When I'm in the bubble I sometimes fly aimlessly around Shinrarta waiting to be ganked, generally doesn't take long. I quite like the impromptu combat, it's fun. The statistics will show a win:loss ratio of about 1:40. Oh, the shame for those gankers who get beat by me!

It's not besides the point. Sometimes the thing is the point.
Simply using PG/Solo because it's easier/more efficient/less hassle doesn't appeal to everyone.
It's almost like... some players would rather have adventures and not just increase a number. Weird, I know.
I don't doubt that it is the point for you, but probably entirely beside the point for the explorer returning with gazillions in cartography data.

Yep. My Courier boosts to 850-880m/s (depending on outfit and cargo onboard) - flies about 650m/s backwards. I got pulled in New Borann by a wing previously - twice in my Viper 4 (shieldless...), they managed to get that down to 80% (it has about 3000 hull and module reinforcements before you ask, with external modules engineered for sturdiness) before I high waked and RTB'd to my carrier to repair - not wanting to do that a 3rd time (I had plans and they didn't involve those gankers) I switched to my Courier which I know is pretty much untouchable. I was actually surprised they pulled me over because experienced pilots don't bother normally.

From you point of view I can see that is what you may think but since credits in the game are entirely theoretical, I'd say that it is just a way of keeping score.
