I love ED, but this "storyline" is infuriating

You dont have to read the books tho, i have read half of them and they dont offer anything needed for the game imo.. great for flavour tho

I have been hoping this for a while, ideally accessible from within the cockpit on my ship when i am flying, and better yet if we coukd have text to speech to read it out when i am otherwise engaged. I woukd be far more into galnet news if i could listen when flying, as it is i ignore it

Text to speech would be nice indeed. You don't even need voice actors for it, computer voice would fit perfectly to the game.

This isn't only about the alien encounter, but also about everything that has led up to it. I know that ED is meant to make you feel like a nobody in the galaxy, but making the story line unfold in a series of news articles which are about as interesting as real world news, is not my idea of a good story line, or even a story line whatsoever.

This, compounded by the fact that taking part in solving the "mystery" requires advanced knowledge in cryptography and audio engineering, is what really infuriates me. The chance that I will ever experience anything I'm not expecting in this game is pretty well zero. I've been playing for 2 years now, and absolutely nothing has happened to me so far that I wasn't expecting. The fun is fully reserved for the people who understand and can actually contribute to the mystery, (which is a very, very small group of people) or the people who just stumble across it by dumb luck, (which is also a very very small group of people).

This alien encounter didn't excite me in the least, it was fully expected to happen sometime soon, and I don't care to go experience it myself, because I've already seen what happens in the video. If your answer to that is "don't watch the video" that's kind of hard when there's a big blue announcement on the forums, news about it in the newsletter, and on the BBC. Plus if I ignored everything out of game, I would never know it happened. What are the chances I'd be flying in the right region of space with a UA in my hold to get to experience this first hand? I kind of view this whole story line mystery like CQC, a separate game that just expands the lore, but doesn't really add content to the core game.

All of this has been said before, but with every new "event" that happens, I get a little more angry about it.

Maybe thats because it's a background "plotline" in the galaxy not a storyline. Elite won't have a scripted story for the player to follow, it'll have multiple plotlines ongoing that you can choose to participate in or ignore entirely. If you want a guided story specifically aimed at you the 1 player it's the wrong game. Maybe go to an MMO like The Elder Scrolls where you can hand a quest in to be told "Oh thank you hero, only you could possibly have saved us, you will be remembered forever in our town!", then turn around and see 10 other chaps queuing up to hand in the same quest.

As always Elite is about a pilot and a ship, a small cog in the galaxy. If that small freelance pilot decides to try his luck finding aliens, he may just do that. If that small freelance pilot does not he may never meet one (until they invade and wipe us out). Although he could read a galnet news article about the other cogs that did search for aliens being successful and change his activities to go do the same.

Tl:dr this is one of the few occasions where the in-game stuff is sufficient to inform you of developments. Yes it's in the newsletter, yes its on the forums/reddit. But you didn't have to watch the video. If you were deep enough into roleplay you'd have said, "Aha, there's news coming about aliens, then checked galnet the next few days and gone and seen it for yourself first".

You say "Don't watch the video" but it's the clear and logical answer. You can know there are aliens without going in and spoiling everything. Edited: That's like saying I watched 400 youtube videos of Elite Dangerous and seen everything so I don't need to play the game at all...
^If thats the case you can do that for all games and save a ton of cash :)

Lol who reads galnet?!

Eh, I usually browse once a week or so whilst on my way to Hutton or whatever longer distance station. Maybe whilst eating food where I can't do combat or whatever at the same time. Usually I see everything here or reddit first but occasionally I pick up a gem I missed.

Also actually searching Galnet is quite hard. If you want to find the coordinates of the alien ruins you might struggle. I have been out to the Rift and back, searched Lave 2, (pre permit) located the UA shell, found the crash site and even tried to rob some Hafnium but none of these things has been as exciting as the time I robbed a full load of Diamonds or when I fired two rockets, killed six skimmers and earned a million.

Essentially in Elite "You" are the hero and the story is therefore about you. It's just that it mostly involves watching a timer count down while flying from place to place looking for a mission you can't complete because you've run out of gaming time flying around.

On occasion you get lucky and it all becomes worth while again.

Personally I think my story is much more entertaining than the Goids.

What's really bad about Elite is that the stroyline is absolutely not part of the game. There are a few nerdish people followi g the ASCII text desert, for the rest of the player base Elite becomes boring quickly as nothing is going on and after a few months, there s nothing to do.

If I was to patch together all the GALnet articles still visible in the Game, I (not for my life) couldn't find anything that would resemble much of a "Storyline".

In terms of "What happened so far?" , I'd basically be forced to say : Nothing of any relevance.

Any CMDR not reading GALnet or the Forums/Reddit/Faceplant/Twitter etc. would likely have happily inhabited the Galaxy for a full 2 years and not notice any difference - apart from Features/Changes visible in the Patchnotes.

It will be the same once we are in a full war... I expected full war to happen at some point, therefore I am not excited about it. It's really easy to criticise FDEV if we act like that.

At some point the game is going to end. Since I already know that's going to happen I just can't see any point in playing it. Or anything else. Ever.

The development of the storyline is being revealed similarly to how it should happen in the Elite galaxy. Bear in mind that there are supposed to be a large portion of the populace that aren't aware of the existence of Thargoids beyond hearsay and rumour. There are many who don't believe in their existence at all.

I don't mind that some of the clues are pitched to experts in esoteric fields. But I agree that there could be more inclusion in the task.

For example, wouldn't it be better if the clues were broken up somehow into hundreds of pieces. Those with the esoteric knowledge discover that there is a code somewhere in the flashing lights or sounds, but the code is incomplete. They then require us knuckle-draggers to locate the pieces of the clues. Once all the pieces have been discovered and put together, the storyline can progress.

That's another thing. I like the fact that this storyline is a slow burn, but I think the current pace is a bit too slow. Actually, a lot too slow. It's good to build suspense, and have players wanting to see what happens next, but if you wait until most players get frustrated, lose interest, and stop following the story, you have pacing issues. I think there's just a touch too long of a wait between reveals. Add to that the fact that apparently there's a habit of clues that are supposed to be in the game they forget to activate and the motivation to continue following the stories fades somewhat.

Has there been anything at all found in the Formidine Rift yet? Are there still people out there looking?

On the rift, there's a planetary base or ruin out there that was 'found' as a result of a CG a month or two back mate but (don't laugh) it was bugged and caused a CTD every time someone entered the spawn range for it. So as of yet nobody has seen it and it's not going to be fixed until the next update.

I agree with you that the story so far has been a little too slow burning and I'm hoping that the pace will be picked up a little now that we actually have (presumably) alien ships flying around. One thing that does give me hope is that much of the previous content did seem to be delivered only at major updates, when it was then burned through in a few days and we were faced with a wait of months until anything else happened. It seems pretty clear from the last couple of days that we're now at a point where content can be included in the game files to be activated later without requiring major updates.

Coupled with the fact that the encounter is a scripted event, seemingly a well-done one too and the fact that FDev can increasingly add elements to the game server-side without requiring major updates (planetary bases I believe for a start) I do have hopes that even though there is still obviously going to be a large element of curated content the requires direct intervention by FDev, they seem to be working in the background to allow some of the supporting content to be drip-fed in a more organic way.

I really like it, to be honest. I'm with the OP in that I'll probably never be among the first to discover the newest developments, but I'm nonetheless enjoying seeing the developments unfold as they happen, and I'm looking forward to seeing where they go with it.

Truth be told all the puzzle solving seems to happen outside the game, not very engaging that is it.

The alien encounter was just pure dumb luck, possibly been lying dormant for months and I think shows how shallow Elite Dangerous truly is.

Yeah I agree.

It feels like the "story" is only there for those that can spend hours dedicated to it, and even then just a single person really gets to experience "the moment" and everyone else gets the surprise spoilt by the forums/reddit/whatever.

In FFE, everyone got to experience and enjoy the game. In ED, unless you are "the one" that discovers it or part of the cabal that spends hours pouring over this then it feels to me like you're ignored by Micheal Brooks et al, and you get to experience nothing apart from excessively long hyperspace jumps so they can insert a cut-scene for those that are "involved".

Frankly the things I've seen "discovered" would have been REALLY great for me on my own to get drawn into and discover on myself - it would have been a really satisfying and intriguing game. Instead I just hear about other people getting that fun and satisfaction while I am left with scraps.

For me, this really sucks. Real disappointment as I was a HUGE fan of Frontier and FFE.

The only notice I got was the forum post, a report came in blah blah blah. Sadly the only information actually there was a video. The event seems to be non-interactive so there's not much different between me experiencing it and watching a video. Kind of took the wind out of my sail.
