You're gonna get a nice bowl of Vanilla icecream with Strawberries and Cream, on the house.

Sorry you're not gonna get the Strawberries and Cream.

But sometime in the future you're gonna get something realy good, don't ask me what or when though.

How do you think people are going to react?

Hang on, you're telling me I am going to get free vanilla icecream? Fantastic, I love Icecream......but icecream with actual cream? Yech, that is just too much.

I'm cool with the announcement overall, since it effectively confirms that there will be a Next Big Thing and that it's currently in development. It's a shame some things were pushed back, but I suspect the ice textures needed to be in order to work better with the Next Big Thing's other planetary improvements (atmos?) while Fleet Carriers? Well, I can't imagine why other than time issues.

However, that said, I hope that means they can focus to make the Mining and Exploration improvements even more robust than initially planned. Honestly if they do then Beyond has achieved its initial goal - to flesh out gameplay in all key areas - Combat, Trade, Exploration, Mining and Multiplayer (with Squadrons being added, even without the carriers).

Hopefully it will make Horizons a nice complete package on its own, since the Next Big Thing will be a paid expansion along the same lines or Horizon's original release--that is, adding huge gameplay additions (like planet landing and SRV).

In fact, part of me hopes that what they'll do is take away the original Elite and provide free upgrades to Horizons. Basically, Horizons ends up as the new Base Game. My concern would be that having more and more variants of the game all interacting (Base Game, Horizons, Next Big Thing, Future Big Thing) might only complicate matters for future development. My lay opinion would be that the Base Game should only be one step behind the Next Best Thing at any given time. But that's just an opinion from a casual non-developer point of view.

The abandonment of the support for the Mac version of the game, I think, gives them the chance to finally switch to Horizon as the Baze Game next year. Here's hoping.

Not quite. You might recall back during Q1 they mentioned that other improvements to planetary colouring were still coming down the line. In particular making the colours better match up with the presence of materials & geological formations. Hopefully that is still coming, especially as it dovetails so nicely with the Exploration changes.

Oh, yes, I had forgotten about that ! Let's hope that is coming, to make more sense of what we discover down on the planet.

By the way, is Marsha Hicks, the new Engineer at Colonia, a relation ? :p

I'd be delighted if you could tell me how to get the 'free updates' without paying for Elite:Dangerous and Horizons in some manner.

You paid for two products that were delivered. You paid nothing for Beyond.

Simple.

I know it's a modern thing that we expect continued development for free, because I guess people think companies don't deserve to be paid for their work, but c'mon.

Indeed. I'm a little surprised to see the number of people saying Beyond is Free.

Beyond is an update to Horizons for no charge, because the Horizons Updates within the first two years were so bad. By FD's own admission.

I'd be interested to learn how many of those who have claimed Beyond was "free", send money to Nigerian Royalty on a regular basis.

Quality has nothing to do with it. Work was performed by Frontier and they distributed the results of that work for free.

I generally respect your posts, but I disagree with you here.

Then I'm happy to agree to disagree. ;)

Bedtime for me. Looking forward to seeing the responses from the team through tomorrow!

Indeed and yet ironically they were the two features that Frontier seemed most pleased about at FX17.

I call loot boxes ;)

Which is why I suspect they were not pushed back due to technical issues, but due to them most likely fitting in better with next year's direction change.

Start your own game development company and do it your way then.
I hope you never receive a disappointing meal in a restaurant. Unless you're a chef, of course, in which case you can prepare your own.

I suspect you haven’t clue one of what it takes to run a developer business.
Correct. But you don't get any points for that because I said as much in the post you quoted. So more of a fact than a suspicion, really.

Still, thanks for the feedback.

Of course, if they hadnt delayed/cut the carriers and ice planets but the explo/mining overhaul, you would have called that the 'critical stuff' just as easily. I dont know what is more annoying, you being so disingenuous or you being so transparently disingenuous.

I think if anyone is being disingenuous here it's Frontier Developments.
We were told 2 months ago, everything was as it should be, and we're being told it's not. And not only is it not, bu there is no clear roadmap for what is next.

Fleets were probably the most anticipated part of Q4!

Additionally, we were told that Beyond would contain some premium content. Everyone was waiting to see what that paid content would be. LEP owners were looking forward to getting premium content for their donations which started this Game. And what to they get? A big kick in the nether regions.

Telling your playerbase that everything is fine and then cancelling all premium content plus one of the most eagerly awaited updates, is just bizarre and to use your own terminology; Disingenuous. They are facts; You cannot dispute them.

Believe me, I asked myself that very same question......sadly both Carina & Midnight refuse to answer that question for me ;).

Well, personally I am glad that development is going on strong. I bought the LEP back in premium beta days and personally, I wasn't totting up in my head how many updates I was going to get for that. My financial planning isn't that good... probably why I am not elite in trade yet. I bought the LEP because I wanted to be able to play the game in full for the lifetime of its development. To be honest, i had forgotten about the 'premium content' bit of the Beyond series. Keep on keeping on Fdev. o7

FDev announce Beyond will be free
FDev Buy new offices
Chinese company buy in to FDev
FDev Directors sell shares
FDev announce the critical stuff will not be in Beyond but in paid content a year later

Hmm.....
https://www.youinvest.co.uk/market-research/LSE:FDEV?tab=6

Tencent holdings account for 9% of the total Fdev shares.

Hardly a controlling interest that can sway the development of one game and besides why the hell would they.

So, if I understand this correctly:

- Base game owners: unaffected.
- Horizon owners: getting less* than they were promised at the start of the Beyond season, but considerably more than was originally part of the Horizons purchase.
- Lifetime pass owners: get exactly what they were going to get before, but some features are delayed.

Disappointing, but not the end of the world. As a LEP owner, I'm loving my 7(ish) years of 'lucky bag' updates.

(* This bit is a bit vague. Carriers and the Ice-world changes aren't included in Horizons or Beyond, but Zac seemed to state they won't be paid content. So perhaps they will be included in a free post-Beyond update? Just like the base game has had many updates even for players who never bought Horizons).

The thing that concerned me was that the Carriers just felt like more "pew pew" content to me....so it is nice to see them drop it in favour of more exploration & mining content.

Nah, actually Carriers could have provided a lot of real nice emergent gameplay opportunities for miners and explorers too. Maybe even more so than the combat crowd. Carriers were one of the few multiplayer features which could have been very useful to a wide variety of player styles.

Of course, these days- you have people who sue and start a social justice movement if one stubs their toe because they tripped walking into a grocery store. Or spills hot coffee on themselves. If it weren't so amusing, it would be sad.

No, I think most of it's due to the "stick it to the man" mentality, rather than seeing things a bit more realistically. Frontier has robbed no one of their life's savings.

You're not considering the emotional distress and psychological damage being caused to some CMDRs by FDev with this news. Exhibit #1:
Beyond was FD's chance to show they could deliver after the 2 year mess they created with Horizons. They have not only failed to improve the core gameplay during Beyond over the past 8 months we just learned that they won't even deliver the planned features they told us they've been working on all year for a planned Q4 released. Waiting another undetermined amount of time for unannounced features in an undetermined paid DLC expansion when they can't deliver on promises made for this year makes no sense. Sorry but after 4 years of repeated delays, bugs, minimum viable product features and broken promises FD is out of chances here. Anyone who is still trying to defend FD at this point isn't being remotely reasonable, they are simply unwilling to criticize FD even when they fail to deliver what they promised we were getting with Q4.

And yet curiously... In the time I've been playing this game since I purchased it- I've experienced no "emotional stress or psychological damage" on the part of Frontier.

Have they changed priorities numerous times? Sure. Have they delayed features? Sure. Have they changed their minds about a few things? Sure.

Has it emotionally scarred me for life because they did these things? Absolutely not.
