If I sold every ship I had, I could get a Python...

Parallel to OPs question, I had been thinking of selling my Python and FAS to buy an Anaconda, but after seeing most peoples reactions it may be better to wait? Glad somebody else has the same thoughts I do OP :D

Depends whether you have other ships as well.
If you're just trading in part of your fleet for the Anaconda, it'll probably be a good move.
If, OTOH, you're sinking everything you have into the Anaconda, maybe not such a good idea.

If you can buy and outfit an Anaconda, you're pretty-much much set for anything the PvE game can throw at you; cargo missions, BHing, farming RES's, combat missions, anything.
As long as you don't do anything daft (such as fly into a white dwarf), there's not much risk of losing it.
That being the case, it's a pretty solid investment.

If you can afford a python you can afford an FDL which is more fun, cheaper to equip, much more survivable and makes cash faster, as long as cargo/mining isn't your thing.

I like Zorgon Peterson, but I am not a fighter. Like, at all. Don't enjoy it, don't excel at it. I play this game to relax, combat is the opposite of relaxing for me. My favorite combat tactic is hit thrusters and go evasive :p

Python is a great ship esp if you could be tempted to do the current CG. It does make a good mining ship but I would not sell everything for a mining python. The asp or T7 make almost as good mining boats for a fraction of the cost. IF you want a python (and everyone should have one in the fleet) spec for trade and do thargoid CG it will pay for itself much quicker imo

Early on, I never owned more than one ship, but then I was only doing ranking and cargo missions (with some res fighting as a change of pace). IIRC, I had a FAS that I traded in to get my Python. When I did it, I had the funds to A-rate the core components. I had about half a rebuy left.

So I jumped over to my allied factions and loaded up with as many missions as I could. Unfortunately, the best paying mission were rated above my ranking at the time, and I was getting jumped on almost every mission. I fought the smaller interdictors, and ran from the larger ones. Those early days were fun, looking back, but at the time I was pretty nervous.

Never needed that rebuy. Well, until I decided to try a conda and got it stuck in the mail slot. Won't ever do that again (buy a conda).

With the Python I was finally able to get my Corvette, which is the only one of the big 3 I want to own, and then I went back and bought a FDL, a AspE, and a Orca.

I sort of did things backwards, but hey, it worked for me.

Only you can decide how you want to do this. Have fun! :)

I've always preferred to have multiple ships for the sake of variety if nothing else.

Only in the very early days did I go all in to get a ship and then it was worth the risk. Now I like a tonne of redundancy, funds for a full upgrade and plenty of buyback cash before I invest.

The Python as stated here is a great ship and probably the 'one' ship that can do it all.

Never sell the hull. You can strip ships to raise cr, but don't take the 10% hit on selling the hull.

Strip any ship but your best cr grinder to get the next ship you want. Basic rule, 3X re-buy after full A rate upgrades plus full cargo load cost if it's a heavy trader.

Don't be that guy who comes back to whine about losing your ship at the re-buy screen

What are you spending on your python. I pretty much A-rated mine apart from the armour (getting heavy upgrade on the current armour) and it cost me under 1 million.

Under 1 million eh? I’m guessing you mean under one hundred million. Either way, that’s not possible. The Python a rated is much more expensive that that, even with light weight bulkheads. I’m guessing your build is less power hungry so you go with an undersized powerplant and a few other changes besides. The Python at under 100 million is either modded for travel or hauling cargo with few defenses.

I could get a Conda now if I wanted, would be poo poo though. Sticking with my De Lance until I can afford good upgrades. And yes I said poo poo (and put and at the beginning of a sentence :p).

So my route to a python was
AspX running passengers between Rhea and LQ Hydae up to around 55m

Bought the python from Borr (15% cheaper) headed back to Rhea and more passenger runs to make some more cash. Comfortably ran with only two rebuys worth in cash early on

Only way to fit this out for under $100M is to have engineered/A-rated parts from another ship.

Gunship for example, uses the same internals except for the PP.

Why not just make some more money, buy the wonderful Python and keep your other ships?
At least the ones you like. :)

Agreed 100%.

Although if I had to clear out everything for just ONE ship, it would be a conda or a python.

Mostly because you can earn enough money quickly with them to buy whatever you want, assuming you would actually WANT another ship after owning one of those two.

If you need to sell everything for a Python, you don't have much, and you can't afford a Python. It's nice to have a few spare ships lying around, good ones. Also a good idea to have a couple of rebuys - but if you lose your ship a few too many times, and can't afford another loss on the Python, at least you have the option to get into one of your old ships, and not have to sell up.

Do a few CG's, get into the 50% bracket for both the current ones, and you'd get between 8m-15m for each when done. Do a few missions on the side, repeat for a couple of weeks, and the python is fully funded.

Z...

I don't buy a ship unless I have enough creds at least A rate the important things immediately, plus at least 2-3 rebuys.

No. Never never NEVER sell a ship. You will always miss them again later, and almost every ship in the game does at least one thing (however small) better than any other ship in the game. You will have more than enough credits months down the line and wish you hadn't sold your ships.

I have two cutters, two anaconda, and a fully engineered fleet of ~20 ships. Early in the game I sold my hauler and my type 6, and yes I still miss them (but I have other things I'm working on, so won't go back and buy/engineer them). Other ships however I DID go back and buy again - notably the asp explorer, python, and orca which I had sold in the past. That's just one set of examples.

I chose to hold off. Instead I bought my first ever Cobra IV, (don't ask how I could buy a Cobra IV, I have zero idea as I'm not a founder, but I could so I did) kitted it out as a USS explorer, and spent the afternoon recouping the 10M I spent trying to kit it properly for the job. This will be my ship to recover engineering materials and dogfight with enemy ships in USSes and low intensity extraction zones. I'm still mostly fighting light vessels, the biggest ship I've taken down is an iCourier. But the Cobra IV is a pretty good poor man's Asp, with a significantly cheaper rebuy than a combat Asp, so it's at a price point where I feel it's useful enough to bring to a fight and cheap enough to risk in a fight.
