I wish I could share my style of playing with everyone.

This thread has too much win. You must suffer as I have suffered, impudent scum. How dare you and who the hell do you think you are?! ;)

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I don't mean to stereotype some detractors of the game, well, not too much, but this is what I feel I am inundated with all too often here.

To be clear, I take issue with some things here and there, but largely, the game is what we make for ourselves, and I can't really find any fault in that, for what it's worth.

Case in point. → https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/418015-Adventurous-stalwart-Commanders-needed And likewise, the top link in my signature. Cesspools ain't got nothing on me – not sure what that means. :D

Left a little gift there for ya! [big grin]

Bravo! You sound like a badass man! I read that in the "in a world.../This summer..." voice so it made me think of an action hero describing why hes gonna kick your and youre gonna lose.

I originally pleged allegiance to Hudson for him supporting bounty hunting but as I did not understand powerplay I dropped it.
This was my original professiom before discovering more and more of Elite.
Maybe I will try powerplay. It surely sounds like another good activity.

Hunting down pirates, especially in ice ring hazrez sites surely is an experience on its own. I recommend this to anyone.
The graphics are amazing there.

As an improvement they could introduce small generated pirate outposts as wing mission targets in those rings. Would love to tear them apart.

Also, I am missing hazardous rez sites or in general pirates around this weeks cg.

As for the rather peacful environment I switched into my T9, the Nostromo, to cash in 3.7 million profits delivering Beryllium.

Imagination is everything ...

Cmdr Petula "Pete" R. Kline
Ship: Anaconda
Shipname: Heisenberg
Registered to the Alliance Technical Assistance Group.
2 Crewmember:
Jillian Schneider, former escort pilot from Achenar.
Kaydence Bryan, former Faulcron DeLacy technician.

Mission: cartograph eastern parts of the galaxy and find an alternative route to Beagle Point.

Left Hopi Coriolis port Holiacan System at 21:22 hours on march the 8th 3304.

Shakedown flight to New Growth asteroid base in the Pencil nebula.
All works well. Will not abandon the shakedown crew. I think I like them. Sure I can get along well with them.
The DeLacy experience of Kaydence might become handy some day.

Jillian seems to be talented with the Discovery Scanner. We found our first Waterworld some 3600 Ly from Holiacan.

Found a curiosity: a water world with a terraformable rocky moon.

Arrived at Morgan's Rock (NGC 6188 Sector LC-V c2-28) on March 9th 3304 at 17:15 hours - one week early. The contact didn't recognize me. After I said "I'm Petula", he answered with the right code and gave me the data cube with further instructions. My orders are to head straight east to my search area.

Personal note: the tactics of deploying me at the Pilots Federation Basic Training Center in Asellus Primus payed off. Although it seemed paranoic to let me acquire all neccessary equipment for the operation under cover by myself. But It payed off. Keeping a low profile also helped. Even scans from Sirius Security and Federal Navy vessels did not reveal my status.

Jillian didn't get clearance from headquarters. I terminated the contract. According to HQ I have activated the sleeper.
Leighton Jacobson is now my scientific officer. She has a class 2 clearance wich will be sufficient for the mission.

Shortly after Jillian embarked on a shuttle back to the bubble, the vessel was terminated by the station security of Morgan's Rock. I think I have to be even more careful. I will deactivate all unnecessary modules to keep my thermal signature as low as possible.

Got a Faster Than Light Transmission from HQ. Order 77 was given. The situation gets messy. Meet with agent southeast of the core on a given date.

Found a degraded emission signal. The remains of a Federal Dropship there. I wonder if agent P-G is involved. While jumping out I though I saw a vessel emerging from hypercruise. Not sure. I have to stay collected.

Message 4
Found wreckage while prospecting on a moon. 6 Occupied escape pods. I cannot risk to compromise the mission. They seemed to be very old. The wreck was not recognizeable. I left them untouched.

Found an Ammonia world. Did the Level 3 scan and the additional broadband scan. All electro magnetic frequencies remained inconspicuous.

Encrypted Emergency Transmission:
To Cmdr PG
From AIA HQ
We lost three of the seven Commanders that were working under order 77. Since you are near the search area, we order you to execute order 77. You are now at highest security level: no unencrypted transmissions. No reports of system scans to EDDB or any other organization other than AIA.

Here is a brief summary of order 77:
Objectives:
* find earthlike worlds with human breatheable atmosphere orbiting red dwarfs (class M), brown dwarfs (class L), White Dwarfs or Neutron stars.
* find cold water worlds with temperatures up to 250 K and breatheable atmosphere in the same type of systems.
Additional objectives:
* find Neutron stars within a range of 120 to 150 Ly to the found worlds.
* meet with "Petula" to get a hard copy of detailed order 77 objectives

The members of "Petulas" crew have clearance. You may discuss results with science officer Leighton Jacobson.

Transission over

Hanging in the Norma Expanse for five days. Had this bloody problem with the controls. Kaydence was crawling through all the maintenance manholes without finding the cause. Then Leighton found the solution inside a hidden folder in the operating system. Why do we have to fly with an operating system thats hundreds of years old...

Message 6
Can't believe it. Found my first candidate. Wonderful earthlike with breatheable atmosphere. Class M sun. And I thought this order 77 was wishful thinking.

I support the Simguru Antal. Utopia is the future. Eventually everyone will be in it.

I agree. I am loving the game......in spite of its flaws (which are still many), & I do feel almost totally immersed. Better & more varied mission text would help in this regard.

I hear you OP.

I was totally immersed in the 1984 game as a teenager... just forget the random aspect and pretend. ;)

Anyway... off to get another coffee (I'm using my space legs).

They aren't playing the same game as us. They want to win ED...

And the funny thing is that OP already did.

And we managed that with some crummy wire frame graphics, how can this be??? [yesnod]

@OP are you easily amused by magic tricks too? Or do you see through it and your brain is unable to believe into the fantasy of magic.

To be fair, I think this is the wrong question to ask. We all chose to play the game for our own reasons, and if we're looking at things logically only here, for what it's worth, and assuming we have some intellect, we would all fined the game wanting. There is more than that though, I think, and reasonably so. It's called a willing suspension of disbelief, and the willing factor is relevant. Some aspects break my immersion and willingness to participate in them, so I don't care to play the game that way. I think Frontier could do a better job of it here and there, but I am unwilling to play the game in ways which I do not find enjoyable in one way or another, and I am still playing this game, and will continue to do so, presumably.

Understood, OP. I use my robust imagination quite often in this game. When I buy a book, it is expected I will need my imagination to properly utilize it. When I watch a movie, I expect to use my imagination to fill in gaps. When I play a video game, of course imagination has to be used to smooth over various imperfections in the game world. That being said, not everyone will be pleased with areas they feel fall short. That's not about imagination, that's about paying for a product and expecting it to meet certain standards. Not everyone's standards will be met. Clearly, you are okay with filling in a large portion of the game universe, but some measure must be fairly given in return.

So, yeah, I can imagine the dock is full of passengers as I pull in to land. I can pretend my cargo hold has that damnable vole which chews into the netting holding down the cargo containers of biowaste, and now I have to spend an hour rinsing the whole hold down lest the passengers I pick up for a quick trip to Buffet Vista can smell it from their cabins. Yes, I can do that. I do exactly that, but I see nothing wrong with telling FDev, "could we please have more life in the stations? Everything feels so empty." That's not being angry, it's not being unreasonable. It's wanting to fill the game world you're in with life. That's what the theme of the game is all about: an emergent universe, where you can do whatever you want, and have new experiences.

That is an awfully large promise to make, and the goal should always be to move towards fulfilling that promise. If we all settled on simply using our imaginations, then people would be just as happy with Elite: Dangerous as a text based game, and FDev would have a significantly smaller workload. Probably wouldn't sell very well, as people aren't prone to paying $30 for a text game. Not in 2018, I don't think.

Demascus, I fully understand your sentiment, Elite is pure fantasy and other games are so realistic aren't they:

- In Battlefield 2,3,4 (among others) you had this 'magic' parachute that would allow you to jump off a one storey building, and if you remembered which key to slam, it opened and allowed you to fall gently to the ground then, and this is the best bit, conveniently repackage itself and disappear from view until needed again. And it got even better, you could deploy the parachute, cut away from it, then deploy it again all whilst falling to earth.

- In the majority of FPS shooters, you can get hit by a .50 cal round and unless it hits you in the head, you can still run at full speed. But woe is you if you get stabbed in the little toe by someone with a knife, insta death there!

- A sucking chest wound can be healed instantly by standing next to a medical part.

- Death can be reversed by the application of shock paddles (even after being blown up, hmm wonder what part of you they put the paddles on?)

I could go on but yes Demascus, you are so totally correct, Elite is the ONLY game that requires a suspension of reality to play .....

I see so many people posting stuff about this game. I read rant after rant of unhappy commanders. I really don’t know what it is that those guys are doing in game. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills when I read all the unhappy posts. It’s almost as if they are talking about some other game I’ve never even heard of. I wish there was a way I could give them my eyes and let them see the game from a different point of view. I’ve NEVER been bored while playing elite. I do have some theories as to why I never seem to be unhappy with anything and maybe those of you who feel the same way about the game can tell me if you are the same. I enjoy reading books for fun. I like to imagine what my commmander is thinking at any given moment. I envision things happening as a result of something I’ve done (like when someone is giving a mission requesting battle weapons I think about them unpacking them and like arming for an assault somewhere). I enjoy powerplay because I don’t do the things for merits. I’m the description of every power player it has a description. I don’t fortify systems for Pranav Antal, I ship dessidents who are causing trouble in the area. They have been imprisoned and I’m picking them up and taking them back for Re-Education. When I pin blueprints I see the engineer handing me schematics that later on I give to the mechcanics at a station and they look it over and understand what they gotta do and they do it. That’s it. That it! That’s all it takes to enjoy the poo out of this game. Stop looking at it like a bunch of gears turning and instead look at it like a Watch.

Simple. They've been playing for over a thousand hours and you haven't gotten burned out yet. I myself am taking a break after engineering my main ships, because I just don't "feel it" when I fly around any more. I've done this a few times already, take a break and play something else (Shadow Warrior 2 this time around). I expect I'll be back about the time 3.1 drops to try out the Krait.

Role playing is fine. But this is actually a *video* game where our fantasies can be displayed on screen. My poor over-active imagination keeps pointing out ways that the game could be so much better with so little effort. The best game ever, actually.

And then some terrible mechanic like "shooting rocks" jars me back to the ugly ahh..."reality" of it all.
