In game tools to find sell location

If I can do the exact same thing two different ways, and one of those ways is less time-consuming, more accurate, more profitable, and allows me to spend more time actually playing the game instead of clicking around on a map it took me ages to populate with unreliable data... I'm going to do things the quick, profitable, reliable way, because it is 100% better. Others may say that this is lazy or downright cheating, but I just don't care.

A resource is a resource. Use them all.
It really depends upon what you value. I, personally, don’t value profits anymore. I used to, but that it was less about the profit, and more about what those profits could bring to the table when I was manipulating the BGS. What does it matter if something makes a profit of 50,000, or a profit of 50 million, when there’s nothing worthwhile to spend those profits on?

Far more interesting for me are the experiences the game brings, and what I experience when using sites like inara is a sterile one, especially when compared to relying on my own knowledge of the game and the in-game tools. Trying to figure out where I went wrong, when flying to an unfamiliar station, is much more interesting than guaranteed results. At least in my book.

(y) . You know you can add those as timestamps to YT as well, right?

Yes dont know how thow… 😂

It’s actually quite simple:

In the video’s description, simply write something like this:

Code:
00:00 intro
03:00 part A
06:00 part B
10:00 conclusion

I’ll write a formal review of your video later, once I actually have time to watch it in full. To be honest, between the video being forty minutes long, and you starting out talking about Fleet Carriers, I stopped watching in favor of doing other things. I figured your “secret” was Fleet Carrier based, and thus couldn’t be used by the 99.9% of the player-base who don’t own one of those annoying monuments to Ozymandias.

Based on the “TLDW” replies, at least three people guessed your secret was the commodity filter tab on the galaxy map, which probably explains the dearth of “This One Weird Trick” videos about it. Most people prefer the utility of sites like Inara (which is available while away from the game), and with people like me who prefer to rely on our own skills, it’s just shy of being our tool of last resort.

If you are having fun, you are playing the right way, take no notice of anyone telling you otherwise.
To be fair Catcher, I don't think anyone is saying he's wrong for doing it this way. Some of us just prefer third party tools for their ease of use, and others have criticized the OP's approach as being perhaps too promotional of his YouTube channel.

But you're 100% right. Nobody should be telling anyone else that using Elite's native resources is a bad thing. If anything, all this has made me want better in-game tools for getting things done. Sadly, what we have to work with is time-consuming, clunky, and painfully inefficient.

To be fair back - there are members here who will suggest that a player is "doing it wrong" - even I get it thrown at me occasionally, as I play for entertainment, not 'seriously'!

Anyone who is keen on sharing knowledge, particularly not in English, and obviously having fun doing so, deserves a little encouragement - even if their 'way' is not entirely unique.

I spent around a year playing before even coming here, no youtube vids, didn't even know about Inara... It was fine until I had to find something I hadn't even heard of, yet alone saw in a market. I came here and asked, got a great response almost straight away, and have lurked here since, much to the distaste of some ;)

In general the forum is a great mob to hang with, but there are some who are less than convivial.

Well… good job I found this becouse inara for us in the “hold” version of the game is not relayable any more..
from 290k with 126k demand I found 60k with 80k demand… rip inara for us…

whent to my location 280k showed in the in game tool, result 280k with 6k demand ;)

Okay...

1) Know your audience. You're competing with "This One Weird Trick" videos, and that audience isn't known for their patience. You took nearly nine minutes to even start talking about your own "one weird trick." The stuff about fleet carriers at the beginning in particular was what lead me to conclude that it had something to do with fleet carriers in particular, which is why I had stopped watching it in the first place. It had no relevance to my game in particular.

2) The commodity filter on the galactic map is based on the lore of the game, where in-universe Commanders don't cooperate with others, in order to protect their own profits. Which is why its necessary for you to dock in a system first, before that data becomes visible on the galactic map. In addition, IIRC, the galaxy map only shows information within 40 light years of your current location, regardless of having visited a system before.

3) You end with the obvious conclusion about why there is a dearth of "How to use the Commodity Tab filter on the Galactic Map" videos: it takes a lot of work to map out a trade network using the in-game tools, and the type of player who's looking for trade advice is the one who wants to put in the least effort, physical and mental, into getting good results. The Commodity Tab filter is great about showing you where you've been, but you still need to develop the skills necessary to figure out where you need to go when you're in unfamiliar space.

Still, I personally prefer not to rely on sites like I myself. It's more of an adventure to explore the galaxy and figure things out for yourself. And you don't worry about having the site go down, of for the operator to pull silly stunts like going "on strike" over some imagined slight. "How to" videos are always nice to have, especially for those less well known features of the game.

Good Luck!

Ok so let me say this.

Im sorry that I made a 42 min video, I should of made one more direct and precise.. infact I will do another one that gets straight to the point.

the day of creating this video I had a doctor apointment at 7.45am (and I usualy wake up at 11) I slept less than 5 hours but I was so exited and having finaly a full day to myself I realy whanted to get out this information and to do the video.

I made a 2 hours recording and started editing (and belive me there was a lot to edit since its not my primary language) but at one point I was so tired that my brain stoped working and just whanted to get it done with.. my wife and kids got home just when I was finishin (6.30pm) so I posted the video withot thinkig to much over it..

Another thing… I like to let people know who they are watching.. it was my first video in english that wolud probably get out to a bigger audience.. so I’ve made it more of a chat than a “information” video.

Im absolutly sure I found somthing of value becouse I just realise that inara for Legacy players is not viable any more.. tonight with my friend I was using my 3rd account so I whent to inara to find the platinum selling point and what I found was a 126k demand with 290k price but when we got there the price was 60k with 80k demand… swapped account to my 2nd one, found a 280k price on platinum and we manage to sell for the ful price!

My recommendation: since the target audience will likely be for the legacy version of the game, make a video focused on that. Have more than one point. Have 5 to 10 interesting helpful items for cmdrs playing ED Legacy. Or if your theme is playing without 3rd party tools... fine, run with that.

Upfront explain what the video is for, who the target audence is, and why your points are useful vs other more common methods.

You do have a great voice. Best of luck with your videos. (y)

This one was much better than the last the last one. Some observations:

1) You should mention at the beginning of the video that this is especially useful for players of the legacy version, due to Inara and other 3rd party sites not supporting that mode. This is probably the most important pieces of information in the video, and you don't mention it until the last minute of your video.

2) I was tempted to quit watching at 9:30, because you didn't inform your viewers what you were doing. The only reason why I didn't was because I was reviewing this video, so I stuck around incase there was something relevant towards the end.

3) 13:00-15:00 Personally, I would've preferred to see this information on a table. Tables can convey a lot of information in a short period of time, especially compared to verbal communication. This was another potential quit watching point for me.

Thank you
unfortunatly im not a pro at this.. I realize that some information would being better in a different way but I think that who realy whants and need the information can do some work to.
I said it clearly at the bigining of the video that FOR ME its better than 3rd party tools so if you whant and are interested you watch the hole thing and right down for yourself the table.
I know.. not profesional.. but for now as a “casual” youtuber this is what I can do.

thank you for the tips!
You are completly right.

I whanted to share a photo but it wont let me….

For those who think that 3rd party tools are better… you are wrong!

I found a station 2 days ago:
Low Tem Diamond 540k cr with 2.200 demand
Painite 450k cr with 4.800 demand

Inara cant beat this… and its my “private“ selling location.. no one knows about it and I can sell there for days!!

I dont understand why you cant do this on Live as well… you better check..

I think the general consensus is that third party tools are often more convenient to use, but have the obvious drawback that they are updated by the players themselves on a voluntary basis so may not be precise.

Is it a large pad station? If so TELL ME NOW :)

Upload your pic to imgur (or similar) and link to it. I think there is a size limit for files uploaded to the forum directly, there's a thread in the Forum feedback section that discusses it IIRC.
