IF Space Legs, Atmospheric Planets and Base Building are not part of New Era...

Currently if they rebuild the stellar forge they/we lose all 1st discovered tags etc and all data about anything. Maybe some time in the future there will be a way, may have to be as todays tech will be equivalent of BBC Micro in 10 years time.

Here there is a big IF, because tbh all discussions about Legs and Base Building come from an unofficial leak and, even worse, atmospheric planets is purely players speculation.
So what IF the New Era of Elite Dangerous is about none of the three?

Let's prepare ourselves to a B-Plan: with such a "big" manpower of roughly 80 developers working at this project for more than 2 years, what would you expect or wish to see as an alternate content release?
Plan B .... I'm writing my rant-I-quit post just in case ..... trouble is, I have a LEP :D

I couldn't care less about space legs. Atmospheric planets and/or water worlds on the other hand... we still don't know what it will be, i am afraid that it will be space legs, but i'd rather have more interesting things to do in the game, instead of visiting your ships toilet...

This is important. ^^^^

It can't just be something "nice". It must be something that people would be willing to pay (possibly) full price for, and something that can be "gated" away from people who don't buy the expansion.

Things like "improved whatever" do not qualify, as FD won't want to maintain 2 different versions of the BGS, or CQC, or Powerplay, etc.
Exactly! Remember that it's FDEV that hinted this DLC as a new era for ED so it must be something big and completely new not just some improvement

Enormous mountains of salt. Actually that's a given whatever happens.

This, but in fairness to OP I do have an actual answer...
  • Expansion of the Mission Variety for Passengers, Exploration, and Planetary
  • Expansion of Passenger Interactions, Balancing of Luxury and First Class Cabins
  • Expansion of Station Attacks to Humans (not just Thargoids) and Diversification of Station Attack/Repair effects on BGS
  • Balance Pass on all Ships
  • Balance Pass on all Modules
  • Balance Pass on Engineering to reduce power bloat, diversify use of modifications, and material grind
  • Expand Engineering to additional modules
  • Release New Modules for Mining, Exploration, Defensive Combat, and AX
  • Expand Squadron capabilities, create proper leaderboards that go beyond Top 3
  • Expand Leaderboards for commanders (at solo level) and provide awards for this
  • Revamp and Improve CQC to improve usage and justify its presence
  • Revamp and Balance Powerplay to improve usage and incent 'legal PvP' over general piracy and murder
  • Revamp Crime and Punishment system so that it 'complicates' piracy and murder, but does not stamp it out (the galaxy is dangerous afterall)
  • Additional stellar phenomena and interactable logs, generation ships, deep space colonies abandoned, etc., for explorers to discover
  • Additional graphic assets for stations, outposts, and planetary structures to further diversify the look of Elite
  • HUD color changing made available for free
  • Further expansion of utility for Analysis and Combat mode (via new modules) and resolution of "Wrong Mode" error message
  • UI improvements and Key-Binding improvements to allow more repeat key-binds that are context sensitive (particularly for console)
  • Return of multiple (3+) CGs across galaxy on a regular basis, usage of IIs and GalNet to 'breathe life' into Elite once more
  • Additional CGs or content/conflicts in Colonia as it continues to expand
  • Buff auto-dock and auto-cruise computers and make them standard hardware, freeing up the slots for more customization across ships
  • Additional SRVs and SLFs to choose from to accompany new expanded missions
  • Additional mechanics for Search & Rescue board, Addition of Search & Rescue missions that use logistic modules

There's a list to get started with. Far from exhaustive, of course, and no mention of bugs as that's a given. And all of it is just an expansion or 'deepening' of existing mechanics. The most consistent gripe since I've played and watched these forums is this:

Too many features with not enough depth.
New Era needs to add depth to the existing features.
If the new features create this depth, great! If they only work on the existing features, great!

More depth. Depth leads to greater ability to self-generate content for enjoyment. I don't need hand-tailored experiences (I like them, mind you) - I need more tools and opportunities to generate my own content and story. That's what keeps a game entertaining. At the end of the day, a video-game has one goal and only one goal: to entertain. That is the product, so build that product: a product of entertainment.

I have total faith in the design decisions of frontier developments when its comes to Elite Dangerous..and i for one.......

Nope.. i thought i could write this without laughing, but i failed.

Yeah, this right here. Well, for me anyway.

I didn't pick up Elite because Space Legs was on the way. I have zero interest in being able to get out of my seat and walk around looking at intricately designed and highly detailed station interiors. I got into this game because flight simulators are my thing.

Everything that @sandkid listed sounds great. Revamping and improving the functionality of existing systems would be sweet. The only thing I would add to that list would be atmospheric flight inside a wider variety of planets to go along with the proposed new "stellar phenomena".

Keep going! You can do this!

After all, you're putting your support behind absolutely zero information!
It's easy to throw your support behind nothing!
You can't be disappointed or worried until it's something!

And that probably won't happen until December, so you've got lots of time!

A new bubble with new engeneers with new effects and mods. New alien life and tech and ships. Perhaps a different economy and law system.

It could be a generation ship, that found alien life walst drifting thrugh interstellar space and made peace and shared technology and culture and over hundreds of years had made a new bubble of civilization with human and alien tech and culture. Perhaps new hyperspace tech alowed the generation ship to travel thousands of light years to this new bubble. And the people of the generation ship asumed humanity had failed and died out and so never came back. Or they were enslaved by the aliens and kept in a zoo and studied.

It can be gated with a permit. Would esily take 2 years and would be a new era i guess..

Did you fully read my comment?

Wait and see, then once you know more if you don't like the look of it don't bother. The whole worry and disappointment thing seems somewhat OTT.

If the "New Era" gave us nothing more than the removal of restricted module slots, I would be happy man.

The argument that it prevents a combat-focused ship from being used in different roles (and thus impinges on the intended function of multi-role ships) is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. The year is 3306. If a pilot wants to tweak a Vulture to make it a 64t capacity core miner, that's their business. Innovation and diversity should be turned loose, not contained by arbitrary role assignments.

Sure it has 2x restricted slots, but I'm squeezing 47ly out of a FAS anyway. Because screw you, that's why. So just make my life easier, ok? :sneaky:

NO interest in any MMO type enhancements. Or walking around like in X4 (total joke).

So restrain these updates to Solo or a single-player implementation:

I'd be interested in building my own station somewhere. Either in orbit or ground-based. I would like to be able to hop in my vette (or whatever) and land inside a capital ship, and take on various types of missions as we run around the bubble. Trade, wars, whatever.

NPC crewmates. On the bridge where applicable. Manning turrets (and get rid of the stupid 'jitter' ), doing ship repairs, and flying multiple SLFs from the larger ships.

How about some missions where I fly with a NPC faction? Or do important cargo carrying missions with a faction escort? Or shuttling around VIPs? Or maybe I could be a part of the escort for various faction missions? Basically go battle hostile factions or aliens as a fighter pilot, become a smuggler, or join a pirate group/faction.

Make high-security systems just that. Little to no risk. Then run down the scale to complete anarchy systems where anything goes (and does).

This might be a good start.

Oh all right...add PVE type play where teams can do missions in a co-op. :D

OK, enough rambling...where's my coffee? LOL...

1) More variety of missions - why arent escort missions available already?
2) Pirate bases to either attack or join their ranks.
3) More social aspects - space bars.
4) Guild bases
5) A 2nd alien race with more tech such as cloaking devices, different propulsion (different stars needing scoping/raw materials needed to fuel etc.) Make them fairly peaceful and more importantly playable. This would encourage long term players to start again with a new save (with an additional save included in New Era) so we can swap between saves as and when we feel like it. This race could exist in the seas of water worlds so to land on their bases you have to enter the planets oceans.
6) More variety of planet based vehicles - its shocking that the only SRV we have is a gloried moon buggy with just 2 tonne cargo space. Give us the option to buy a variety of vehicles each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

The options are endless.
