General / Off-Topic Is this forum incubating?

Patience. The forum will erupt with salt and rage when Q4 hits. Regardless of how good it is, something will be found which will resume the "game is doomed" movement.

I can't wait.

I can't wait.

My guesses are; "infinite probes ruin my immersion, again!", "lack of space legs is a huge let down, again!", "BGS changes blah blah blah rage quit!", and "all my progress from beta is gone, blah blah blah rage quit". :p

Playstation sub-forum is pretty dead, but then again we have tons of new games to play. I haven't done anything serious in ED for a few weeks now. The reason I'm still somewhat active in the forums is because the best way to pass the time while sitting on the loo :p

I recently discovered Skyrim and put over 200 "immersion" mods on it. I even managed to get it working and play it a bit. Now I can't go back to Elite without chuckling at my hungry, tired pilot's numb backside, chained to his seat as a slave to his own ship, in perpetuity.

Elite will likely never have space legs let alone any survival aspects like food or sleep. It isn't detailed enough to keep my interest. Just assuming you get all the food, water and sleep you need doesn't cut it. Not being able to see what your ship looks like on the inside gives me no sense of home. There's no crew to interact with. Power creep, profit creep, making the game easier, making the game flashier and shiner takes away from the grit. Implementations of mechanics that are anathemic to me, like engineers and telepresence.

The game has continued to move further and further away from the feel and potential of the first and early second seasons.

Season one was amazing. The implementation of planets and landings was top shelf. Best flight model and peripheral support of any space game. Best sound design I'v ever heard. The emptiness doesn't bother me as much as the caving to common denominators. Turning it into a console game.

Elite is a good example of why I don't go into business for myself: You have an idea but end up either doing the same thing as everyone else or failing. So be fake to get money or be real and eventually suffocate and die. They had a good run of a couple years but it's clear this game will never be anything close to what I was sold on.

Still got my money's worth. Still park on a planet and stare at my screen, once a month or so. The console crowd expectations killed it, that's my obtuse generalization catch-all belief. Some things they implemented killed the spirit of the game. Those things can't be removed or replaced now. A rotten foundation. Gotta rebuild the whole house.

That's why I'm not around, anyway. I check the forums about once per week, four times as much as I play and anything I do find is disappointing. I still hold a fools hope but I've moved on. Someone else will make a better space game but the things Elite did right will be absent and that will also be a shame.

Well, distracted by my own quests of Galactic domination and a slight conflict with some Gallstones, trying to escape via my Pancreas etc.. I have not been on-line of a while. From the 15th, in fact; but I never thought I would have been missed, that much.

And the rest of the mods, can't put them on ignore and goodness knows I have tried so many times :)

True story...I got infraction points a few years back after asking if it was possible to just block specific mods which I offered to name in a pm. I didnt mean it, I knew it wasnt possible I just wanted to antagonize them with the question being rhetorical. It certainly appeared to have the desired effect at the time and I laughed so hard I near passed out.

When it gets to that point, its time to walk away...fer yer own sake and everyone elses...thats the point where ye have to ask yerself if its really worth it when its already an echo chamber of the same old voices arguing over what are semantic points at best.

The place got boring basically...even light hearted fun threads got moved to the forum graveyards in the subs or just locked fer having some fun on. Cant be having that now these are not the droids yer looking for...

At the time, there were other quite active threads poking fun at players who were on a break from the game, but still active on the forums...poking fun at us fer being on the forum at all like its some sorta little club and yer no longer required or even wanted...

And then they wonder where everyone went...the blind leading the blind some things never change. Many here became very toxic while jeering at what they regarded to be toxic...mods loved them too...didnt go unnoticed...left...self inflicted ye just dont see it ^

That's hilarious, what a way to operate! :D

Oh I've done the forum thing before to the point where it mattered too much, realised it and deleted the account. It's funny, I popped back there after a few years and the same old people were saying the same old s... just going round in their circles. Still, as long as they're happy.

These mods here aren't even slightly annoying :) I know you can't block them which was why I posted that and wouldn't wish to anyway. There should be an 18+ politics and religion section though, that would be quite something :D

Funny how a little shove in the wrong direction and the resulting feedback loop can totally destroy the vibe of a place, by the time people realise what's happening it's too late. Something something bucket of crabs.

As per this "There should be an 18+ politics and religion section though, that would be quite something "...

We use to allow such discussions here in the OT section, but it kept up on the slippery-slope. After a good length of time, it was decided by Frontier, not the mods, to forbid such discussions globally on our forums. :p

The other 50% of me wants to make a semi-private section on the forums for such discussions, but that'll be shot down with the quickness. ;)

Personally, I think that it was a good decision.
It's not about politics, religion, etc. themselves nor about how much heat they usually attract. It's about the fact that it simply adds too much work for the mods, imho.
When comes to these topics, people simply can't keep it calm.

.................... and I thank them for that. Do not want...............
