Issue Tracker: Planetary Tiling

Excellent decision, team.
Now, please, please, please, focus on the aliasing/shimmering issues that (unlike tiling) are perfectly capable of taking away any joy from exploring the galaxy.

Wondering how "enjoyable" it is for Tencent to see their stake at Frontier getting burned and suddenly worth less than half... 🤔
China just lifted their eight month games development ban so Tencent is probably focused on other things, and even during the ban, their myriad of investments in game companies means that they were likely not too concerned with how fickle the games industry is, investment-wise for one company, or another.

Any piccy's showing what this tiling issue actually is?

Been on many, many Planets & either haven't noticed it or ignored it ;)

Yeah it's there sure, but the screenshots in the issue report are some of the most egregious and rarely do I see anythign even close to that level. You only really see this if you're searching for it basically.

Any procedural generation is always going to have weird outliers.
I haven't encountered it as much as in some of the reports, but I didn't really have to go search for it either (I've done 200-250K LY post-Odyssey and I encountered it occasionally). And even though those tiles are a part of the procedural generation, the variety and implementation just isn't the best.

Oh yeah for sure still happens, but I don't see them as severe enough to notice terribly often. I've also done at least that many lightyears myself and have led two expeditions (Celebration of Early Astronomy 3 & 4 since Odyssey release as well)

Greetings Commanders,

We’d like to take this opportunity to address the Tiling Planetary Features issue from the Issue Tracker.

After spending some time to observe the effects of the issue while weighing-up the costs to resolve it, we have decided to focus those resources elsewhere. Reducing or preventing the tiling effect would require a deep-overhaul of fundamental systems, which in turn would disrupt other aspects of the game. This would inevitably take time away from developing and improving other elements such as performance, bug fixes, and new content. We cannot justify this level of change and a re-generation of the galaxy in Elite. This is unlikely to change in the future so the issue will be closed, freeing up votes on the tracker for other issues.

We’ll continue to strive for the best possible experience for the highest number of players which our current focus allows us to do. We hope you’ll appreciate the reasoning behind this decision.

Thanks Bruce for telling us the situation. Keep up the info comms. o7

It is an objective issue, but as others have said here, not always the most noticeable. This is disappointing though, given how cheap looking the current planetary generation can be compared to the old at times. Slapping a few different height map textures around a planet, with random sizes and rotations, is very noticeable at times.

We’ve heard a lot recently about what Frontier can’t do in regards to this troubled Odyssey expansion, so I am hoping to hear some good news for a change soon.

Great. Really kind of a buzzkill for people who primarily explore like me, but we should start reaping the benefits of all of these cut/abandoned things (console development, planetary generation, VR, etc.) soon, right? I'd really like to know where this mythical "elsewhere" mentioned every time it's said that "resources are better allocated elsewhere" is.

I've unfortunately got a few bodies I frequent in the bubble that have that tiling "crumpled paper" effect from the early Photoshops, depending on the lighting it's pretty noticeable. Other than that, it was never really on the top of my list. I'd still prefer if they fixed all the gamma/contrast/lighting issues, restored most of the missing effects from Horizons and got performance up to an acceptable level first.

That's why I feel this decision is a blow to all the hopes I had associated with the game. It's almost like saying: "This game no longer has a future in the long term". I hate to say it, but this is the first time something like Doom has blown up in my face.
Now I never really pinned my hopes on a long lasting existence (as with any game) due to times and markets changing and all that, but if anything, I would've wished for a more graceful exit.

Also, wasn't the original plan some 10 year vision? We're pretty close to that as it is, so it wouldn't be entirely unexpected.

Will a small portion of those resources give us back SRV tracks? FC ATC recognising their CMDR? Increase tritium yields from asteroids? Get tritium directly to the FC depot instead of via the ship? Stop the black adder crash on first ship jump after a carrier one?

Yes, I know there's probably a million and one things more important but these are my pet peevs: there are many like them but these ones are mine... etc.

:D

Seriously ?
Yes.
They broke the planet tech that made ED unique and different by moving to a worse and simpler way to generate planets.
Swings and roundabouts. Changing the planet tech will always have some who prefer it and some not, no matter what they did.
Did it give us better looking planets ? - for the majority, No.
The majority? The opinion of the majority of players? I've no idea. In my opinion the planet are better and give locations and views that Horizons can't, and even "fixing" the tiling wouldn't get the Horizons planets back. They're gone, in EDO.

If you meant the majority of planets better? Yes, for me.
Did it give us better performance ? - definitely not!!
Nope, worse performance. What's that got to do with redoing the planets again?
Did it make it easier for FDev to cut-n-paste their boring and dull settlements on to planets ? - definitely - it's the reason they changed the system.
Citation required lol.
The terrible performance in Odyssey was one reason I stopped playing, until I got a new PC last month that problem wasn't solved, the 2nd reason was the downgrade to planets making exploration dull and pointless.
Oh well. I'm enjoying it more than I've enjoyed Horizons for a number of years.

People and their differing opinions, eh?
