Issue Tracker: Planetary Tiling

Wait... they actually completely wiped the issue from the tracker? Not only that, you still can search for "tiling" but only get one result, that leads to the broken link. Now I wonder, is the word "tiling" already banned in the issue tracker? Will it even be banned on the forum?
There is a possibility that there are players who don't frequent this forum or their other outlets and will, in due time, open up a new issue for this. If so, I know where my free vote is going.

Well, since the tilling issue was apparently deleted from the tracker, guess all future badly tilled planets will go in this very thread... as examples of... how DBOBE said?
"bad procedural generation"? "bad art"?

"There is also bad procedural generation. [...]We see things where we can see the patterns, they're too simplistic, it's too obviously computer generated. And the problem with that, it's, I mean, essentially it's bad art if you like."

I was able to view the issue a minute ago on my phone, but not on my desktop... so I think the issue tracker's just broken (like it always is)

As Bruce alluded to though, to fix it would mean a hell of a lot of work, for what return? In the end

losing Dr Kay Ross... was a such irreplaceable loss?
I am pretty sure that the decision would have been the same with her still on board.

Indeed, if I find anything surprising in the said decision, it is that it took so long to make.

Hopefully this includes leaving Horizons as-is on PC rather than replacing it with Odyssey Lite. This will give the best experience to the highest number of players (some of us prefer Horizons over Odyssey) while also enticing those who really want Odyssey features to pay you for those features. 🤞
Hopefully the merge will happen, and soon, purely to enable those of us who enjoy playing EDO to be able to play alongside friends who do not own the expansion, rather than downgrading to Horizons to play together.
I hope it will be possible to merge the new planetary tech into Horizons (I guess different planetary tech to be the biggest obstacle to EDO and EDH players sharing instances) without merging the rendering engines (as I guess Odyssey’s poor performance is primarily caused by all that PBR stuff).
Now if Frontier were to release Odyssey Lite while also leaving the option to log into Horizons Legacy, then I'm totally fine with that. I'm not opposed to the creation of Odyssey Lite, I'm opposed to the deletion of Horizons Legacy.
TBH I would like an option to play with the legacy planetary tech, too, even though probably I would use it only once in a proverbial blue moon.

[...]

Having said that, I still challenge the design decision to completely re-roll all previously discovered Horizons planets. There was history there in people's discoveries that is being overwritten and it would be good to hear about the technical limitations that prevent these historical planets from appearing the same.
I can imagine the decision was not taken lightly, but I do think it was the right decision to make. The new planetary tech is not as much a “re-roll” as a complete change of rules.

As for what prevents “these historical planets from appearing the same”, I think it is not as much technical limitations as human resources limitations; IOW, they do not have the manpower needed to do detailed modelling (including blending with the neighbouring terrain) for all those historical locations.

You wish. And me too.

Don't get your hopes up. There will be no merge, only removal of the 3.8 client, and putting everyone (on PC) on the 4.0 client.

Exploration is pretty much dead then. Since only explorers really care if planets look good and interesting.
Odyssey is a serious downgrade in how planets are generated, gone are the unique procedurally generated planets leaving us with planets with simpler height maps and hand made assets just scaled and rotated at random to try and look unique, often resulting in the obviously 'tiling'.

Those that only play the 'space' part of the game won't care because they rarely go low enough to notice.
Those that actually have hardware capable of playing the Odyssey ground content seem happy enough to just run around shooting NPC clones at the dozen different layout cut-n-paste 'settlements', they won't care.

Odyssey offers only an insult to explorers anyway with the bare minimal effort biological scanning tool and the pointless ( and worthless ) grind for ex-biology.
So with this announcement, exploration is dead.

This is fine !
On the bright side, you still have a long list of issues you can safely ignore so you can divert resources to, huh, something else !

Actually @Bruce G are you able to confirm if the stopping the work on planetary tiling issue means that stuff like above examples will not get looked at either, or is it strictly the tiling itself that you're stopping investigation of?

(Or stuff like that: https://clips.twitch.tv/CalmRefinedFennelPanicBasket-uhTjHBP-EnSKXtS2 )

Would be very useful to know! o7

Greetings Commanders,

We’d like to take this opportunity to address the Tiling Planetary Features issue from the Issue Tracker.

After spending some time to observe the effects of the issue while weighing-up the costs to resolve it, we have decided to focus those resources elsewhere. Reducing or preventing the tiling effect would require a deep-overhaul of fundamental systems, which in turn would disrupt other aspects of the game. This would inevitably take time away from developing and improving other elements such as performance, bug fixes, and new content. We cannot justify this level of change and a re-generation of the galaxy in Elite. This is unlikely to change in the future so the issue will be closed, freeing up votes on the tracker for other issues.

We’ll continue to strive for the best possible experience for the highest number of players which our current focus allows us to do. We hope you’ll appreciate the reasoning behind this decision.

May we have the very same statement for Powerplay?

Oh, wait: there's no resources invested in Powerplay already, silly me.
