Insta-billionaires DID exploit (a theory)

Some players "got lucky". I wonder how many are going to whinge when someone takes the elite cash prize and claim they 'sploited to victory. Even though Frontier know exactly who got the cash and have kept it thereby forfeiting their competition place.

No, let's be clear. Exploits were used, Frontier mucked up after the fact and accidentally rewarded them for it, then Frontier decided in their wisdom not to take back the credits.

It's not quite "Got Lucky".

If I can create some fun for myself and others, while also rewarding others with a large lump of credits they wouldn't otherwise be able to earn so quickly, or while having as much fun, then I don't think anyone has any room to say that what I'm doing is wrong or exploiting.

It's obviously, factually, and confirmed to be, a bug which you have exploited.

The amount of fun created for you or others does not change this. I suppose it's better than removing fun, but it really has zero bearing on what a bug exploit is, or the fact that it should not have been able to happen.

I am sorry but the lack of a normal game developers response to clear cut statements from players that they have benefited from an game issue is really suspicious and suggests there is something else going on here that we are not privy too. I don't know of any game developer that would allow this to just stand. I suspect we'll hear more from Frontier in the coming days, but I hope they do it sooner rather than later and don't repeat the same mistake they made with the server issue, which is to not fully communicate on it.

They already have responded, your just late to the drama. They asked the people affected which of 3 choices they wanted to happen. Those affected apparently had a majority chose to keep it, which was one of the options. But to do so means they forfeit entry in the elite competition.

All I see are a bunch of kids calling other players kids because they are trying to create some in-game, player-driven content with the lucky break they were given. Your idea of fun isn't the only idea of fun there is. If I can create some fun for myself and others, while also rewarding others with a large lump of credits they wouldn't otherwise be able to earn so quickly, or while having as much fun, then I don't think anyone has any room to say that what I'm doing is wrong or exploiting.

If you're idea of fun is earning ships rather than using them, then this game will be a relatively short game for you. I'm just fortunate enough that I don't have to grind for the ships, and it's possible for me to help others along with their grind significantly.

Hope to see you in game, kid.

You mean they want to share their free credits with some others that are still in the 'race to elite' competition. Which invalidates the competition, no?

Straw man. Has a single one of these 50 players actually done that? Any one actually had this happen yet?

And that's not the economy anyhoo. As I said in another post, its no different from a person who acquires a billion creds under normal conditions from doing the same thing. The real issue here is jealousy and pettiness. Some players "got lucky". I wonder how many are going to whinge when someone takes the elite cash prize and claim they 'sploited to victory. Even though Frontier know exactly who got the cash and have kept it thereby forfeiting their competition place.

The economy is the entire game, not just the commodities and market and if someone has millions/billions through normal means good luck to them - influence away!

Also, there is no jealousy on my part, I just care that the game is in good hands and will still be here for many years to come.

But he is right. Showing everyone how "generous" and "great" you are with your unfair advantage is just destroying the fun for everyone who wants to have a fair online game where only legit ingame actions determine player progression.

Earning ships BY using them. This is elite. Not cheating to get infinite money.

You are so important...

Haha! This! :)

My "unfair advantage" only affects those that want to be affected by it. I don't interact with anyone unless they choose to interact with me. I don't attack players. Players attack me. If they want to risk killing me to get a large bounty then that's their prerogative. In no way am I affecting anyone who doesn't want to be affected.

Do you have the link as I can't find it?

You can only enlighten yourself by reading what already has been written a billion times.

Actually, what I want is for you to show me that you actually have a valid reason to think I'm having a negative impact on anyone else. The fact that you keep dodging the question implies to me that you are just spewing nonsense and have no real reason, other than you are just upset that I got a lucky break and you didn't.

One of my friends ran into the 4 billion credit sell price bug while we were playing together that fateful evening. He had lost all his cargo at that point, and tried to make the transaction out of morbid curiosity.

He was not awarded 4 or 5 billion credits.

Sorry OP, your theory is a little too simple compared to the reality of the situation. Might I also suggest choosing a less sensationalist thread title?

See my above post.

Intent. Your conviently overlooked that point. Players affected were unaware they were getting excess credit. It was point out that many did not even know it was a potential issue. THe server taking a dump on itself and removing and replacing cargo/gear is not the fault of the player involved. They did not intend to cause the server to wig out, it just happened that way. I myself lost cargo from my hold several times during this issue, but it was so low grade that any potential loss or increase was minor. I tried several times to get rid of stuff and couldnt and then could and then couldnt again that I logged off and waited for an hour and logged in again.

If someone else did the same thing with more expensive gear and cargo and inexplicably gets several billions credits, there is no intent. And it is not deliberate.

has any billionaire took his mega hauler and started dropping paladium in beginner worlds?
I can see this in my mind. Beginners scoop up "stolen" palladium, get shot by stations and come to the forums whining about "exploiters" ruining their game.

They asked the people affected which of 3 choices they wanted to happen.

Offering choices that allows mistakes or exploits to stand is a terrible precedent.

Intent. Your conviently overlooked that point.

No, I'm not.

Once you notice you have a significant quantity of credits you should not have, you become a willful exploiter the moment you neglect to report the issue, or decide to keep them.

So this is how it goes...

Brains: "Hey guys, there's a competition to win 10k on that new Elite Dangerous game. Shall we try and win it?"
Roger: "Yeah ok, let's give it a shot"
Doofus: "Hey guys, I just got 5 billion squid from using that exploit/from a bug*. FD said I can keep it but I'm disqualified from the race to elite competition, I'm sad."
Brains: "No problemo, Doofus. Get a Type 9 fill it with paladium and drop some for us to pick up, rinse and repeat until we all have Anacondas, then we'll have a much better chance at winning the race to elite competition"
Roger: "What a brainy idea brains. We'll give you a share of the winnings doofus, don't worry."
Doofus: "how do I eject cargo?"
