Is ED on life support? A terminal decline?

Wahay, it's December's 'the game is dead' thread arriving nice and early to beat the Christmas rush. Coming hot on the heels of this month's 'four whole pounds for cosmetics is ridiculous' thread as it does, I wonder if someone could just post some FDev financial reports, a thread about how tough the Thargoids are and maybe a new one about an open PVE mode, then we can just get it all out of the way and have a clear run to the new year.

Considering how 2.4 has turned out there are probably going to be a significant number of players who will have already stopped playing the game by the new year.

I won't speak for ED, but FD seems fine, and a company performing well can continue to develop games well.

Don't get me wrong, I have a raft of problems with the game, but none that spell it's doom.

Doesn't matter one iota - others here will just cherry pick some partial sentence from an obscure report and 'claim' that proves beyond doubt that not only is FD one payday away from bankruptcy but the entire ED project has been a conspiracy just to fund other games. Charts can be produced, statements procured but they will just ignore any evidence that doesn't support their pet theorem.

But what do those charts have to do with Elite the game? Don't think anyone is discussing the death of FDev. Fact is FDev have said they're looking at two new franchises for their next efforts = two new franchises is what they will spend their cash on. They have said nothing on spending any more cash on Elite other than Beyond which is effectively a year of maintenance releases.

It is correct to assume this game may not develop much more than what it is today based on the available facts. You can call it doom if you like but if you're happy with the current game that wouldn't seem appropriate.

We shall never know the player numbers or the coin Frontier has made from the game but I have a distinct impression that things aint going so well.

Ordinarily much of the discorse over ED has been players verhmently defending their own position. There seems to be a fairly reasonable view going around that the game is stalling, that FD have moved on, and the game is on maintenance mode. Hard to say otherwise coz despite so many people who are apprently working on the game the output doesnt seem to be comensurate with that.

Of course you know, you pull in Obsidian Ant, stage a lot of devs hard at work invite him to look around, and one gullable youtuber, whose made a revenune of being 'impartial' about the game reports back on how wonderful things might be..

Some time back I distinctly remember BrettC saying that we would know when the game wasnt doing so well because the quality of the updates of the game would go down..

Call me out on this commanders but all I'm seeing is a steady decline.. A brief check on steam (oh and I know there are some who dont use steam) says that there is a certain writing on the wall.

Upper management however has cashed in..

Tell me I am wrong. ;)

You apparently have made up your mind long before this. You don't find the game fun, fine, we get it. It's time to play another one you do like, rather than use incomplete statistics and speculation to forecast the game's demise. Because the rest of us are seeing what's coming in 2018, and are quite looking forward to it.

Awwww, man! ED is dying again?! How am I going to break that news to all the new guys at Galactic Academy?! Dammit, I guess I'll just have to tell them to pack it up and wait for Star Citizen. [sad]

What's funny...people complain about "repetitive game play" in Elite, but then wave Star Citizen around as if it's better...and the "spaceship" part of the game is nothing more than doing races through rings to earn in-world money to RENT a temporary ship upgrade. That's right, Star Citizen LITERALLY has you jumping through hoops, over and over and over...

But it has so much potential! I mean, the things you hear they're going to get! :D

(P.S: But don't let this gem to be locked by starting to mention that game ;) )

Thankfully that new building that FDev poured all our money into will have lots of windows for us to spy on them through, so we can see if they're actually doing any work. Personally, I'm betting they're all in there playing with one of those little golf ball shooting things on the office floor. How else do you explain the utter lack of progress over the past few months?

Dibs on the good telescope!

But seriously, what most of the company will be working on will be the new dinosaur game, you know the one that isn't a niche game and will probably bring in a ton of money?

I don't know and nobody does. I never understand why people write these threads.

All I see are the same usual suspects splurging out the same negativity again and again.

Players on steam though have gone up. So maybe not. We will see. Also next update is only a few months away, I'm sure there will be the usual influx of players then.

I am like you, trying to work out why there is a specific group who seem hell bent on destroying the game. All they ever post is negativity (as you said), anyone who dares disagree are labelled and probably blocked. Some even admit to no longer playing the game, and they are fixated on ensuring that since they no longer enjoy the game, then no one else is allowed to enjoy the game. What is their end game, do they really want the game shelved, for FD to admit defeat since (as they say) the majority of players don't like the game and players are leaving in droves. Will they then continue to haunt the forums, blaming FD for now cancelling the game, or endless "I told you so" threads. One thing is certain, not one of them will ever acknowledge that their continued criticism of FD and the game may have had a detrimental effect.

The "utter lack of progress"? Have you not been following the open discussions and the 2018 release schedule?

Also, it's not "our" money. We gave it to them for the game, therefore it's theirs. We are entitled to play the game for that money, and no more. A fact that seems lost on many.

The game's not dead or dying, but it's definitely in maintenance mode no matter what the white knights state. If the recent and current output is from 100 developers working 40 hours a week then they're taking an awful lot of tea breaks... Michael Brookes moved, intern responsible for Galnet submissions gone, bare 2.3 update, anaemic 2.4 release, a coming year of promised core updates with community discussions about how they should go indicating they've not even been started on...

It's David Brabens baby, I don't think he'll let it die, but that not a ten year plan looks to be shaking out for a twenty stretch.

...Michael Brookes moved...

Happens all the time in corporation. People move on, new people come in. Irrelevant.

... intern responsible for Galnet submissions gone...

Citation needed.

...bare 2.3 update...

The 2.3 changelog would appear to show otherwise. More accurately, it added exactly what they said it would add, which isn't whatever you were expecting, which doesn't prove anything.

...anaemic 2.4 release...

FDev said, over and over, this would be a release played out over time, because people complained when instead of being able to find out things for themselves they only heard about other people beating them to it. Now they're giving people time to do it themselves, and people are complaining it takes too long. People need to make up their minds.

...no matter what the white knights state.

Generalizations are an easy way out of actually discussing things, I guess. That broad brush must be convenient. But again, if you made up your mind as solidly as you seem to, then it's perhaps time to play another game.

Yep, it's frustrating. I suppose if they keep saying it every year, which has been happening every year, they will be right eventually. Just seems to be a waste of time, when they could be doing something else more constructive.
