I want auto pilot

You cant ask for autopilot on FD forums - its taboo topic like a external view was some time ago.
On a more serious note - my solution apart from "don't use it if you don't like it" - we could be able to hire extra crew member to help us with some tasks - that would work only with ships that have a more than one seat of course.
Personally I wouldn't mind a autopilot, I don't see a real point of it since super cruise is basically fly in a straight line, but it would not hurt anybody.

When it comes out of a Dev Update or Newsletter nobody panics, because it’s all ‘part of the plan’. But when somebody suggests one little feature, well then everyone loses their minds!

Not really, the drone announcement was immediately taken as a "making game a easy mode" "dumbing down" and so on.
Also I agree with you - let's disable HOTAS because original Elite did not have it lol

Is Elite: Dangerous an update of Frontier? No. It's an update of Elite. Did Elite have autopilot? I'm not an '84er but signs seem to indicate it did not.

Yeah, and technically Elite didn't have much content, plenty of pew pew, and it took bloomin' ages to reach the station while fighting off the bad guys. Basically the exact opposite of what everyone demands now (although yes, more content would be lovely thanks).

Have any of you played Frontier - a game which must be close to 25 years old?

That had an auto pilot and didn't ruin the game one bit - I spent more hours on that game than I can possibly imagine. Trading, exploring, combat - it was all there. You could be interdicted while in auto pilot and that was just part of it.

At the moment, Dangerous is a cut down Frontier. There's nothing in Dangerous that has added to Frontier - unless you include multiplayer which I'm not the slightest bit interested in.

Sorry, can't resist: How about you play Frontier then?

What has FDEV ever done for us?

I hate the idea of FD wasting time on an auto-pilot when they could be working on real content as an auto-pilot is just dumbing the game down further. It does open the door to the tear-soaked "i lost my x million ship because I left it on auto-pilot without insurance and went shopping, the game is unfair!" threads which will be absolutely hilarious though :)

Still, FD caved to the whining miners who couldn't be bothered to scoop chunks so it will probably be auto-pilot next followed by auto-mine and then auto-trade for those moaning that they want a trading computer to do everything for them. At that point the carebears will complain there is nothing for them to do and the rest of us will have left.

FD did not caved to anybody, drones were planned long before. And how on Earth introducing new mechanics like drones is "dumbing the game dowm"?? Elite is a space life sim right? In the future no one would manually chase the chunks of ores - so for me the drones will actually increase the immersion that I`m doing the "space" stuff right.

Not that i think the game acutally needs one, as to me flying and docking is part of the game. But whatever floats your boat - as long as it comes with the usual downsides (invest, giving up internal space) and it deactivates as soon as anything happens that needs the pilots attention, go ahead *shrug*

Sorry, I also can't resist - they are discussing autopilot in Elite: Dangerous. Frontier was given as a example. Stop this "go play another game" nonsense.

You did click on the link and realized that my comment wasn't entirely serious? If someone says ED adds nothing to Frontier he is basically saying that Frontier is the better game. So I think the question is (at least in a humorous way) justified.

Sorry commander, I`m in a bad mood today. I will jump in my Cobra, maybe this will help :)

I'm really bored and annoyed by now.

I'm just waiting for my ship to finally reach its destination.
Then I'm waiting for my ship to finally reach the right speed and distance to the station so I can finally press one button.
Then I'm waiting for my ship to finally reach the station.
Then I'm waitin for my ship to slow down.
Then I'm annoyed by the small dock entrances and the fiddly work.
Then I'm waiting for that stupid thing in front of my ship to finally go down so I can get the hell out of that dock.
Then I'm annoyed by the small dock entrance.
Then I'm waiting for my ship to finally get out of the restricted area.
Then I'm waiting for the hyperdrive to charge.
Then I'm waiting for the hyperdrive loadingscreen to be done.
Then I'm annoyed by the AFK test aka dodge the giant sun coming closer and closer.
Repeat.

Frontier take an example of X3's gameplay and trading model.
It makes absolutely no sense that my ship can't steer anymore if it goes too fast or slow.
It always steers at the same speed, just if you go fast you can't corner sharply.
Also why is there so little to do when it comes to trading?
I have to go through another 300 docking maneuvers before I can buy a new ship.
And Why do you make me buy class 3 shields so I can't do anything but more trading with my ship?

Make shields a reserved slot for every ship and give the cargo ships some reasonable cargo slots.
I'm still just running away from every enemy ship because my ship is entirely unarmed and has only class3 shields because they are just enough to get away, since that is by far the most effective way to make money.
In other words: The most effective way to make money is also the most boring way.
Do something about that WITHOUT ANNOYING THE PLAYER EVEN MORE, the game is boring and annoying enough right now.

I am not against it, but I see no need now.
Once we can leave the pilot seat an auto pilot would be very interesting.

Space flight costs time. There is no way around it or the entire experience of traveling through space would get nullified.
To me it seems a spacesim like this is not the thing for you. You want action all the time. The X-wing series would be more to your liking I believe. Those games (and I love them too) are only about combat action in limited maps without any form of simulated space travel.

You seem to want to remove everything that is essential for a minimal experience of the simulated environment. If that is so, you really should go play a different, more gamey game. ED is not your thing.

The docking entrance is not small by the way. It is absolutely huge. Every ship fits through with ease, but you do need to develop the skills.

I agree the trading needs to be improved and needs more depth, but as I have said many times: This is a game in development and it gets improved all the time. I have no doubt we will yet see big improvements to the trading model.

You really have no idea what you are talking about. Have you got any idea what speeds are involved? Being able to make sharp turns at those speeds would be absolutely ridiculous. As I said before: I think this just is not your kind of game considering the scope of your critique..
Wait a minute... you are not talking about ftl flight, but about normal space flight? In that case this is the flight model FD has chosen. I feel it works well and it adds to your decision making when in combat. Personally I like it. You can use FA off to get very different results when turning.

Yes but only if they change the travel times.

Considering your previous comment I think that means shortening the travel time?
I am completely against that. Also see my above reaction to your previous complaints.

I find it really interesting how there is so much worry over this.

Every flight we take these days has autopilot. Planes can even land themselves.

I play lots of flight sims - Falcon BMS, DCS A10, Flight Sim and I regularly use the autopilot to perform other cockpit tasks when travelling at 10000 feet.

I see the same for Dangerous.

I don't understand the notion of people thinking you walk away from the computer and come back later - that's not the point of an autopilot feature!

P.S I've read the comments about this being a remake of original Elite and not Frontier, but as planetary landings are due, the game becomes more based on Frontier. This isn't a bad thing, just progress. I actually think saying it's based on the original is the devs giving themselves breathing room before the game is complete.
