"Is the game dead?" returning players keep posting here and on reddit, due to blank Galnet

They literally made the game, a space sim.

It's always interesting to watch somebody trip over basic logic so tragically on their way to throw shade.
FD have consistently delivered the most basic possible implementation of the original vision. The background simulation element of E : D is about as basic as their other sim games like rollercoaster tycoon.
Now all the story is gone it's little more than a space shooting game and a wasted chance for something great.
What a shame.

It's feels empty at the moment because, apart from stuff for new players, there hasn't been new stuff for veteran commanders to do, since the last I.I. Finished in December. People lose confidence when features are cut and vague statements about work being done is 'the biggest thing ever' and then radio silence over these things does nothing to help with the community confidence.

That said, seeing fdev recruit more people to handle (what they hope), will be an uptick in interest in the game and that they haven't cancelled the FCs yet. On Monday, Stephen was doing his best to reassure us that something was happening but it was pretty obvious that he was under orders not to say what was coming.

I remember this all this DOOM talk happening last February before the Newbie area was announced. It's just that when you have a 'Game as an online service', you have to keep the hype and/or the features coming otherwise people lose confidence that the company supports the game but you also have to make sure that the new features can be monitised so that the game is kept profitable. Getting a balance between those areas can be tricky And I don't think fdev have got that balance right at the moment.

When the new Era starts and all those people 'come back' remember you can always say that they're only Fair weather elite fans because 'You weren't there Man!! You didn't live through the Dark Times man! Where were you when the blight struck! Splitter!!'*

* The final statement is ment as a joke. I do not endorse being rude to returning players as welcoming them back is a good thing. **

** I thought I'd better clarify this as a joke because of ... Well it's the blasted forum ain't it!!

And yet here you are on the ED forums with over 1000 posts. Do you have over 100 hours gameplay too? What exactly are you complaining about? Why are you wasting your time with this game?

So yes, your moaning is nonsense, I know.

Sometimes people say something insightful or interesting, and others post what you post.

My gut feeling belief. Elite was so so spaghetti code and intertwined the things they wanted to do and were working towards either took more time or had to be dropped and other methods to reach said goal researched or just entirely new directions taken.

I don't think there was some big conspiracy or plan to stagnate. I think back door work has been going on figuring stuff out. Things R Complicated. 🤯

I dont expect them to come out and say these things wanting to be a successful company so they work on some other games while pushing out some minor what we can do right now till we get over humps phase is over. Who's going to invest or have faith in your company when you say yeah we can't do what we wanted to. Imagine this forum, if they took that approach everyone wanted and actually told the straight truth maybe we wouldnt be here and this new content wouldnt have happened... (Insert you cant handle the truth meme here).

Even if development has ceased as long as the servers are still on the fact we are all here proves the game isnt dead. I mean jesus christ this game is already five or six years old.... The fact development is still going is great in my book and I'm literally excited for anything that comes our way.

ED as is works very well at what it does, one of the most stable games I've played. So I don't see the spaghetti code thing as an issue. The spacedowhatyouwantulator side of things is absolutely nailed and the current giant of the market.

If you look at NMS and SC you've got an example of an extremely basic game that does a lot of different things pretty badly, and a terrible mess that's six years overdue and hasn't entered alpha yet.

So you've got three approaches do space really well (with more to come), do everything badly or don't achieve much at all.

Given FDEV are the only ones to have actually delivered to a very high standard on space things, maybe they were telling the truth when they said this stuff is very difficult and space-feet would be like a wholly separate game which is why the competition are lagging so far behind.

Hopefully FD will spin Elite Dangerous off to some other developer who knows how to deal with this type of game.
FD are good at sim type games so should have stuck with those.

I like you, you're very funny 🤡

Perhaps you should post your suggestions of suitable candidates to take over the franchise, but only after contacting the candidates for their 'spin' on taking the IP on?

Possibly your discontent with the creators of the IP is due to burn-out... Consider playing a little less (assuming you actually play at all) 🤔

Is this the impression Fdev wants to give people? That the game is dead?
It's not dead. It's just hibernating. :)

Until the bear wakes up again, I'm catching up on all other games I haven't played in a long time and new games that seem enticing. When time comes, I'll be back. (just have to find the HOTAS again... wherever it is)

I agree with your words. I still feel either the backend is super tricky, or their plans are super ambitious and relied on multiple interconnected systems to be adjusted to support them before it could be released (This is my general response to the what's taking so long vibe). Or the doom option of course 🤪. My credits are on the first two.

If we are getting space-feet* and FDEV are as far ahead on that as they are with space itself then it'll set a whole new bar of quality sci-fi messing about.

*I'm still not totally convinced, the mamba cockpit internal concept art was pretty persuasive though

On the topic of the thread, that according to the first poster, returning players are asking if the game is dead due to the blank GalNet: since GalNet is dead (see this CM post), it might be better to remove it from the launcher.
Regardless of how many people read it in the past or didn't, it would still be better not to showcase that there aren't any new articles.

Well said! This is what is frustrating me more than anything. The first thing any player sees is the launcher, and right now it looks just awful and very much like a dead game. While I struggle to see how getting one person to copy and paste two or three paragraphs of fluff once a week constitutes such a resource drain that the effort isn't worth it, I am willing to take FD at their word. But if that is the case, for the love of all that is holy, have some pride in your game and take a few hours to remove all the dead links and just replace them either with blurbs from FD social media accounts (the best solution as that will show that FD is still active with Elite) or just put a piece of splash art there instead. Just walking away from the launcher and leaving it in a state of disrepair is daft for a game that is still being developed.

On a related note, MassivelyOP has picked up Frontier's latest comments about GALNET being dead for the foreseeable future:

Frontier tells Elite Dangerous fans there are ‘no plans’ to return GalNet and other lore initiatives to the game

Legs arnt something I personally would pick but I will embrace them non the less if its what comes. I'm kind of enjoying not knowing what's coming and whatever it is I'm sure its going to be cool. Looking forward to see more of Frontiers vision for Elite and how it gets fleshed out.
