"IP changed mid session"?

Yes, I've had that occasionally. When I look in the router statistics it's always the WAN uptime which has reset to zero, leaving the LAN uptime still looking good. It's therefore the ISP doing it. If it happens very often you have grounds for complaint. With mine it tends to be about every couple of days so I haven't raised it; they'd probably say I just have to put up with it.

Try keeping an eye on your WAN uptime regularly if you can find it in your router information page.

This is a service from many hosts. They change your IP in order to make it harder to track you down, increasing security. To modify or disable that you gonna access your router settings and apply the appropiate settings (change every log-on/-off or every 10 hours or not at all).
Alternatively you can force a certain IP through free internet services that are customizeable.

Changing the IP mid session in any connection that is permanent will cause a DC as you are virtually now another user with another ID (IP) and another virtual location. The data you are requesting will no longer reach you as it is sent to the old IP. It is possible for programms and games and the like to request a new IP wothin every like 2 seconds but since that increases the workload and slows down the connection not many do that.

I get this error too when using my VPN

Ever since I started playing E.D. using my VPN, I started getting this error after several hours of play.

Nothing I can do except completely restart the game client.

Hopefully, the game devs will patch this in the future.

Where is your VPN connecting to, is it in your control?
I suspect the owner of the other end of the VPN is resetting the connection "after several hours" for normal housekeeping within its terms of use.

I've had that, it's the ISP doing it. In the router statistics you'll see a short WAN uptime, but longer LAN uptime.

I have some control over where my VPN is connecting to.
I'm using a commercial VPN product.

I'm not changing the VPN location after connecting, there must be something on the VPN server side that's doing something which the E.D. client detects as a IP address change.

i play using 4g dongle and this has only happened since before the most recent patch. it doesnt happen often, and always i have to exit the game after and restart the whole game, because the start option at main menu is greyed out. i never had the issue before 2.3.10 (i think). so its on frontiers end not mine as evidenced by the fact we are just starting to find out its affecting lot of players. i had thought it was just me.

not read all post here. so this may have been covered. I am a VM user external ip address changes every 24hrs. other isps may change more frequently.

I'm having this problem as well - and I'm nowhere near technically knowledgeable enough to deal with IP addresses etc.
Has there been any fix for this? In my mind it's a defect - I've changed nothing except update Elite.

Cheers

I have the same problem with the game freezing 3 times in the last 30 minutes with the same issue. Claimed IP change but the IP is the same. No port chages either. frustrating part is its happening on a 600ls hypercruise and I get anywhere from 550 - 100ls away and it stops. When I eventually get in again I'm back at 600ls away. Frontier? Game is great but I dont have time to waste doung the same route over and over just because your servers cant keep up. Fix please.

From the technical perspective the following scenarios can lead to a changed IP:

- 24 hour disconnect
- Router loosing connection to ISP and reconnecting
- Switching networks with different lines to the ISP (WiFi)
- Resetting the router via disconnecting power
- using a tool with connection and password for control of the router, resetting via software
- defective connection-cable from the Router to the landline

The connection from PC to router generally is handle by DHCP,
and the routers normally reserve the ip for a prolonged time.

FYI

router log checked and no disconnect, IP change etc in the previous 8 hours. No changes recorded during the time the server claimed that the IP had changed.

WiFi channel fixed and connection stable. No drop outs, no reconnects. 30-40Mbps connection Also tried switching to wired through a POE and direct to the router. Same issue. even had a 'cant connect to matchmaker server' message twice, even before I had clicked the start option'

Internet connection, cables etc all fine. No issues. No log updates, no IP changes.

I waited 20 mins and tried again and it worked. Logs from router and Wireshark showed no disconnects, no IP changes to either internal or external IP so def been a Frontier server issue. Will monitor and see if it drops up again

Thanks for the info.
You might want to check the router settings,
especially if you use IPv6, as some manufacturers
added an option to release the public IP and renew it
afterwards, since IPv6 is concepted for every device
having a single static IP.

Wifi wise check if there are other networks in the area your PC
has login data for. If you use windows the PC might switch over, if the signal fidelity
of your home WiFi is insufficient.

It's part of that combat logging investigation some claim they don't do.

I couldn't fathom playing on wireless - wireless is so much slower than a wired connection, and running a long network cable, even making one, is not that hard... OW-O, GW-B, BW-G, BrW-Br and done.

Wireless has got a lot better, but having good kit is a must. For instance, the final hop on my internal network is wireless - my VDSL router (Draytek 2860) is connected to the rest of my network via a 5GHz wireless bridge (Apple Airport Express connecting to the Airport Extreme on the second floor). The router is generally synching at about 50Mbps, and a speed test shows I'm generally getting about 47-48Mbps throughput. It is, I have to admit, working far better than it has any right to.
