Is there any advantage to owning a boxed copy of the game?

Afaik, there's been no confirmation that the boxed editions will include a manual. Hopefully we'll get a nice thick manual and not just a "quick start guide" and a pesky pdf.
Additionally I'd really like to have the fine blueprints of the ships too, or at least a ship identification chart.

Its probably not hugely valuable in money terms at the moment. However, as time goes by I notice vintage computers going on ebay for an ever increasing amount. 30 years from now with few working models surviving these things could be quite valuable.

That should be true of old classics like ELite.

I don't now possess anything that I had in the '80s but the one thing I wish I did still have is my original copy of BBC Elite.
I didn't own a BBC, I could only play it at school or around friends houses but I still got a lot of pleasure reading the literature and looking at the box.
How sad is that?

Includes a T shirt with "I backed Elite: Dangerous" on the back, an A3 Star Map and a paperback copy of the official sequel to "The Dark Wheel", from the kickstarter, then there is that content, plus the other lower tier bonuses that were included, like the options to start with different ships and systems.

Yeah, I read that when I backed the game But there were a lot of comments from people who liked the idea of a paper manual, and I wondered if Frontier had given any consideration to it.

I bought it assuming it was included, as this was the highest non-alpha tier available at the time in the upgrade store.

Now with the new store, I'm not so sure.

No, as there is no expansion pack right now. If you paid £80(?), you were granted access to future expansion packs after the 1.0 product is shipped. But they won't be in the box.

I still got the box version of Elite (NES) and of Frontier (AMIGA), and i love it !

I can't imagine playing Dangerous and not having the box version, don't matter if there is expension packs in it or not (i'm a backer

I chucked away all my boxed copies of Frontier and FFE years ago when I had stopped playing them, and whilst I had them I never looked at the contents much as I remember. And you can pick up old Forntier games for next to nothing now so they wont go up in value, just down.

So it comes down to personal preference, mine is that the paper stuff will just take up valuable space in my house so I am getting digital only. I considered getting books, artwork and all that at one point but tbh I will never look at it more than once, and all I am bothered about is getting the game. Perhaps if I had a massive house with loads of storage I might be tempted to get a box, but I can always do that later on and for a lot cheaper than they are available right now.

So as a practical person I eventually got the minimum I could get away with (ie the game) and will get everything later after the game has come out on Ebay if I feel the need then. But of course that was when you got access to the Founders World, Commanders Name and 500 credits etc. I wouldnt buy the game now because you dont get anything other than the game. I would wait until the game comes out and buy it then as it will be a lot cheaper, unless you feel the absolute need to gain access to the alpha or beta stages, or to support Frontier's development costs.

If it's like an old school release, with a big box and a big manual then I'm definitely happy I went for a boxed copy. I don't want to see a DVD case with a pathetic leaflet posing as a 'manual'.

Thanks. That's what I expected, cause I was rather shocked, when I first logged in on the new store site, that only the £50 standard beta package was listed, and that there was the existence of this "expansion pack" and this was NOT included on my order.

Then there were several confused threads from others and myself about this, and apparently it was because the new store didn't have the kickstater extras in, but the expansion question was skipped, so I was still unsure if it would be included.

Because what it looked like was a had paid £90, then found out on the new store that there was only £50 there, minus the expansion.
