Issue Tracker: Planetary Tiling

I'm fine with this. The salt from the community if the whole galaxy was rebuilt again would be worse, and the time to do it would have been early on.

If the resources are now to be allocated to additions, in exploration terms to the new planetary types etc, I'd be delighted.

I hope it will be possible to merge the new planetary tech into Horizons (I guess different planetary tech to be the biggest obstacle to EDO and EDH players sharing instances) without merging the rendering engines (as I guess Odyssey’s poor performance is primarily caused by all that PBR stuff).

Don't get your hopes up. There will be no merge, only removal of the 3.8 client, and putting everyone (on PC) on the 4.0 client.

Yea, i dont think it's possible to merge the new planetary tech in the 3.8 horizons client.

Best choice would be a combination
- keep it as a legacy client v3.8 for as long the consoles still run the same client
and
- offer Horizons mode in the v4.0 client so people with the base game can play the space game along the Odyssey players. Pretty much like it happened with base and horizons players before EDO.

Would be nice to get more details what FD is currently working on, now that they have freed up resources previously used for consoles and tiling fixes.

What makes you think there were Any resources allocated to Console port and resolving the Tilling issue?
Console port was on Hold since July or so
Tilling was it even worked on? Nope. (Bruce just said it in this very thread. They analyzed the issue and came to the conclusion it will require too many resources.)

Greetings Commanders,

We’d like to take this opportunity to address the Tiling Planetary Features issue from the Issue Tracker.

After spending some time to observe the effects of the issue while weighing-up the costs to resolve it, we have decided to focus those resources elsewhere. Reducing or preventing the tiling effect would require a deep-overhaul of fundamental systems, which in turn would disrupt other aspects of the game. This would inevitably take time away from developing and improving other elements such as performance, bug fixes, and new content. We cannot justify this level of change and a re-generation of the galaxy in Elite. This is unlikely to change in the future so the issue will be closed, freeing up votes on the tracker for other issues.

We’ll continue to strive for the best possible experience for the highest number of players which our current focus allows us to do. We hope you’ll appreciate the reasoning behind this decision.

Dammit, I've just taken delivery of a large quantity of red marker pens. What am I going to circle with them now?

It only took 11 months to figure out they couldn't do it, so any solution would indeed take them 4 to 5 years at least.
They needed 2 years to do the whole expansion. So the creation of the planet tech necessarily required less. And should require even less for changes.

Honestly I do not even care anymore. Someday we will probably have a new Elite Dangerous game. This current one seems rotten to the core at this point.
In the defence of FD, I think they set out to create a codebase that was easier to work with going forward - looking at all the non announced changes from Horizons to skybox, lighting etc. But it would seem they fell in the the old "i can make this better in half the time it took to get there" trap.

One could fear that they ended up where they started. Looking very much forward to how the story is going to move on, as per Brabens post.

Seriously ?
They broke the planet tech that made ED unique and different by moving to a worse and simpler way to generate planets.
Did it give us better looking planets ? - for the majority, No.
Did it give us better performance ? - definitely not!!
Did it make it easier for FDev to cut-n-paste their boring and dull settlements on to planets ? - definitely - it's the reason they changed the system.

The terrible performance in Odyssey was one reason I stopped playing, until I got a new PC last month that problem wasn't solved, the 2nd reason was the downgrade to planets making exploration dull and pointless.

Having said that, I still challenge the design decision to completely re-roll all previously discovered Horizons planets. There was history there in people's discoveries that is being overwritten and it would be good to hear about the technical limitations that prevent these historical planets from appearing the same.
Much as this would be better getting an explanation from FD, I would say it’s fairly obvious. To have the Horizons ones stay as-is would mean that there would need to be two different planet generations systems running at the same time. And both would have to be maintained.

Besides there was discovery history lost in Horizons when the beige plague was cured in 3.0. So it’s not like what’s in Horizons currently is somehow sacrosanct.

Actually @Bruce G are you able to confirm if the stopping the work on planetary tiling issue means that stuff like above examples will not get looked at either, or is it strictly the tiling itself that you're stopping investigation of?

(Or stuff like that: https://clips.twitch.tv/CalmRefinedFennelPanicBasket-uhTjHBP-EnSKXtS2 )

Would be very useful to know! o7
Look, they need to move the 100-man team to other projects. There is no dedicated dev-team to Elite. FD are a project driven business. Not a product driven one.

You know, after they dropped the ball gameplay-wise many years ago (with a terrible Powerplay and a half-baked BGS concerning game balancement) I did not expect they could do the same with the planets as they are apparently doing right now. They are investing a lot in the central narrative, being community goal driven as it's always been, but that's simply grinding the very same simplicistic action over and over again. It's infuriating considering the possibilities, but it's crystal clear there's no intention for the foreseeable future to make the game fair and challenging. Forum-dads won the battle, the game is slowly dying. Coincidence? I do not think so, but it was very easy to anticipate.
