Is it worth starting over?

The problem (and I have the same issue at the moment with my LEP, triple elite, well engineered and all that) is that buying another commander at this stage means I will feel obliged to purchase Odyssey when it is released. So I end up buying twice.

new accounts dont end up costing much during sales (which are frequent) (like 14 bucks or so).

I'm sure lots of launch day players have multiple accounts. There is 0 reason to reset a long lived one. And if your primary owns a carrier, you never need to worry about losing credits at least if you decide to reset a secondary or tertiary etc character.

The game just feels dead with me going from station to station, buying here, selling there, missions here, mission there, back and and forth, back and forth, back and forth, back and fo...... OH GOD! Pirates, please do something before I go bloody stir crazy!!! o_O.
CMDR, I am here for you. My entire existence is intended to serve your stated desire for a more challenging gameplay experience.

Please do not start over, that's madness.

See you in Open.

o7,
your friendly neighborhood murderhobo

i wish there was a ship kit (along with smoking exhaust / leaking engine) that could let you really role play that murderhobo archetype. It would make much more sense to be seen more frequently than piracy. Given how infrequent proper piracy pays off.

I would... as I was thinking the same thing. When I first got this game a few months ago and saw that
Alliance Chieftain ... that is all I wanted.. so I did missions learned how to mine ( not good at) sold data from visted systems and after 6 or 7 months... I was able to save up enough credits to buy that ships... so I bought it with some funds left over.

Now I struggle with know what I want to do in the game. Combat does not interest me. Making more money does not interest me (I do not do that resource hunt for only highest paid items....the money run is no fun to me)...

Exploration is something that I am starting to explore but that is so repetitive ...as it should be.
So I feel like I am sorta done with the game and have not been motivated to play it.

So I was thinking killing off my
character and starting over and make it my quest to get another ship hull.

But if I'm honest the Chief is the only ship I really like.

Cheap alt accounts during a sale are great for changing things up a bit. My main is triple Elite, 7bn in the bank and no need for any more and flies in Open at all times with a ridiculous number of ships ( six fleets of ships around the Bubble so I don’t have to transfer anything; cargo, combat PvP ....although I’m terrible at it, combat PvE, ground mission ships, rescue ships , every kind of ship.) Its great to be able to jump in game and do whatever I feel like, wherever I am and not worry/care about whether I’m attacked and destroyed.

However, that gets boring after a while so i bought a cheap alt account that only flies a Viper MkIV and tries to make its way in the galaxy in one little ship. Open again but a rebuy is much more costly so I’m far more cautious. My third account was a one ship explorer only account (until FCs came along and now it has a mini explorer fleet.) It’s great being able to jump from one to another whenever I feel like doing something different, playing by different self imposed rules or being in a different part of the galaxy.

Having reset my second alt account once before I personally found no real challenge in repeating the early game, the knowledge was there. Doing it on your main account with so much achieved may lead to some remorse down the road.

I only ask, if you choose Open, that you accept it for what it is. A playground for both heroes and villains.

I have a main, and one alt. The alt is there for when I need to mix up my playstyles.

A reset was once a viable thing- several years ago. Just play a different way.

Im giving the Asp a shed ton of enge and then going sag A, then picking a direction. Why restart??? Game plays just like E2, except u can have multiple ships, il try find something nobody found yet.
Do some combat where you stand a chance of loosing??? That WHY i sold my panther clipper playing E2 and FE, (look below).
I used to get jumped on by falcons, egals, cobras every jump. In a panther you just let them ram u. In an Asp u turn engines off and prey you dont screw up.

X games suffer with the issue also, It can take a whole night to equip and load a carrier (without cheating - i used a clone from cheat console regulary, then i just deducted creds from my account), you spend more time in the menus than you do fighting.

So my advise is get a smaller/more venerable ship, one that requrries you to "try"

I play exclusively in open. I always have. Yet it's still difficult to come across other players even in the bubble. I enter systems with 50 fleet carriers and maaaybe I see one player on the radar (I'm guessing a lot of people are playing in solo/private)..... :p

Another suggestion: maybe find a new player to mentor? Rather than re-grinding the early game, help ease a newbie's development. This is what was done for me, and it has lead to a great new friend and a lot of in-game, cooperative fun.

Just a thought!

Yeah I reset often with an alt account to play in different ways. Just don’t do anything if it feels like you’re unfairly making too much money. Avoids the whole “got a conda in a few days” dilemma.

Only fly in open around the starter systems but sadly don’t run into many folks.

I did that with my nephew around the time Horizons dropped. Then, once he was used to the game, he buggered off to a private group with his mates...

If you want to be pirated non-stop, I'd be happy to oblige you!

Strange that you never encounter NPC pirates, however. They won't leave me alone whenever I do trade runs.

I used to get interdicted a lot, but now I hardly ever see any. I've seen other people posting about it online. I suspect it's something to do with the way the connection to the game works. Perhaps the NPC's cannot see me. They could but maybe a change to the server or P2P settings has affected something. There's too many people tslking about it for it to be nothing imo.

I raised a ticket with Fdev support and just got back a "It's working as intended" reply. Can't be working that well if some people get interdicted all the time and others don't see any pirates at all... but it seems they aren't interested in investigating it.

Maybe there is some AI logic tied to the ship you are flying. I tend to trade in a relatively defenseless T9, which makes me an easy target. If you are trading in a battle-ready Corvette or Prismatic Cutter, perhaps the NPC pirates say to themselves, "Why bother?"

Also, IIRC, the toughness of the pirates scale with your rank, so restarting is probably the exact opposite of what you want to do. Instead you may want to grind towards Elite rank in Trade & Combat to raise the difficulty level of the PvE. 🤷

I don't know what are you doing exactly, but in my play sections in my main account (only solo PVE with this one), if I take any cargo run mission, or even try some bulk cargo runs with my type 9 I will get interdicted at least by one pirate in a deadly/elite anaconda, chieftain or ferdelance. and this in high sec systems.

But I get what you say about the monotony.

I started playing oolite and seeing some videos of people playing the old Elite games, so I decided to make things more interesting in ED for me. With my second account that I had gathering dust for about 2 years now, I started a commander with some restrictions.

Rules:
  • I cannot buy any ship that costs more than 4 million in credits;
  • I can only make my home system in anarchy systems;
  • No Bounty hunting missions, bounties are only gathered by me if I am interdicted by a pirate, I cannot bounty hunt, I am a pirate;
  • No imperial or federation ranking, so any advantage these factions may give to me is out of the table;

I am having fun with this other account, and if I want to play with my corvette or any other big ship I just hop into my main account and have fun there for a while.

Was in a similar predicament as the OP (sans the Open thing) last year - bored with triple Elite account, everything unlocked.

My main account has everything they'd ever want, including FC, a fleet of 20+ engineered ships. If I want to do something specific, I can just go and do it.

My alt account (yes, I believe this is the right way to go about it) is now living in Colonia (another benefit being in two places at the same time), a fleet of 3 ships and no more, about 100m in the bank and in no rush to earn more other than for financing rebuys (I lost exactly one ship and flew in Open from the beginning - and that ship was lost to an NPC - flying a non-engineered Eagle and engaging a wing in a HazRes is not a great idea after all - fun though!). No plans for Conda let alone a FC either, I already have those on my main so why duplicate efforts.

It's the best of both worlds - the only issue is DLC (I 100% will not buy Odyssey twice, worst case I just abandon my alt but Horizons is still enough content to mess around in) and cosmetics not being shared. I get around that by being very stingy with Arx purchases and focusing on very few ships though, most of the time the free Arx are sufficient.

On my alt the mat grind is probably the worst aspect - I already unlocked all Colonia engineers bar one, getting the mats together to actually use them is quite a task and I'm not willing to grind them out. So progress is rather slow, but as a result I've grown quite attached to the ships I'm flying on it (it was a single one for quite a while actually). Glad I don't have to worry about that on the main account.
