I'm Back!!!

This thread really isn't about me, but rather the power of narrative and community events. The return of Galnet and community goals tied into that narrative have brought me back into the game like I was in the early days, where I'm actually excited to play the game despite the fact that it's the same "mechanics" it has been all along (with a few new surprises, like megaships in a combat zone). This is even more impressive considering the timing, because I was fully invested in the new Microsoft Flight Simulator, hook line and sinker. Heck, I was almost begrudged when Galnet returned, as it was "distracting" me from my flight sim adventures, but the more I got involved in the CGs, the more I was sucked back into the ED world.

So the point of this thread is just to let Frontier know, "It worked!" Bringing back Galnet and CGs brought me back, and hopefully it brought other players back as well. I even bought some new paint that I would have otherwise not spent my Arx on, with more paint purchases on the way (Midnight Black, I'm looking at you). I also wanted a positive thread about CGs and Galnet, seeing so many people are complaining about piddly little things regarding the specific minutia of the last two CGs. I thoroughly enjoyed the rebooted CGs, warts and all, and I hope Frontier keeps them coming. Good job!

I've not been involved at all but it has been great just being able to listen to the news about it and seeing how things turn out. Helps keep the galaxy alive.
Also nice to have something different to listen to on long supercruise trips..

even though i only participate in CGs rarely, the option of doing so is nice, hopefully they're here to stay even if they are generic and the mechanics are the same its all fine!

dont change it!

Agree with the OP... although I've never been gone, but the return of CGs and even Galnet (which I never rated but some things you only start missing when they're gone) has made me feel more enthusiastic about the game again, rather than feeling like treading water.

And my Arx wallet is getting looser again also - even did the unthinkable and splurged on a shipkit, and a couple of FC PJ's! Things are looking up and I'm now pretty excited about the next 12 months.

See, I gotta say that I feel exactly the opposite.

I'm kind of "back" cos I finally got around to moving my ships to Colonia, and then I decided I liked monkeying around with FCs so I bought another one, and then I got some new PP toys and built a couple of ships specifically for them (I've now got an iCourier that's going to be hysterical to fly at CGs ;)) but I'm afraid I still can't find any compelling reason to play ED.

Right now, I'm just logging in for a "quick blat" in the same way I might have an hour massacring zombies in L4D.

It's been a while since I'd religiously watch Obsidian Ant's video's to find out what was new in the ED universe and then log in, hook up with some mates and go and investigate all the new stuff.
I think the last time I was genuinely interested in what was happening in the game was back when INRA was breaking news.

Perhaps the difference between you and OP is that you continued playing, whereas OP took a break.

If you took a real break, for say a month, you might feel curiosity pangs again :)

Apparently, I "took a break" for 21 weeks, while waiting to buy my most recent PP modules. ;)

Another thing that has helped me personally is that I've radically changed my approach to combat, and it feels like a new game to me because of this. It started with my stealth pirate Dolphin, and now I'm flying a stealth combat Cobra, and I'm having way more fun with this cheap little ship than I was with my "meta Mamba" in the same CZ. I'm having a blast, and I'm actually getting more kills using my new Cobra than I was in that expensive "boring" Mamba! Combat actually requires some tactics rather than the old "spin in circles and shoot at each other all day" gameplay that I grew bored with long ago.

That said, I hope everyone sticks to their metas, because half the fun is being radically different from the average player. This is why I won't be doing any howto videos or posting any Coriolis builds. The CGs allow me to fly my unique builds in a shared environment with other players, which adds to the fun factor as well.

Who'd have thought story, events and lore being important? Its like Sunday roast without gravy...i.e. unthinkable.
Frontier did not for almost a year, but thankfully somebody over there got a clue and brought it all back. To whoever that clue person is, thank you! Not only is Galnet back, but it's more interesting than it was before*, giving a sense of "something big is going on behind the scenes" which has piqued my interest.

* I wasn't here for the early days of Galnet, which I'm told was really something. I joined during the "So and so is having a party in such and such a system, haul beer" days.

The question now is can FD keep it up, pace it out to avoid CG exhaustion and keep it interesting? They are off to a great start, but I remember how CGs went sour too from over-use.

Plus, depending on who you talk to, early Galnet was either a right laugh or was horrific :D
