I think I've figured out how to slow down my progress on my next save so I actually enjoy the game again.

If you're the kind of person who might play an RPG through three times using completely different characters just because it offers a different progression and gameplay experience despite ultimately following the same story, or might play through a squad-based strategy game several times just because you like to experiment with different tactics and leveling through tech trees in a different order or priority (looking at you X-COM series 😁 ) I'm surprised that you'd have trouble seeing how starting over in this game and perhaps employing some limitations on your playstyle, or following a particular (I'm so sorry for using this phrase) personal narrative could be appealing.
I guess there's just very gaping difference in perception between individuals. I really didn't mean my post in offensive manner, if it may come off this way, I just frankly do not understand. Loving RPG genre, played pretty much every classic and modern title, multiple times over. But i see purpose there as to see game and story in different light, seeing chunks of content you didn't see before.

As for Elite, there's nothing story related, everything you can get or unlock is completely static, and in truth it's just one grind roablock behind another, blocking either access to content or pure convenience. You cannot really miss anything you won't be able to experience in first playthrough. Speaking plainly, path you can take on your first playthrough, can be exact same you intend to take on second/third/etc playthrough. That's how I see it, anyway...

.. and that's perfectly fine too. I didn't think anything you wrote was offensive at all, as you say it's ultimately an issue about us as individual players and how we perceive the game.

Ah, back in the days when you had to find bodies by paralax as you could not afford better equipment yet and your discovery scanner had a range of 500ls. T'was good fun.

Maybe some of you know this already. On the PS4 you can have multiple profiles. I don't mean Elite provides these, I mean the PS4 system itself.

I have 2 sons, one lives with me, one with his mum. I have 2 PS4's in the house. One in the front room, one in the boys' room. Back in the day when they were small, I used to let them play RDR 1 'online', that had that LAN connection option. So it was like the online version but only without the rest of the world having access, as such, I had to create 2 profiles on each PS4, otherwise I would never have found out the rest of what I'm about to tell you

So on my profile, if I install a game, that game is available to play on the other profiles on the same machine. I had been playing Elite for a good while, possibly had a billion, certainly had my Python. Not paying much attention, I sat down one Sunday evening to play the game but I logged into the wrong profile, sure enough, Elite started up just as normal but it became very clear, very quickly that my Python and money were gone. I was nearly sick. I had to create a new CMDR, I couldn't work out what was going on. It was only when I came out of the game, I realised I was in the wrong profile.

Why am I boring you to tears with this?

1) Luckily for PS4 players, we need only buy the game once and we can run 2 (possibly more, never tested it) CMDRs. No need to wipe saves.
2) I thought my save had been wiped and it is not an experience I enjoyed.

@Bruce Garrido - In Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO), I get 5 character slots (can BUY more if needed) and choose which alt I want to play per session. This would be perfect in ED for those that want to retain their current progress but then want to build one (or more) alts for various role play sessions, be an Explorer, a Journeyman trader, shifting stuff for factions, building up to a Xeno-hunter, etc...

It would work and could derive extra revenue for FD, buy slots up to 5 or 10 max. Maybe choose whether they are ONLY in Open or Solo at the start but I don't know how feasible it would be to code. In LOTRO, they even have servers that can run specific game rules, such as their Legendary servers which run early versions of the rulesets, etc. Food for thought, FD...

If you want to slow down your progress then restart your save but don't use any farming method to earn easy money or % towards your ranks.

I've been playing since 2015 and I'm not triple elite or have a fleet carrier or billions in the account

I'm the same, only recently hit Elite in Trader, never had much more than 500m in credits, assets are obviously higher, but I chose to do certain things at certain times, might explore for a month or two, go and mine fora few days, do some missions to build up rep with a faction, obtain Navy ranks.

My choice, my pace. It would just be nice to have some alts (see above post)...

Once upon a time in ED trying to get credits was somewhat difficult. Trade prices depended on your trade rank and your reputation with the station’s controlling faction. Missions depended on your rank as a trader, combateer or explorer and your reputation with a faction.
Sometimes I miss those days.

Before you reset your account, consider donating your wealth to another player! Fleet carriers makes this easy now. If I was in the Bubble, I'd happy accept your donations. Running a fleet carrier isn't cheap (especially for a non-cherry-picking part-time explorer).
No, because the vast majority of carrier owners completely cheesed their wealth.

They are the last people I'll consider "helping".

Weird thing playing Elite again lately. I know a guy who has a carrier, and why not take a ride aboard, see what it's like. Plus he's headed to a LTD mining spot, which I've never done either.

So his carrier is awesome looking, pretty well done overall with the sounds and such.

The mining was good, I much prefer these new mechanics, compared to the old beaming. There were LTD everywhere, I sold about $150 million worth, accidentally made Trade Elite (I didn't realize that this would happen), but just could not keep going at it. It was fun and I can see the draw, of course. But having more cash has actually been a bit underwhelming for my play.

I do miss those old days of the early ships and slow progression. I figure I'm going to buy and store a few super expensive modules to get my current cash reserves of around $550 million down to maybe 10k or so. Then start in a system where I'm unknown, with a Sidewinder and see if I can revisit those early play experiences, trading just a few tons here and there, no missions. I never did much with combat, always playing to never have a rebuy (only 1 rebuy since 3302)... Maybe I'll get me an Eagle and have some combat fun, and see if I can earn my way up to a Viper without too many rebuys.

If we're listening to feedback, I have to mention yet again that really, PC players should be able to have a second account without buying a second copy of the game. Y'know, like console players can. I'd quite like to see the changes to the new player experience in the five years since I started playing but there's no way I'm wiping my triple Elite account to do it and I'm certainly not paying for another copy of the base game, plus Horizons, plus next year's update, just to be able to do it. Multiple commander slots should have been a feature on release day.
I'd already buy an alt or two at full price if it would not require a different e-mail account. I'd rather give FDev some money for the game proper than cosmetics.
Do alts on the PC require a different steam account as well?

The massive credit earnings in ED are proving to burn me out very quickly.
Two easy ways to get rid of credits, if you have the nerves:
1) Buy expensive commodities, super cruise a bit away from the station, exit super cuise and abandon the cargo.
2) Buy some nice ship, maybe get Reactive Surface Composite armor for it and self destruct, silent run, ram some asteroid or do some pad loitering etc. Then do NOT take the rebuy.

I have no idea but hopefully someone will answer that for you.

That first suggestion just proves my problem.

I am sincere when I say this. Thank you.

Thanks for the feedback - I think a mode like you're describing could be a lot of fun for players who are already loaded with credits.

What I'm suggesting is you set additional goals for yourself (beyond earning the needed credits) to each ship, that way unlocking them might feel more substantial. For example, reaching a given rank in trade before buying the next mining ship or killing x number of pirates for the next combat ship.
Oddly enough, I have actually done almost exactly this, and I'm still sticking to it to this day.

Basically, my rules were:
(1) I have to buy each ship in the game, in order of price, excluding the rank-locked ones;
(2) I have to use each ship for the Elite discipline it was 'designed' for (Combat, Trading, or Exploration);
(3) I cannot buy a new ship until I reach the next rank - at which point, I have to buy the next ship ASAP.

So, because the starting Sidewinder was classed as a Scout Ship in the original Elite, I used its Basic Discovery Scanner to explore (and also to do the 'exploration' training missions, like Salvaging a Black Box, or whatever it was back then). Once I hit Mostly Aimless, I allowed myself to buy an Eagle, which I of course used to do the 'combat' training missions, as well as a few assassinations. Once I reached Mostly Harmless, I bought myself a Hauler, and completed the 'trading' and 'mining' training missions, until I made it to Mostly Penniless, at which point I bought an Adder...

It's definitely given the game more structure, and I don't regret doing it - but realistically, it hasn't worked too well. Ranking up in combat is SO much harder than ranking up in anything else, I've spent most of my time in fighters... which is ok, but it does get a bit samey after a while. Likewise, ranking up in trading is so easy, I actually hit Mostly Penniless after completing the 'trading' training mission practically on its own, and I had to break my own rules to complete the 'mining' mission before buying my next ship.

When I bought my DBX, at the rank of Surveyor, I used it to visit the Guardian Ruins, and I took Ram Tah's mission to scan the obelisks while I was there. I visited two or three sites, scanned a couple of dozen obelisks, then headed back... but when I handed the mission in, it gave me so much experience that I skipped Trailblazer completely, ranking straight up to Pathfinder! Naturally, this spoilt my carefully planned progression... so I just had to 'pretend' that I was only Trailblazer, and carry on as if nothing had happened. (Likewise, after reaching Colonia in my Asp Scout, I ranked straight up to Elite... sigh!)

I am now in a Vulture, in Colonia, trying to claw my way up to Dangerous... and I'm going to be here a while, I'm only at 32%! In fact, I've had to abandon my principles several times, and just game the system in an attempt to make some headway... and my refusal to grind doesn't help matters. Still, I'm determined to do it! I will not buy an Asp Explorer until I meet my own criteria!

I don't know if I'll ever make it... but it's gotta be better than just mining LTDs, so at least there's that.

I guessed as much. Still couldn't help posting some alternatives. Which some may find amusing or relaxing.

I like the roleplay attitude of your post.
Is it so hard just to ignore the credits on your account, not taking the rebuy to pretend poverty and keep things interesting, limit the rewards (money to spend) to what you deem appropriate?

How about "ratchet credits"? Make as much money as you like, but once you have billions you must never let the number of whole billions you have decrease. So every time you complete a billion, you're effectively broke. I thought of this because I think it's what I do unconsciously. :)

Bruce, can you answer a question?

Dropping items to another player is liable to be banned?
I mean, if I drop 20t in 20t of goods while the player sticks with their limpets, until the complete load transfer, will I be banned from the game for that?
