Newcomer / Intro Intermediate/Advanced Exploration Ship Build

Hi all,

I am looking to build an intermediate to advanced dedicated exploration ship. Will likely go with the AspX for my choice of ship. I am looking to hit around >65 LYs - 70 LYs range.

So far this is what I have come out with:

Appreciate any comments or feedback on the build :)

Planning to do a lot of docking out there in the black I see? Honestly, ditch the two computers, fit a repair limpet controller and a small cargo rack and that's as good as you can make it. The only additional things to add would be maybe a mining laser (in the extreme rare case you need to acquire jumponium) and a small railgun with plasma slug (for dumping excess fuel, rarely used). Oh and engine enhanced PD and heavy duty that lightwieght hull. More hp, no extra mass.

EDIT; Oh, actually, you can even downsize the powerplant to a 3A and make it low powered thermal spread, for even better heat and less mass too. Basically this is what I'd do.

A 4a Power Plant instead of that 5d is probably the only real error.
Just be aware of your limited landing ability. Only 1 srv and those weak thrusters mean you will have to be rather careful around planets. Where's the fun in careful?

Imho the good Asp isn't up to the job any more. Phantom is the standard explorer.

Of the 3 long range explorer ships I have, I keep returning to my ASPX.
The Fonda has a slightly better jump range and has autorepair modules so it's good for long journeys but it doesn't handle that well.
The phantom is better, but I think it handles more like a big ship, and I prefer the ASP's view...
Don't overlook the use of guardian power units!

This build gives you everything you have except the SA and an extra LY jump. I thought SA as for beginners!

Put 2 pips to engines and 4 to shields, then switch off the PD as soon as you leave the station. If at any time you need more speed or boosts in normal space, you can switch it back on. There are other ways to set priorities if that doesn't float your boat:

Oh forgot a planetary landing thingy hehe..just remove the shield boosters

That repair limpet controller is going to do sweet sod all without a cargo rack my dude. EDIT; In fact, the more I look at this, the more I'm confused. High charge PD? The boost is a 26 seconds wait. That's an age! And really, those shield boosters are kinda pointless too. Might as well just stick with an enhanced 3d. Lower draw, lighter, faster recharge and you only lose like 11hp. And why not use a 3A AFMU. You can still run it all even on that PP if you turn off the PD.

Good point. Controllers need limpets which are stored in cargo racks.

You could fit racks in all your empty optionals and fill them with limpets but limpets have a mass.

I'd put a larger AFMU in just in case.

I'll try and link my AspX shortly. It's not perfect but it does OK.

If you have a 4 tonne capacity cargo rack you can synthesise limpets into it as needed as long as you had the necessary materials.

This. I can’t stand the phantom. It’s sits gathering dust while I fly my AspX. If you like a ship that handles and you actually want to see what you’re exploring, AspX is the move.

Ships are a very personal thing.
The AspX is a fine ship that I haven’t touched in ages as I find its engine noise annoying far too soon for an explorer, the Krait Phantom is more than manoeuvrable enough for exploration and the view is almost as good as the T9 which doesn’t have the AspX‘s annoying lights.

Hi all many thanks for your replies. I found them extremely insightful. After giving some thought on the phantom I decided I am still gonna stick with the aspx as it still gives me better range.

You might consider ditching the heat sink. I, personally, have never needed one.

Also, if you can, strip the power plant down.

Looking good though! (y)
