Introducing the Cockpit Paint Mod (CPM)

Current status: v2.0 Public Release. Available on the EDHM GitHub or the EDHM Discord

Hi CMDRs,

Those on PC might be familiar with the Elite Dangerous HUD Mod (EDHM), which enables CMDRs to apply custom RGB colours to each HUD element. EDHM was built using the wonderful shader modding software, 3Dmigoto, which was created by our very own CMDR DarkStarSword. 3Dmigoto was also used in Old Duck's Amazingly Realistic Immersion Mod, AD's Graphics Mod and the original Dustbuster mod.

Prior to releasing EDHM I was given the go-ahead by FDev with the following rules:
i. The mod shouldn't provide a competitive advantage
ii. The mod shouldn't alter any ARX-related assets

I've also added my own guideline:
iii. The mod should only include colour customisation of elements that could theoretically be under the pilot's control. So there aren't any mods of stars, planets, stations, etc. The only environmental mod included in EDHM is the ability to turn off 'space dust', which is common to all previous ED mods.

Recently I've been working on a new project called the Cockpit Paint Mod (CPM). The CPM enables CMDRs to paint their cockpits with any combination of colours. You can leave most of the cockpit as default and add a little custom colour, or you can spend a few hours and re-colour every surface. You can even match your cockpit colour scheme with your external paintjob.

If you're familiar with EDHM, then you probably already use EDHM UI, which is developed by my colleague Blue Mystic. The UI makes it easy to choose and apply colours to the HUD, but with the CPM the UI will automatically detect when you change ships and load the particular cockpit colour theme you've chosen for that ship.

Some important notes about the CPM:
  • it does not affect the external paintjob or anything ARX-related
  • it's client-side only, meaning other players in multi-crew won't see your custom cockpit
  • it's purely cosmetic and does not offer any competitive advantage (you can't make panels transparent)
  • it doesn't alter any game files (3Dmigoto sits between the game and the GPU)
  • Odyssey only

The CPM hasn't been released yet, is now released and I'm making this post for the sake of transparency. Several weeks ago I sent details of the new mod to FDev via the CMs, and if they prefer I don't release the mod (scheduled for Update 13) then I won't. But I think it ticks all their modding boxes and hopefully they will regard it as a nice enhancement.

Please let me know if you have any questions or feedback, and I'll attach some example images so you can see how it looks

Incredible. I can't wait!!

Ships look really good... since it changes with every ship, it this to be running along side ED or is it like EDHM Ui where it just writes colors to a file then can be closed and does not affect game performance at all?

If you change ships then you'll need the UI running to detect the shipyard change (the UI reads the player journal file). Each ship has a different number of 'paintable' sections (between 6 to 8, plus the floor, pilot's chair, and signage) and different layout, so we can't apply one colour theme to all ships - each ship needs its own design

But if you're just flying around in one ship you won't need the UI running

It's very early days of development so there may be better ways to optimise the cockpit themes in the future
