Inner Moons List

To my great shame I haven't yet mentioned Ocularis Coelum (aka Mylaifa AA-A h786) in this thread, despite I've been in that system a couple of times.

Time to correct this injustice :)

And one more system: Hegeia WZ-R b32-0 reported by cmdr. LordFerret.

I just came back from an exploration jaunt out through the Elysian Shore, where I discovered HEGEIA WZ-R B32-0. The second planet in this system is a Class 1 Gas Giant with a huge ring system. The A-ring I was able to map, but the B-ring was so far out from the planet that it was unreachable by map probes. This B-ring begins around 2.5ls out, beyond this planet's moon 'C', and extends out close to 5.0ls in total.

Wait a minute that's not a shepherd moon
Well, that would be rather unfortunate. Can you check orrery, please?

According to EDSM data it looks very-very-very much like that at least moon #1a should within the gap in GG's rings.

UPD. I've also checked it on the shepherd moons list and the first three moons (from #1a to #1c) appear to be in there.

And while I'm slowly making my way to Col 107 Sector UY-Q b34-4, we have one more system reported by cmdr. Starsong: Eoch Blao AA-A h65 body #1 -- class K star with 28,6 million km. metal rich ring.
Found this, a K-class ringed star with a gas giant on an eccentric orbit and a landable planet inside the ring, all orbiting a black hole. System is Eoch Blao AA-A H65.

Well, I'm here and I'm afraid, I have bad news: Col 107 Sector UY-Q b34-4 body #AB 3, despite being a planet with the largest currently known ring, is visually completely unremarkable. It's outer ring is not only invisible, but also even too sparse to be obstacle for a ship in supercruise mode, so it renders on the map, but is actually not there physically. Moreover, it is so dark in the system, that I had to "lit" the inner ring with dss probes to see it.

The next ring with radius of around 40 million km. is not very far, maybe I'll be more lucky this time ;)

There is a study on the question of rings visibility, made by cmdr. Gromsch. It shows, that there definitely is a connection between ring's density and visibility: the higher the density is, the more is the probability that the ring would be visible.

I've made a table of the confirmed planets with shepherd moons and sorted them by the density of the rings. And we can see, that invisible rings all have density of less than 46 tons* of material per km3, while the visible ones tend to have density of more than 46.

* Unless I lost a few zeros in the calculations :)

However, we can't just say, that all sparse rings are invisible, for we have a few examples of the contrary (I've marked them in the table by red font).

For instance, the overall density of the outer ring of Cúpla Iontach is very low, but the material is condensed in a collection of several thin dense and visible separate rings.
YKhHJOc.jpg

The same is true for one of the most beautiful rings I've seen -- the outer ring of the Poseidon's Fury
yah9EFr.jpg

And for The Rejected Child
TKjIClX.png

And, to be completely honest, for all known visible large and sparse rings of planets with shepherd moons:

On the other hand dense rings seem to be more often rendered as one piece. Here are some examples from the end of the table:

What do we have in the end.
1) We can calculate the ring's density from the EDSM data and if that density is above some margin, it is very highly likely that the system would provide us with some nice views :)

2) If you see a large ring made of several thin concentric rings -- it's overall density would probably be low, and if the ring is rendered in one piece, it is probably dense (have no idea how can that be of any practical use :) )

3) If the density of the ring is below the margin, there still actually is a chance that the ring is visible, however I don't know how we can guesstimate it from the list without flying and checking :)

I've checked two more systems with large rings with the same result: they are too sparse to be visible.

Col 89 Sector NZ-L b10-1 body #ABC 5 is so dark, that even the inner ring is barely visible and 35,6MKm outer ring is seen only on the map.
ERIL9jK.jpg

Synuefuae RY-S d3-0 body #AB 1 is on the contrary rather bright, however that didn't help much: I still didn't manage to find any trace of it's 36,5 MKm outer ring.

Have no idea how I came across the address of that system, for it is definitely not in the list of shepherd moons. But still here it is -- a nice-looking "false positive" in Swoilz IT-O d7-77. It has three rings with a gap among them and a relatively close moon.

By the looks of it (and in my experience), another buggy feature, the three rings.
In game graphics & system map show 3 rings, the system map even lists A, B & C, but for the orrery & DSS the C ring doesn't exist as a separate entity.
