Is this a nerd game?

If you ask if this is a nerd game you will get a resounding yes, because most, even though in today's terms are not nerds, like to believe they are as it's cool nowadays :)

20 years back a nerd would be someone who had a phone, had written some code to do cool stuff, has used Linux as their daily OS for atleast a year and had an interest in all things techy

Today that's almost everyone, so to me to be part of the nerd-dom you need to have written code in several languages including C and dabbled with a functional language like Haskell/Mynad, have not just created a web page with some javascript but created a server side framework based DB driven custom site in Python, have designed an electrical circuit and written assembler for the microprocessor used in it and not just used a Raspberry Pi once or twice....etc etc

So, is this game nerdy, No, but this game is worth every penny and will continue to get better and better I am sure :)

I am officially not a nerd, as a teenager introduced me as 'kinda cool' to one of her friends, and that's all the qualification I need.

Therefore Elite is not a nerd game.

Don't let me stop you nerds playing it, though...

What qualifies one as a nerd anyway? Ive been a fast and modified car nerd since the mid 80s, so does that make me a car nerd? A gamer since the early 80s...absolutely a nerd. An indoor horticulturist since the mid 90s...a gardening nerd and the less said about that, the better :x

A mountain biker from the days when any suspension was considered a joke...so Im a cycling nerd in bygone days who used to shave my legs and wear garish lycra while charging down mountains that require ski lifts back to the top.

What is a nerd? Anyone with a hobby apparently ^

Only 10 a week, you need to pick up the pace or your nerd card will be revoked.

I try, but there are only so many "Spot the Dog" books in my local library, I was thinking of reading Harry Potter but the advanced vocabulary put me off ;-)

It's a Dad Game.

My daughter disagrees...shes just discovered the joys of getting used to landing and taking off again as we speak on the ps4. Lets just say the language coming from her room this morning was...most unladylike

Shes at the painful stage of intitially. loving the idea in theory, and realizing the reality aint all its cracked upto be...fun times. I cant wait till she gets ganked fer the first time...only another father will understand why Im really really looking forward to her future frustration and anger. Teenage karma...make my life a living hell and Ill get her addicted to a game that will test her patience...happy days ^

Its a nerd game in as much as its definitely NOT for CASUAL GAMERS who need hand holding at every turn, and expect to complete the game in 12 hours. ;)

Nerds have evolved way past tape repaired glasses and plastic pocket protectors that's for sure.

Our game is a proudly niche game that delights confounds madden's and causes addiction.
Yup. Nerdgame.

It is a nerd game, but aren't they all? What games do the cool kids play?

Nose pick fling.

Nup. Didn't get a word of that.

Well that's me out then. I've thought of myself as a nerd since high school in the 80s. I obviously have a lot of learning to do.

So what was that again, Haskells being served on the circuit with Raspberry Pies? Hang on, I'll just get a pen.

Depends on what your definition of nerd is.

If you mean 'A nerd is a person seen as overly intellectual, obsessive, or lacking social skills. Such a person may spend inordinate amounts of time on unpopular, little known, or non-mainstream activities, which are generally either highly technical, abstract, or relating to topics of fiction or fantasy, to the exclusion of more mainstream activities. Additionally, many so-called nerds are described as being shy, quirky, pedantic, and unattractive, and may have difficulty participating in, or even following, sports.' (Wikipedia), then no, it is not.

I play Elite but I am none of the above, though I will admit to being quirky.

Oh gosh.. I guess I'm a nerd then.. except for the sports part. I dabbled in martial arts a bit.. but I guess that could be considered a nerd sport as it is not mainstream :)

Take that back another 20 years. Design 8 and 16 bit microcontroller-based circuits for early storage devices you help invent, then write all of the code in assembly because the C compilers of the day were not able to write small enough or efficient enough code when everything had to fit in 32K of PROM space. Or convert mathematical algorithms used to track objects in space to Octal micro-code for early 8-bit main frames and input your programs using the front panel switches. Then single-handedly design a deterministic, preemptive RTOS and complete 6 DOF system and hire a team to write the millions of lines of code in C for this DARPA project I probably still can't talk about.

I like to think many aspects of this game are nerdy, outside of the pew-pew. Sounds like I'm just a older version of you. We're not related are we? :)

If we're honest, almost all games are some kind of "nerdy", but Elite is definitely a "classic nerd" kind of game, for sure. As in, star trek/wars loving, D&D playing, dress up like the classic cylons from BSG for comicon kind of nerd. I'm one of those.

More than a nerd game, it's a game that caters well to nerdyness.
You can nerd hard if you like or you can just relax and enjoy the ride.
