IF Space Legs, Atmospheric Planets and Base Building are not part of New Era...

...I will take New Era for what it is ( anyways...), and since I have no clue what it is going to be and honestly do not think I am going to be disappointed ...
Exactly this ^^^

We have no idea, but some wonderful speculation, so the above comment makes perfect sense... "I dunno, but I like the game, so whatever it brings!"
Me too :)

Space legs could also be great for VR. We will just have to wait and see.
It could, but it could also enhance it a lot!
For me the complication is that when I am sitting in a game, I want to be sitting in real life. When I'm standing in a game, then I want to be standing in real life. Right now Elite is my sitting game and Skyrim is my standing game. Constantly going from sitting to standing to sitting to standing will add a layer of complexity I currently don't have.

I haven't gotten far enough in Subnautica VR to experience what this is like. Someday I'll get back to it, but I'm still having too much fun in ED with my virtual space legs butt!

You can then sit and stand.

It won’t be. We’re getting bug fixes, Fleet Carriers, maybe some graphical upgrades, possibly another chunk of Thargoid story stuff, and if we’re really lucky, the first foundations for the next evolution in game play for the next DLC.
Could they really justify the term "New Era" on that basis, or indeed the fanfare of a distinct paid expansion? Also, isn't Fleet Carriers just delayed content and independent of the New Era?

Fleet carriers are not part of the New Era. They are a delayed Horizons/Beyond Era feature.

Based on everything they've said, New Era will likely contain something significant. I don't think Space Legs. I think Legs are a 2022 or 2023 thing, but I could be totally wrong. I think New Era will involve new planets, new cosmic phenomena, and new gameplay options. Maybe even new ships. But no Legs. I still think that is part of an "end vision" that will take form near the end of a 10-year development arc. I know this is not popular, and if NE does contain Legs and a bunch of rich new environments, that'll be great for a lot of people who really want the feature. I don't play Elite to walk around, so I don't really care.

I wanna land on planets with atmospheres (as long as there's a surface to land on!)

Not bothered about walking unless there's something worth walking to
Yes. There's an earthlike world only 750ly out of the Bubble. It's mine! When we got DSS I had to rush out there and map it in case anyone else did first. If we get atmospheric landings I'll be in a hurry to be the first again. :)

Biggest challenge for legs in VR is going to be controlling/moving in VR. There's no universal method for movement in VR, so it's not as easy as just a first-person camera moving around. That's probably going to be the greatest challenge to making it work for VR.

What's a real economy?

Right now it absolutely doesn't matter for production if demand is met. Only BGS states do. I don't expect an EVE Online style player driven economy (as we have no manufacturing obviously), but it would be nice if consistently hauling needed commodities to a system would have an effect on the supply of said station - be it commodities or equipment/ships.

That is very much the key to space legs; not simply having them but having something to do with them. I'd have to hope that one of the reasons for the delay has been that IF it's a feature of the end-of-year update, they've learned the lessons from powerplay/multiplayer/[insert salt source of your choice] and this time aren't going to go with the 'introduce barebones new mechanics > content will be fleshed out over time > oops we forgot about that bit' model that we've seen in the past.

I've said before, if space legs gameplay at day 0 consists of allowing me to walk round a station in order to do things I can currently do from a menu in my ship and walk from the cockpit to my cargo hold where I can look at some boxes whilst sobbing quietly, that's not a £30-£40 DLC. It's something you introduce as a free update before then releasing the £30-40 DLC which provides actual content with which to use the new mechanics.

Given the fact it's going to be five years since a major paid-for DLC for Elite by the end of the year, I think it would be commercial suicide to expect players to pay for a DLC which doesn't provide significantly increased gameplay at release. Not for FDev as a company, they'll be doing fine with Planet Zoo DLC and the Coaster console release, but for this game specifically because it will be difficult for them to justify allocating significant dev resources to any further updates if the DLC sells poorly.

So yeah, here's hoping.

As for what would I hope for if the new update/Era doesn't include any of space legs, base building or atmospheric planets/planetary landings, given the amount of time it's taken you'd have to expect something like a serious engine overhaul and greatly expanded gameplay options within the current space-bound setting because otherwise, I just can't see how they could expect a DLC to be met with anything other than a lukewarm reception after this long a wait. They must also be aware that by referring to it as a 'new Era' and so on, they have raised expectations quite high - I'm not one to go crazy over marketing hype but when the game's developers refer to a future update in those kind of terms, in their financial filings as well as in direct communication to players, you'd have to say it's reasonable for players to think there's literally a gamechanger on the way and they're setting themselves up for a fall if they don't have something truly significant in the pipeline.

I dunno about this. 'Controller relative' is a solid standard now (in both new launches & being retrofitted to older games). It's a decent low/no nausea solution for smooth movement on foot. Has been used pretty much exclusively in all classic ports (Fallout / Skyrim / NMS etc), and allows a relatively level playing field in Co-op (Payday 2, Minecraft, The Forest etc). Also seems to have proved workable for PvP (Rec Room), although that's the biggest untested area really.

There are a ton of other issues surrounding locomotion that are massive challenges though for sure ;) (Total parity with standard play, avoiding acceleration / rotation animations or cinematics more generally, cockpit vs walking, item interaction, cheaty or naff clipping through the map etc etc)
