got about 15-25k per hour via core mining, but it requires a system controlled by your power that has a station that's buying the stuff for huge sums (500k or more credits per unit) as well as a planetary ring where you can mine. The amount of merits you get is directly proportional to how much you earn from selling the stuff you mine, and thus you get most merits in systems with a station that pays a lot for it.

One of my squad mates asked me how many merits I made per hour, so I did a tiny sample of one trip to a HazRes. It took me right at 30 minutes to run out of ammo and I got a tad over 6k merits. That doesn't translate to 12k per hour, since I had to rearm and return. I also tend to take breaks often and go outside for a cigar and such.

So bounty hunting is an enjoyable method that nets a decent amount.

<edit> That test was solo. The bounties and merits come much faster when teamed up with your friends. </edit>

make sure you are in Metallic rings only for platinum. "metal rich" rings = you go poor. fake platinum hotspots in metal rich.
must be Metallic
