I don't have any idea how it ought to work, all I know is that I don't like how it works now. For example, if there's a player group in game, that even have their own faction and station, why can't I somehow join that group in game? I don't want to go to another website, or search reddit, or go on teamspeak or check some chat room that is completely separate from the game. Or even with Power Play, I join up, but to find out what's happening, or organize, or to even chat with others from my power I have to go on reddit? seriously?
What this does is make me feel very disconnected from what's actually going on in game, I feel like to even get a sense of what people are up to, or participate in the actual game I need to check up on so many other sites, and if I don't, I'm really missing out on the fun.
And then there's the fact that people who organize player groups or are somehow more involved in the community are also more important in-game. The latest CG got me feeling like this, Obsidian Orbital. Apparently it's been named after some guy named Obsidian Ant by a community vote. That's cool for him, I have nothing against him, congrats, I'm sure he did something to deserve it too, but I most certainly won't ever have a space station named after me because I am never going to be that involved, and even if I wanted to start my own player group, I can't, I'm not even technically skilled enough to run my own website, and I have no time for it anyway. It all makes me feel like there's a level to this game that's not accessible to me.
I think it all comes down to Frontier relying too much on community generated content to fill out the game. There are so many people who don't have the time , or can't be bothered, or simply don't know about the wider community because it's not in-game, it's on reddit and wordpress. I'm also not saying we should have less community generated content and player groups and so on, it's all awesome we should have more if anything, but I just wish it were all more accessible from in game and not relying on other websites so much.
