IF Space Legs, Atmospheric Planets and Base Building are not part of New Era...

I'd be interested in building my own station somewhere.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like fleet carriers address this. Sort of.

They're basically large, mobile, player-owned stations. After all, they have station facilities and landing pads, and apparently we're supposed to jump them somewhere and then live our lives out of them. I guess. I mean, I don't fully understand their function beyond that.

Here there is a big IF, because tbh all discussions about Legs and Base Building come from an unofficial leak and, even worse, atmospheric planets is purely players speculation.
So what IF the New Era of Elite Dangerous is about none of the three?

Let's prepare ourselves to a B-Plan: with such a "big" manpower of roughly 80 developers working at this project for more than 2 years, what would you expect or wish to see as an alternate content release?
Elite dangerous 2. A full rebuild of elite dangerous with a global server and no p2p network issues or instancing.

Most data ported over to the new server a framework built for future updates allowing space legs and atmospheric worlds

Lol, but to take it seriously for a second they'd probably have mentioned upcoming subs in the financials. Never mind eh.
True. More than likely that small 80 man team is in place to keep the ship skins and fixing patches rolling.

With games like Jurassic park evolution doing so well I'd expect the majority of funding and resources to go to new projects

Having said that. Latest quote from fdev shareholder meeting:

"Elite Dangerous, which launched in December 2014, continues to expand and develop. Frontier is developing a major new paid‐
for release for the iconic space simulation which will dramatically expand gameplay and mark the beginning of a new era for Elite
Dangerous. Targeted for launch at the end of 2020, this major new release on multiple platforms will fall into financial year 2021"
(the 12 months ending 31 May 2021).

If we aren't getting at least two of the three headline features players have been asking for for years, then we'll probably see a player exodus, the sort of scale eve the club's dynasty project in the Formadine Rift could only just about manage to cope with.

Player Headlines are not worth the pixels they’re made of. Elite is not now, nor has it ever been a “design by committee” game, regardless how much you pledged in the Kickstarter, or how many lifetime passes you’ve bought for all your extra accounts you bought, in an effort to have your opinion somehow matter. It doesn’t, not any more than mine or anyone else’s.

The only committee that matters is the one that meets in Braben’s office once a month. The rest of us here are along for the ride and free to hop off at any time. (None of this is to be taken personally, it is not personal).

The only time it is "Design by committee" is when SDC threaten to mass execute newbies over changes to the game they don't like...
Yes, I'm still sore over that one :)

And don't forget influenzas...

Frontier have 'promised' something game-changing, I'm hoping it is just that, not feet...

theyre in the dev videos on Frontier YT channel, if you haven't listened to the only authoritative source where the heck are you getting your info? From code dippers and leaks? Ill stick to the official source thanks.
Can you link to a source please, because there are many many dev videos and I'm also of the opinion that was never said. Specifically the bit about atmospheric landings.

I didn’t even know they still existed. I barely knew they existed two years ago. Their relevance is greatly over-exaggerated.

That's painfully obvious.

What worries me is the possibility that the design process involves a roulette wheel, a feature for every number and a few spins of the wheel. Must have kept hitting the '0' recently.

No matter what the next era is, you can count on one thing.... more bugs (Thargoid and other)
I guess if it wasn't any of those things an alternative might be that they 'simply' rebuild the entire engine to give us something pretty similar to what we have now but everything is shinier, works better and is in a better place for future expansion. That would presumably have to come with some gameplay changes, adjustments to balancing and various mechanics but nothing really very much beyond we have now but a better version of itself.

Players would perhaps mostly see this as a big QoL pass but it could conceivably include current suggested features like a universal limpet controller to streamline external interactions - or possibly the whole limpet thing replaced with something that does a similar job in a different way.
So kind of like all those "remastered" games to squeeze another $60 out of fans for a game they already own? I hope not.

If there are not planets with atmosphere, fauna and flora after 2 years of working with dozens of developers and considerable financial means, well I would be extremely disappointed and I would find that Frontier does not live up to its reputation.

But it will not be the case, no doubt.

Alternate content release ? Everything looks lifeless without the flora, fauna and planets with atmosphere.

:)
