I shouldn't have to check reddit to know whats going on

Who? What? O_O
I mean seriously, what are we even talking about here? I don't go to reddit, I don't even have a facebook account... But I browse the forums every now and then. Seems like I've missed something?

That's exactly what I mean, there's a whole other side to this game you probably know very little about, and that's a shame.

I'm sorry, I didn't want to attack your person. I use OP as in Original Post, not original poster.

The tone of your first post is all I'm attacking but I went a bit overboard. I'm really sorry.

no prob dude, thanks for participating

OP - I hate to give the obvious answer, but there IS a place on the forums where all this takes place. This includes private groups, player groups and other info for multi-player. You don't need to run a website, just post below and describe who you want to meet up with, when and where.

Once you get those people together, there is teamspeak or another half dozen ways you can communicate.

Here

I'm not sure I want all the stuff in game. Don't think I want to be bothered with a bunch of things I generally don't care about. Obsidian Orbital.. good for him.. why should I care? NPC factions named after player groups in order to give the illusion of them owning a system... good for them.. why should I care? If I did care, I know where to find it, out of game, reddit, forums etc. Some of these things show up in Gal Net and for me.. good enough.

I get it, you and many others do care and I understand why. I don't though and I don't think it deserves dev time right this second. That's just like, my opinion bro.

To be fair, I know plenty of CMDRs who ignore social media altogether and focus completely on the game. They tend to find out important details from a network of in game contacts. They do quite well, but they also miss out on about 30-60% of the game. And their income suffers a bit too. but mostly, that 30-60% of "missed content" is probably stuff they don't care about enough to know anyway, so they aren't really missing, so much skipping. I envy that kind of mindset, because I have to know everything there is to know whether it's useful information about the game, or just cool trivia. It's often hard to tell the difference, and I like it that way :)

There is no one single correct way, or "best way "to approach Elite though. That is one of the beautiful things about Elite: every plays their own game, but together.

Well said.

Do you think putting information about all the stuff going on with the game in there somewhere would interfere with that one beautiful thing? I'm of the opinion that too much in game information about player events in games create an environment of needless stress for a lot of people. Like a constant reminder of they missing out on things. This, imho, would interfere with the premise of Elite.

What IS really going on anyway? I don't believe there's actually anything notable that isn't already reported in game. Unless you count community organized events, which I don't since I'm a loner and only care about what's been implemented by the developers and not what CMDR Joe and his Armada of Joes are doing. I did however, participate in Power Play in a way that was working with others in the community, you'd be surprised how many people don't really want to work together in game. I'm fine with this as it can all be done in Solo.

Late to this - but repped the op as not only do I agree , but it touches on something I've seen creeping into a lot of online games. having to go to Facebook and Twitter to find out if servers are actually up ? - have had to that in recent times with ED, Lotro, and Elder Scrolls online.
Game company's - your number one point of contact for your customers outside of the actual game should be your own forums.

You don't have to go to reddit, while they are named after outside player groups the minor faction themselfs are still npc factions like any other minor faction and work like them. You can run mission and other stuff to get allied to them, beyond that there is no other form of joining these npc factions.

I like you. Your posts are almost always great. :)

Where can I find these missing 60%? What do people do to get involved, search facebook, twitter, reddit AND youtube every day? I mean, I play Elite (and I play a lot). I know most of the tricks and the way to make a decent living in the game (without using any unintended money-grabbing-bugs-of-the month such as long range smuggling or finding luxuries). I read the forum but where was this vote for station name? I made top 10% in most of those CG's and I had no idea there was a vote. It could have been on the forum and I missed it, my problem in that case perhaps even if I think it should have been noted in Galnet at least... But where do I go to learn more?
This meta-game is really great in principle. Playing together no matter how you play - I love that idea. But I think the 'community content' that has an impact in the game really needs to be concentrated in a media channel managed by FD so that it can be accessible for every player.

Not necessarily. Because you could always take the Zen approach and just ignore the goal and focus on the community aspects. Or just ignore all of it and follow your own serendipity. Money is like water in this game. So you can never really fall behind or miss out, and there is always enough to anything you could ever want to do. Even in a sidewinder.

That being said, I completely understand why it would be hard to put the fomo aside. Impossible in my case. Especially with things like the insane developments in the UA mystery.

I have absolutely nothing against people starting groups outside the game, all power to them, I just wish FD made it easier for me to access these player groups in game and not need to go out of game

Could you please make up your mind? :p

Everquest (the original) added a feature on one of their mid-life updates that allowed internet browsers to be opened in-game. This allowed for safe searching of information and forum browsing while still technically being in-game and aware of what was going on. The browser window could be resized and made transparent. There is no reason this same type of feature can't be added to ED. Either as an option beneath station services or a new tab under the contact tab of window #1, it should be done!

Valid points there...

If it wasn't for external sources - ELITE would leave its Players literally dying due to lack of even the most basic Information.

Never understood why, but in terms of the "Information age" - ELITE 3301a.d. rather plays like ELITE 1101a.d.
And even in the 12th century, one could mail a written letter to get Commodity Quotes from distant market places - and actually get a response.
Strangely I can't do that while sitting in a 34th century FTL space ship and Galaxy-wide FTL communications (?!)

Aww thanks :)

As for main sources of info:

  • The stickies at the top of this forum are a great place to start (that is where things like community votes are).
  • The Dev Update forum often hides nuggets (like developer videos and interviews, and live streams)
  • the news letters usually just recap the dev updates and contain extra visual media and historical community highlights
  • David Brabens personal YouTube channel is a gold mine
  • reddit always has the lowdown on just about any question you might have
  • Obsidian Ants YouTube page is actually a great source for general info, and is usually kept very current, the comments section has plenty of interesting advice and corrections too
  • the UA mystery thread while epic does contain some fascinating info with huge implications about the future of Elite
  • click on devs to read their post history, they often post important info in obscure corners of the forum
  • to get the best info on PVP survival, talk to people who are experienced PVPers and are well versed in the ship you are interested in using, and the most current and upcoming meta.

This is a starters list for getting obsessed with ED, but really your best asset is your own curiosity.

I agree with the OP. I visit these forums on a daily basis, same goes for Galnet and I check the community site every couple of days.

I don't make a secret of just not bothering with twitter, disliking reddit and flat out refusing to ever visit facebook. However, I don't care about what any self-imposed third party site high command says or what any minor player faction does. If I did I could just look it up - it doesn't require any registration or anything after all.

I'd say it becomes a bit problematic as soon as actually useful information by support or devs are posted on third party without crossposting it here. The lack of ingame information is bad enough as it is, but everything should be available in one place and that place should be the game, developers website and the associated forums for obvious reasons.

If you have steam you can do this now by using shift+tab.
