Is Elite Dangerous a Dad's Game Played mainly by "non-gamers"?

Erm...
I must be speaking some unknown language...
I said: Space is a living, vibrant 'entity'.
If you are in the slightest way familiar with astronomy, you would understand what I precisely said.

I do not think any of what you said means what you think it means.
Sounds more like astrology than astronomy to me.

I am 37, I've been a gamer since the BBC B. From Elite on that to all sorts of games on many platforms, recently Fallout4, Starwars Battlefront and Elite Dangerous.

I'm also a father...

ED and EDH are games for gamers, dads, gamer dads and gamer's dads.

I wonder if what the OP was trying to ask is, 'are most players of ED forum dads?' the type of player who played games in the 80s, and then went on to do something else for a very long time and found themselves backing a project on kickstarter having never really played much since when they were a kid.. I can see that happening. Perhaps the type of gamer who talks about 'griefing' and hates competitive game play because they simply want to relax and chill.. A gamer who just prefers solo games and hates all this multiplayer stuff because, well you know..'kids'..

Looking back there was a time when those playing ED were 35-60 if I recall past polls on the topic. I think the demographic has shifted since the game officially released, particularly so given the latest steam drama. Whilst the drama wasn't good a more diverse playerbase is good news.

I think we are all gamers, young and old and lady or gentleman.. Old age comes to us all but one thing I like about gaming is that it gives different generations something in common; a connection between generations that wouldn't have been there before. I always think 'being old' as opposed to growing older is more about a state of mind and attitude. I know some right boring gits who are in their twenties going on 60.. I'm 40'ish going on 21 and so my attitude towards games might be different to my peers.

One things for sure, and its quite nice too, we're not seen as nerds for playing computer games anymore.. :)

Well said :)

I really would like a space simulator game. Or at least something approaching it! IWAR 2 managed to excellently fake newtonian physics back in 2001. Why we can't have that in ED, i do not know. IWAR had various forms of autopilot (aka flight assist) to make quasi-starwars flight possible, but there was nothing silly like maximum speeds ...

Oh yes.
Those were indeed nice.

Then you had Freelancer, BLOODY simplistic, but GOD what a DARNED FOOD MP game, with an ever changing market (in some of the TCMods).
These things, for one, could be an AWESOME add-on to ED...

Oh no, yer not going to trick me here.

Damn, as a dad of 2 I shall stop playing Witcher 3, Halo 5, Assassin's Creed Syndicate and a whole host of other titles immediately, I shall never pick up a 'modern' game, a 'gamer game' or a twitch based pvp game again. I also swear never to want a bit of variety in my gaming library with the occasional change of pace such as Elite D, Football Manager, civilisation or the like again. I would also like to offer my sincere apologies to you 'real' gamer types, how dare I/we be any good at different games, be experienced and knowledgeable.

/rollseyes /sarcasm off /will carry on regardless.

Another one who needs to read the OP.

Speaking as the OP and someone closer to the back end of your demographic than its start, and hmmm I think older than most of the people who have commented here, in fact all who have revealed or hinted at their age ... you don't seem to have read or at least understood the OP.

lol.. I think I understood it fine. :)

OP, sorry but I can't really identify with much of what you said, but I can answer what seems to be the main bit:

I'd be interested to know what other games people play or have played, if any and no judgement if not, and in conjunction with this, what you think of ED. Or rather, how much you like it. No judgements, more research material! :p You could also mention your age. I am not saying mine!

I currently play ED and Skyrim.
I have played and enjoyed EVE Online, Civilisation, Tropico, Sim City, The Sims, DragonAge and Sid Meir's Pirates!
I'm a thirty-something y.o. woman. I'm not a Dad, that would just be weird.

I hope that helps?

Probably, yes. I mean it's, in essence, a reimagining of a game from the better part of 30 years ago so one might expect a bunch of nostalgic old farts to turn up to play it. (I'm an '84er, btw). It's probably the video games equivalent of weatherspoons pubs. Is that a problem? No. It's precisely what it's supposed to be, I think.

That's your vision of space. A theme park built for your amusement. :p

Space is mostly empty. And Life probably pointless.

Well, I got Skyrim (incl. DLCs) at the same time I got Elite.
After about 20 hours "gameplay" (most of them in godmode, actually .. yea, I'm such a cheater :p ) I was Archmage of something (quite immersive as heavy plate wearing hybrid something), the chosen one, killer of countless dwagons, owner of several homes and adopted children, couldn't enter a single village without groups of groupies wanting to mate etc.
That's a "good game".
Keeps them achievements coming.

Feels utterly pointless after 3 decades of RPGs.

i think that is the thing i love most about ED.. in a world of games that make us all hero's and gods by default, with story line progression to set us apart from the normal, here in Elites Verse, we are all just normal. we have no roadmap to greatness, with no guarantee that we will amount to anything. we are, each and every one of us, just making our way in this huge galaxy. we do have the freedom to pick and choose anything we want to do and anywhere we want to go, and that is what makes us stand apart from the rest of the BGS. this game lets us imagine ourselves in the future, living the life of a pilot in space, but it is firmly based on a possible reality, not on a fantasy. and there i think is the issue for some..

they want a fantasy where their greatness is guaranteed, not a detailed simulation of a possible future society with added game play qualities to enhance the experience and reduce time scales. a future society where they are just a normal person with the same opportunities for adventure as the rest of us. some people really don't like being reminded just how small a part of our perceived reality they really are.

It was not aimed at either of you... it was a general observation of not just this thread, or even just this forum.

However, if the cap fits...

Oh, and btw, I read every post
Well, I am not really liked a lot in here, lol.
So it was an assumption based on that.
No offense taken, btw.

I agree but I think the problem will be if they stop focussing on that.

As I said there are some very popular dadgames out there. As someone who is an inveterate gaming bargain hunter the game I have without a doubt spent most on is World of Tanks, the king of dadgames. Over a hundred pounds, possibly 2 hundred. Certainly, if you want a demographic who has the money to splash out on games, paintjobs etc, the dadgamer has it in spades compared to the impoverished 20 something.

we do have the freedom to pick and choose anything we want to do and anywhere we want to go
Except being a full combat oriented player (I do not mean PvP/Piracy).
These in the current version are nerfed into oblivion.
I need my missions to get into better reps, but i simply cannot.
One of the things addressed by me, btw, and supported by some.
