Is the Corvette worth buying at discount for the future? What is it good for?

I don't think that's the hard part: the medium ships are so much more responsive that they're a lot more fun to fly.

That's the hard part, at least for me. I first flew a Corvettte for four or five days straight in CZ's, and then decided to take a break by hopping into my Cobra and trawling Emission Sources. I hopped in, all right, but the Cobra was so much more maneuverable that I immediately did too much of everything. I actually bounced through the mail slot and the toast rack on my way out of the station. It was the funniest and most embarrassing launch I've ever made.

My Challeger does that to me as well. I nearly ping-pong off the walls with it if I've been driving the Annie for a while.

The reasons to buy a Corvette are to either say you have one or because it's the closest thing that looks like a star destroyer. The novelty of both wears off quickly. Then your left with a ship that due to a lack of speed is useless in PVP and without challenge/risk in PVE.

I love my Cutter. It has been my primary work horse and combat ship since I bought her. I just recently bought and outfitted my Corvette. That is in it's travel clothes. I went back to Sothis and Ceos and started running missions with her to get to Admiral. She handles like a Python. She laughs at NPCs. I tuned her build in HI CZs.

The best ship for any job is the one that you love flying the most. I'm going to have a tough choice between the two ships.

I just blew 101M on my third Corvette this morning, as well as getting my first ever Fed Gunship. I was slightly disappointed not to find the usual holo-ads outside the station replaced with those ‘wacky wavy inflatable arm man’ things that seem to sit outside any self respecting independent second hand car sales centre....but that’s another matter.

They’re both going to sit in Ray Gateway whilst I slowly engineer them, two full on grinds for ‘Vette mats is enough so this one can wait.

I just need to start a thread asking what exactly I should use a Gunship for. It’s just as well I don’t have 5.5billion in Sterling like I have in credits or my driveway would be full of cars I rarely drive

The Gunship is (for me anyway) one of the most fun combat ships to fly. Let fhe Federal Gunship be a real Gunship - put all guns on all 7 hardpoints, go out, and kill everything. Add corrosive guns and a fighter bay for extra fun, plus some engineering to get the speed up.

She's a fun ship - enjoy.

I use my Cutters for mining and hauling, the Vette for combat grinding

I have a Cutter, and that has a special purpose as a fast hauler. Very good at its job.

But my question is, assuming I reach the required rank (I would have to grind from Ensign to Rear Admiral, that's 6 levels of Federal rank !), is it worth my time and credits with the FD discount to buy a Corvette, even to store it for future use?

What is it good for .... apart from basking?
yes... combat

I class the Gunship as a mini-me Corvette, it`s the Tie Interceptor MK II that Darth Vader always wanted to fly on his holidays touring the outer world's.

what big ship handles better then?. Hop in a vette and fly it like you stole it, you'll die plenty often to have a reason to still earn a bit of cash. Stick it to our alien overlords, they owe me about a billion in rebuys.

How could this possibly not be worth it?

More serious though:
I quite like the first impression. She handles like a charm in SC and combat, packs good punch (even poorly engineered) and can take a beating (again, with only mediocre engineering so far). My current jump range with Guardian FSD Boost and engineering is ~30ly. Not good, but not cripplingly bad either.

So, is she worth the rank grind? Depending on where you start and what you want to do in Elite: Yes, she is. I've always wanted to own "The Big Three" and now I've finally accomplished that goal. But I only had to grind through the three or four remaining ranks, so even with the boost it could be a tiresome and "unfun" experience if you're not into shuffeling Biowaste from Station A to B for a pad on the back and some reputation points.

In the end I would suggest to you (or anyone else interested in the Fed Corvette): Just use this opportunity to grind as much rank as you like or can tolerate. The financial discount is nice (I only paid some 108 Mio Cr.), but due to the current income with mining Credits are (luckily) not the crippling limiting factor anymore.

The Cutter deserves to be considered as a unique and irreplaceable craft in it's own right. You have hit the nail on the head in calling it a fast hauler - role fit wise you can essentially consider it a larger but more combat capable Clipper.

IMO the Corvette is a better designed Anaconda without being a true 1:1 replacement for the Anaconda. The Anaconda's main Achilles's heel is it's overall geometry and weapon placement/load-out, in that regard the Corvette is by far superior but where the Anaconda wins is in optional internals (in terms of potential diversity). Of the 3 big ships the Corvette is probably the easiest to slot at Coriolis/Orbis/Asteroid stations, but it's main unique selling point is the availability of 2 Huge hard-points which serve it well in a combat setting - 2 Huge weapons on their own can dish out a lot of hull damage very quickly to (at least) other human ships.

The Corvette is the worst of "the big three".
It's not as fast as a Cutter and doesn't have comparable shields.
It doesn't have the same jump-range as an Annie or a Cutter.
It's outgunned by the Cutter and the Annie too.
In fact, the only thing the Corvette has going for it is agility and it's only slightly more agile than an Annie.

Apparently.

My own advice would be to buy one, A-rate it, engineer it and see for yourself.
Let's face it, it's not like there's anything more interesting you could be doing instead.
