Is this a rip off? Or is this Frontier first encounters all over again?

They have about 10M bgp in cash outside funding besides KS money. Shares sale and credit line. You can read it all in their public report to minority shareholders.

ED project has that, or FD as a whole? I can easily find out how much FD have, but not how much is earmarked for ED (beyond the initial KS funding, of which we don't know how much is left).

I think, and I am sure anyone will jump in and tell me if I am wrong, that no one is really fussed about extended delivery dates per se; it's not a patience thing. It's that myself and others like me (not everyone of course, some people really are not fussed about this) would like to know *why* dates have slipped. And whilst we might make some educated guesses on this point, we'd like to hear it from an authoritative source in FD.

They can deliver it in 2020 for all I care, but I am interested in the reasons behind the events because it might point to an increased level of risk for the project, or indeed it might be a marker of a substantially improved end product. And I guess I simply have a general interest in it anyway, because I'm a Founder and it makes me interested in what they are up to.

And amazingly, this simple discussion is probably the hottest thread on here!!

doh! back again :D

come play alpha with me and you figure out yourself why estimated dates have slipped* ... it was a crashfest (well for me at first anyway) and has been improving by the day.

do you need to do the debugging?!

or a list of the most common crashes?!

there are things that need improving before the next phase will be rolled out. like stability/connectivity for one. and as we have no idea what kind of quality criteria FDEV have set, we have no idea when it will be ready. and it would not make sense for FDEV to share minute detail of the testing with everyone. they already share the full alpha virtually by not enforcing NDA...

it is enough, let go :D

*hint: alpha testing 2.1 is not ready/done yet. and if there were a significant delay they would have to report via AIM/FDEV anyway.

no consensus.... of course not.

there are two groups here (possibly more) one that, having made its £35 'investment', feels the need for continual updates on all aspects of progress. the other group (including me, and it was a lot more than £35) who are saying 'let me know when something interesting happens'

there is no bridge there that i can see....

@op given that you had such a bad experience all those years ago why did you back this project?

hey, if a dog bites me i sure as **** ain't going to try and stroke it again.

Hi jedt.

Again, just my 2ps worth, but in my experience happy backers/customers/stakeholders etc result from communication that:

(A) Sets up an expectation - "It's Friday, must be nearly time for my weekly from FD... can't wait!"

-and then-

(B) Meets that expectation - "There it is in my inbox - look at that concept art... cooooool!" etc.

The problem begins when you set up an expectation but then start to not deliver for whatever reason. People begin to feel excluded or make up "conspiracy theories" - it hurts the relationship between a brand and its customers and people feel like an implicit code of trust has been broken.

All very melodramatic, I know! And not totally rational, if truth be told.

But that's just what people are like.

Also, if FD want to grow/leverage their community base, they do need to be a bit more forthcoming - you don't call your friends only when you've got something earth-shattering to say, sometimes it's just good to chat! And the more you chat the better friends you become. If they just want to disappear and only reconnect when there's something massive to say, that's fine - but there's a penalty to that approach in terms of customer involvement/advocacy that they need to be aware of.

It'd be very easy for FD to address these issues - it wouldn't be more than their currently doing - just with a bit more structure and regularity to it. I'm confident they will do so once the early, tricky stages of Alpha are nailed down.

FDEV have publicly stated that all ks & pre-order goes into ED & ED technical development, a portion of that (400k?!) has been allocated in the last 6 months. rest to hit their bottom line for the year end :D

FD got several million out of the IPO, but they also got additional private investment in E: D specifically. The details that were released were sketchy as I recall, but the upshot was that it gave them more freedom to make E: D a better game... even in so far as not relying 100% on good initial retail sales to begin work on expansions like EVA and planetary landing.

Do you work for FD?

No. But then again, with that tone, you weren't really asking a question anyway...

If you don't work for FD, what business do you have spreading supposition and misinformation?

Thanks to Juniper for digging that one up. There's another post which I can't seem to find right now but suffice to say, FSD came up in official statements as being a complex addition. The post I mean talked about the fact that people wanted to not be limited to a few locations in a system, but wanted to really travel around freely, kinda like the old stardreamer device, but in a multiplayer-compatible way. Basically the statement was that FSD was a time consuming addition that wasn't initially planned, but that they felt was neccessary to really make this an Elite game.

Could this and its relation to the planned release date have been communicated in a more clear and obvious way? Perhaps.

Yes, I have read the thread, & it seems to me that people are complaining about the lack of communication because of impatience caused by slipping dates, hence my comments.
I may be totally wrong, of course. It wouldn't be the first time. ;)
You're totally wrong :p At least where I'm concerned at any rate. Can't speak for anyone else. I'm loving the alpha and I'm not in any rush for the finished game. But I'd still like improved comms from FD :)

Haha, I'd love to but I am not an alpha backer, I backed to Founder on the basis I knew I simply would not have enough time to devote to alpha.

But the amount of time I have spent in this thread I think I probably might have been able to play alpha after all...;-)

Apparently neither yourself nor JeffRyan have read the thread - NOWHERE have I complained about the alpha. :p

Err... I have. I meant love the alpha, not in a rush, would like improved comms if possible. (But not too bummed at this point like I was in mid-january). As I've said over and over and over.

Thank you. The cheque's in the post. And I promise not to release those compromising photographs. You know the ones... where you're walking around your hangar bay in Star Citizen. :p

Yeah... I could never quite give money to Chris despite looking at the packages various times.

You expect me to read a 36 page thread?! Are you insane?!? :p

To be fair, no one needs to read the whole thing, they can read say 2 pages and put them into a loop and get the vibe of the whole thread:

"I want better quality comms"
"You don't need it, leave FD alone"
<Insert random tetchy comment>

Repeat to fade...

I must be sick to still be here myself!
