News IPv6 Support

don't know if this has been answered but will IPv6 allow the game to instance more players to what it is currently limited to? or are we just testing ipv6 and nothing will change in the future.
Probably no visible changes besides hopefully more successful connections as support for the protocol spreads.

IPv6 supposedly also comes with better multicast support which in theory could be nice, but excuse me while I'm not holding my breath for that becoming a thing.

Out of curiosity, at my home, with my own router (a Netgear D6200), IPv6 seems to work properly (a lot of direct IPv6 connections), however at my parent's home (about 40 Km from mine), with *the same ISP*, but with the ISP's router, i can't even see an IPv6 adress in the ED's network stats.
Should i blame the ISP's router or the very old desktop i have at my parent's home?
(both win10 x64 systems, but the old desktop have an asus P5E motherboard with a Q9300 CPU.... btw, that old beast, paired with a 960 GPU, still runs ED Horizons at ULTRA quite well :p)

Router or ISP issues. Some ISPs won't enable "new" features (like a protocol that was standardised some 20 years ago) for customers with old contracts, nominally because it could lead to issues, but just as much to pressure people into "upgrading".

It has never connected to IPv6 in Betas 3 and 4. For me nothing is greyed out and both v4 and v6 are enabled. It will show you the log of what was successful at connecting to what e.g. 1/1

In-game options shows which it has connected to. If both are switched ON it should have chosen IPv6 over the other and so does show if IPv6 is working.

I see an IPv6 address and that it is switched "ON". Is that the only indicator that's it's working? Or is there something else I'm missing?

Try disallowing IPV4 for Elite, or try it over another adapter that doesn't have IPV4 bound and see if it works :)

Ok will try it. Thanks AE :)

I left it on because I thought I read that it defaulted to an IPv4 connection when sharing an instance with other players who couldn't connect via ipv6?

I'd just grab a cheap USB-Ethernet adapter and experiment with that, or use wireless, and leave your main connection well alone and working normally.

I've seen people tear whole networks apart and replace NIC's and reformat machines because they got drunk one night, unbound V4, and completely forgot about it :D

Yes leaving both ON is giving IPv6 a chance to connect else it does IPv4. You will see a record of what it connects to each time where it shows 1/1 or say 1/3 in which it tried 3 times but only managed 1. If there's none in the the IPv6 for that then it means it did not try at all and so FD must have turned that off or is at fault on their Server side.

Some kind of auto network test would be handy. Something which tests the IPv6 readiness of our systems without us having to experiment or read logs to confirm.

You mean within E: D ? There are tests for your system and then there could be tests on top of that to show system plus game readiness.

I'm going to start looking into this tonight as I found that IPv6 has suddenly been enabled on my BT line, only noticeable due to the ICMPv6 errors in my router log. Didn't get chance to test IPv6 during beta so it will be interesting to see what happens in the live game.

Just keep in mind that because they say it's enabled doesn't mean that it's usable or in fact supported.
For me (on BT). I get assigned an IPv6 address and so do my devices but all IPv6 traffic is getting as far as the first BT network address and then is dropped. If you want to see futility in action you can see my thread over on the BT forums.

As for the support, no one in BT can help if you have issues. None of the support resources have any knowledge on IPv6 and I've been told that support of it is not in scope. As far as they are concerned, if you have IPv4 connectivity then they have done their job.
