If I wanted a 'radio-tuning' game I would have rather bought an old radio.

Can you not see just how incredibly lame the fss is? Point target at blob and twiddle ‘till it lights up.

You guys are happy with this?!

If so then you clearly have a higher tolerence for rubbish than I.

Considering you spend years craptalking every aspect of this game, surely one more thing to dislike wont bother you too much? :)

Having to fly to within 5-50 light of every planet is far more rubbish. Do you even realise how TIMECONSUMING the old discovery was?

Well, that is basically this topic. Most people like the blob-game better than doing nothing in SC while flying in a straight line to every potentially interesting thing. Others enjoy doing absolutely nothing for hours. It is a game, both are equally valid perspectives. FD decided that blob beats ADS, they came to the forums to tell people they knew some would be upset but would do it anyway.

"But I like the ADS better!"
"Okay, noted."

Normally that would be the end of it. But because a certain kind of person has difficulty accepting something happened in a game they dont like, you always end up with a handful of people who will repeat day after day they dont like the new thing, and how the old thing was better. You had a very special person rant for FOUR YEARS on the ED kickstarter page, years after everyone had left. He would copy&paste every negative thing about the game anyone said on any forum on the KS page. For years. Maybe this topic will go on for years too. It really only depends on just how special people are. :D

I find it satisfying, personally. Maybe I'm just a dullard.

Because this makes my brain hurt, let’s play a little Imagination...

Imagine the Fire General Discussion Forums:

”Can’t you see how lame it is to rub two sticks together? It’s so much more fun to wait for lightning to strike a tree and run to bring fire back to the cave.”

Imagine the Telephone General Discussion Forum:

”It was so much better writing letters and sending them by carrier than picking up the phone and talking to my sister in Boston, and even the letters were kind of lame, since I could ride by horseback for three days and just talk to her in person.”

Or how about... Imagine the Penicillin Discussion Forum;

”It was so much better wearing a codpiece stuffed with flowers and herbs than just taking a lame pill when our nethers started to rot.”

With the new discovery process introduced in 3.3 it's now much easier to tag those distant binaries than before, where the player would travel to the body.

With the addition of 'First Mapped' we have a new way to identify that previous visitors to a system travelled to the body, but there is now some ambiguity over how the 'First Discovered' tag was obtained.

I propose all 'First Discovered' tags obtained before 3.3 be changed to 'First Visited' to differentiate old from new.

There would be some overlap where a player may have scanned a body before 3.3 but sold the data (and therefore got the first discovered tag) after 3.3. I suggest for simplicity that these are left unchanged, but ideally it would be good to have the 'first visited' tag apply to any tag gained by travelling to the body.

When out exploring there is some camaraderie and kudos in identifying patterns of behaviour from previous visitors to a system which the new 'mapped' tag will replicate. I'd like to see this preserved.

Lol, gas gianst can be scanned for 1000LS away in the old system, and often could be scanned from the point of entry. That in no way is more 'visiting' than the FSS. Same for all the planets that were scanned dozens or hundreds of LS away.

Might as well add a "First Landed" tag then, and a "First Circumnavigated" too.

Those would actually mean something to some extend. :)

FDev disagrees, and they know better than you.

I base my view on how the game (post-3.3) actually works, clearly FDev understand that there is no compatibility issue because of the way the current discovery process works in systems that are already tagged. This is where the incongruity lies, and why it is clear that there was no need to remove the old modules.

So essentially FDev would agree with my view (that there are no compatibility issues) if they were to actually say anything, and that it was simply an oversight, possibly spotted too late to make it into 3.3.0. I expressed my disappointment that the ADS had not been put back in the first patch (3.3.01).

It's not down to a few people on the fringe though.

Now that it has had a chance to be worked by many commanders, I would be very interested how the numbers break down for this:

Numbers who want to return to old ADS system;
Numbers who want to keep existing FSS system;
Numbers who want the option of either.

Sadly, we can no longer have polls.

Riverside:"They should put the ADS in the game!"
FD:"We know some people want the ADS back, but we gave it some thought and decided not to do it."
Riverside:"FD totally agrees with me, they just didnt respond yet and it is probably just an oversight."
Bryan L:"FD disagrees with you."
Riverside:"No no, they totally agree with me. My idea is great!"

So put it in that thread (if you can be bothered), it's a reasonable point.

And at 200 pages The Dead Horse Society hereby endorses this thread and returns to beating the equally dead ADS.

Got a citation for that FDev quote? You've brought it up several times now & I can't find anything like that posted after the beta was changed & the justification for removing the ADS was removed.

But you didn't have to fly close to every planet, only the planets which you judged were worth visiting. And it still maintained the sense that you were flying in your ship tracking down interesting planets, flying through the system, rather than one step removed from it through an interface.

Shouldn't have to fly close to a planet in order to discover them, that would be required for mapping, just as it is now. No one ever flew to Sedna, but it's considered as already discovered.

I am not. I am interested in what FD is planning to do. And what kind of exploration they want the 'final ED' to have. Because I hope it is a multi-layered system where people use the FSS to spot interesting planets, the DSS to find locations, where you then discover cool stuff on atmo planets and enter derelict ruins with your spacelegs. That is how I envision the future of ED. That is what I want FD to work on. Not work on getting people some old placeholder tool back so they can grind faster through the galaxy looking for a special green gas giant.

But you can presumably appreciate the difference between discovering something at a distance and actually going there?

Lol, you know fully well what quote we are talking about, and your 'it doesnt count anymore because I say so nananana' is growing stale. You think it should be back. FD said no. Learn to live with it.
