Is piracy a viable option?

I will take your pimms (nice drink btw)

In reality I hate the stuff but it fits the minor RP persona for posts like that, what what.;) It does raise the question though as to how such players are presented in the game; are they initially classed as "Neutral" on the scanner (even if a bounty can be seen) or do they show immediately as "Hostile" if known for piracy? Or does it all depend on what type of system you are in?

I'd like to be able to play all of the roles at some point, i believe that reputations are variable and can go up and down. so over time it would be nice to try a bit of piracy, maybe the next day be a bounty hunter, and do a bit of trading along the way :)
Whether Piracy is a viable long term option? probably but you'd have to be pretty dedicated i think.

Piracy will only be viable if the loss of ship/ cargo is more than the price being asked for.
My guessing is "money or your life" will be shouted or "200000credits or your life" something like this.

If the loss of your cargo and upgrades on your ships is equal to or more than the requested amount people will pay. If you get insurance to cover all upgrades/cargo it will not be viable as people will just die and re spawn.

Piracy should work against ironman players. Although these people will be paying so as not to ruin their game.

My hope is that when you die you will re spawn with starter ship if not insured or with the ship you died in if insured but only basic starting equipment for that ship. All upgrades and cargo are lost and need to be re-purchased. Or you can go and collect a percentage of cargo from space where you died if they have not already been collected by the attacker.

I hope piracy is viable in ED just to make space more dangerous even though I will not be playing as a pirate.

I think that makes sense!

I don't think piracy among players, will be that common. Most stolen goods will come from NPCs, making it perfectly viable.

...My opinion... Pirates attempting to prey on other players will carry a criminal rating, a bounty on their heads and can only enter 'civilized' systems with great difficulty...
I expect that to be true for piracy against NPCs too.

...some of the best players in the game will be head hunting for you and you'll be forced to remain in systems where technology and upgrades are difficult to find...
Getting hunted by the best players in the game sounds like fun to me. Especially if I can also get to hang around in hidden pirate and smuggler bases, taking shady missions only available to others with my shady rep.

I aim to misbehave.

Couple of shots across the bow.. then wait for them to shoot back and hit you.. making THEM the "bad guy".. that's an interesting tactic, but wouldn't that be more effective as a bounty hunter? I don't know how quickly criminal ratings go into effect...
Can't see that working, at least against a player trader.
Worked in EVE (kinda). You could sometimes get inexperienced or jumpy players to open fire on you just by target-locking them. Which gave them the hit to security rep and allowed you "retaliation" rights.
You could also steal their stuff, which didn't provoke a police response but allowed them to fire on you. Once they had, you could fire back without legal retaliation.

Fun times.

I'm pretty sure that I read the number of people in an instance is 20...
32 has been mentioned many times, don't remember 20.

I'm not sure how the roles can be balanced as they don't really exist as such. There are activities that you can take part in such as trading, fighting, piracy etc. But no role as such that defines what you do. You could attempt to balance the activities though, so that one doesn't outweigh the other by whatever criterion/metric you choose to mention it by. But if it was down to pure earning potential, a big trading ship and some known trade routes are almost certainly going to make more money, quicker and easier, than any pirate.

I think that depends on pilot ability and equipment. Its a guess but if the cargo drops are as common in ED as the 1st 3 games given you get your cargo for free I can see it being potentially profitable, that being said, it is not a career I would follow unless this game changes the balance somewhat. In the past in every space game I have played I have found bounty hunter to be the most profitable career, certainly more than trader.

You get money for your kills, keep a clean licence and on top of that get to scoop dropped goodies the same as a pirate. Unless ALL traders are going to be law abiding which seems unlikely with smuggling etc, then I don't see how bounty hunter will ever not be the best money maker in the early/mid game.

I hope that in ED target locking and similar actions will be viewed by the "authorities" as acts of aggression (which is exactly what they are, of course!)

FD have stated their intention that no career choice will be significantly "better" than any other. While trading was the main money grabber in previous games, that shouldn't be the case for ED.

@huwthomas: I agree. Imagine you have a gun and you aim at somebody who can see you. What would you feel as the one beeing aimed at?

In EVE, locks were not illegal, just rude.
I think in E-D even deploying your hardpoints can be a bit dodgy...

Locking/deploying could be seen like going for your gun in the old West. If someone drew on you, they were fair game (at least if you believe Western movies!). You could then fire first if you were fast enough, without being branded a criminal.

I'll tell you why! A bounty hunter making a kill could give you a 1,000CR reward, 10,000CR or whatever. And you need to hunt your prey down too.

A trader with a ship that has several thousand tons of cargo space could make many more times that and he already knows where he has to go to make it. A trader will be able to plot a route of profit. The BH has to go and find it.

That makessense but only if the only people u can take a bounty from are from set missions. Iirc in the other game everyone who did not have a clean record had a bounty on them. If ED is different then the balance of power shifts but, hypothetically if any person or ai who has done anything illegal are fair game for bounty hunters then I would imagine there will be plenty of pickings without looking too hard. Time will tell I guess

PS I did say early/mid game..... I would hope a ship with over a 1000 tonnage will not be too cheap to purchase.

No, I would imagine they will be quite expensive. I expect I will probably play as a trader at first to build up a fat wodge of cash. And get the best trader ship I can find that I can effectively turn into a gunship for pirate hunting. Lure them in then blow them away! :)
