"I remember when..."

I rememeber back in November of 1972 it was on the Friday after Thanks Giving Day in which hadn't been deem "Black" in that era. The LONG LONG LONG line at the store waiting for their first supply of "PONG" and the console "Magnavox Odyssey" to play it on. Though there was other video games prior for PC's of the day which the majority of people didn't have back then as they do now. The "Magnavox Odyssey and Ataris "PONG" was the first console developed for home use. The store didn't even bother to unload them from the truck the came on. They had a cash register set up at the working end of the tracktor tralier, and though the trailer was full from stem to stern, they sold every single one causing those that were not close enough to the front of the line to have to wait until after Christmas had come and gone to get their's. And just like a new game and or a significant new update will cause on to stay up all night today. There were thousands and thousands that did back on that Friday night in Nov. of 1972.

Hundred of individuals had played "PONG" on machines that were basically pc's in a different container prior. Thus when the home version was made available, it couldn't stay on the stores and often time didn't even make it to the shelves. There were so many knock offs that followed; No one is sure as to what the second game for home use was exactly. But everyone remember's the first; "PONG".

I remember when Saud Kruger ships were good because they were only usable as passenger ships, before the removal of passenger cabin-only restrictions on internals

When Sothis was a gold mine by hauling biowaste 400ly + and people complaining that you could make too much money from it

Shipping lanes. Flying to a station was dangerous, I'd try and avoid shipping lanes and keep in "deep space", as pirates and enemies always seemed to catch you if you took a straight path.
I don't even know if that was really a thing, or just my imagination.

Back when I was "ok" at pvp I'd help people bounty hunting at nav beacons and fend off other players that came along and tried to steal our kills. This was pre wings, somehow wings ended that for me.

Having a viper, then later a vulture, felt like you had a real combat ship and other people were wary of you.

The first time I seen a player in an anaconda and being amazed at how they could afford it. Now I'm more surprised when I see a player in a small ship.

That time i spent the best part of eight hours a night for a couple of weeks, manually eyeballing planets trying to find some poi, feeling really inadequate as people kept seeming to find them in about half an hour after arriving at the planet. I later heard about the graphics tricks, bandwidth monitoring and other "techniques" and vowed never to waste my time looking for anything ever again. Maybe some people found them genuinely, but it lost any meaning.

The amazing achievements of CMDR Zulu Romeo, CMDR Nutter - blazing the trail for fame and notoriety in the galaxy.

The appearance of the notorious The Code, SDC and the emergence of "griefing"

The first CGs, like the Battle of Lugh.

Taking weeks of gameplay to save enough credits for an Asp Explorer, buying it, equipping it (22Ly range; Class 3 Scoop), and taking it for a test-flight... reaching Sag A* on 15th September 3301 (8 weeks there, 4 weeks return, 100 million credits earned)

The UA sounds, and the subsequent shenanigans and the mega-thread "Tinfoil Hattery..."

Aaah, yes. Them were the days!

:D

I remember when all of this was line drawn white on black polygons... as far as the eye could see. ;)

And I'm still smokin' hot.

Cheers,

Drew.

^ When this... And...

When I sat in my bedroom at the age of fourteen after lights-out, 14" black and white TV playing Elite on my ZX Spectrum.

When I was in my 20s, wishing there was a space game like Elite for the PC, but it never arrived.

When I found out about Oolite (and read your awesome stories, Drew!), and played it with renewed vigor.

When I kept visiting the Frontier site, longing for their to be a sign... Just an inkling... That David Braben would re-make the game.

When I saw the news announcement on BBC news site a week or so before the Kick Starter ended.

When, trembling, I joined KS and entered my card details and pledged to back the game.

When I feverishly re-visited the KS site to see if we were going to get the game we wanted.

When I first downloaded the backers alpha and all I saw was an orange spinning sidewinder (lol).

When we got to test the different versions - going from a few systems to the pill and then the bubble (were there any more shapes?)

When... NOW. That's it. I am off upstairs to my office to play this beautiful game!

A cannon viper was the most fearsome ship in the galaxy.

Stealth lasers were a thing.

Binaries were scary.

You had to choose between A rated thrusters or A rated shields on your vulture.

.. the pill. Oh i miss the pill

Which was an awesome choice...

I remember when the twin NPC pilots Cob and Cod were the deadliest things other than Snuffler and Exaga.

I remember when Zaphodbeeble and his brother blockaded Freeport demanding gold.

I remember 'seeking weapons' drop points.

I remember capships mating.

I happened to be inside a capship during a 'mating' once. How I managed to escape despite enduring single figure framerates (possibly even sub single figure at times) is a mystery, but it was certainly one of the most memorable moments I've had while playing.

I remember when powerplay drama generator sub-reddits were still a thing.

I remember when external camera was still some secret and hidden feature of your ship.

I remember waiting for the Icarus Cup to happen.

I remember the excitement of the first planetary landings.

I remember when parking near a station or asteroid was not a good idea as those objects would move towards you and kill you.
Now they just don't.

I now have to go watch the 'Member Berries Car Trip'.

I remember being wide-eyed in that very first Beta... hauling 2 tons of fish and coffee around the iBootis, Aulin etc. etc. pill mini-bubble in... just a lil'ole Sidey.. the feel of trepidation and "being out there" was real.
