Issue Tracker: Planetary Tiling

Greetings Commanders,

We’d like to take this opportunity to address the Tiling Planetary Features issue from the Issue Tracker.

After spending some time to observe the effects of the issue while weighing-up the costs to resolve it, we have decided to focus those resources elsewhere. Reducing or preventing the tiling effect would require a deep-overhaul of fundamental systems, which in turn would disrupt other aspects of the game. This would inevitably take time away from developing and improving other elements such as performance, bug fixes, and new content. We cannot justify this level of change and a re-generation of the galaxy in Elite. This is unlikely to change in the future so the issue will be closed, freeing up votes on the tracker for other issues.

We’ll continue to strive for the best possible experience for the highest number of players which our current focus allows us to do. We hope you’ll appreciate the reasoning behind this decision.

Good choice. The “issue” was blown way out of proportion. It should surprise absolutely nobody that we are playing a game and that the smoke and mirrors sometimes will show in something as complex as EDO.

Keep up the good work!

And yet, what Braben says about it :

And yet, what Braben says about it :
I think his words repeated that way are being twisted out of proportion. If procedural generation could generate everything perfectly and seamlessly for all planetary bodies in the game, it would basically be the Divine Code and we could all retire into a non-repeating perfect world more realistic than the one we occupy instead.

Many people almost celebrating this news and calling it a good decision likely don't realise the gravity of the situation. Cuts are being made to development because of cost. Resources are constrained and sacrifices are being made. This isn't something to be celebrated and it probably isn't the last of the sacrifices. Gone are the days of groundbreaking tech and clever development as the game is settling for mediocre results. Worrying times ahead ...

Yup, it is kinda depressing you have to spell it out. I wonder if this is just them being angry about ED not being their dream game, or whether they play all games like this.

"Aha, I have seen this rock in Skyrim before! This is clearly just a computer game!"
"Hang on, this vending machine in CP is identically scratched as that other vending machine! This is clearly just a computer game!"
"Hang on, this football player uses the exact same animation when celebrating as that other dude. This is clearly just a computer game!"

ED is a computer game you bought for a few tenners. It has absolutely stunning planets with infinite variety on the surface. But yes, Billy, you can sometimes see through the cracks and notice the little man behind the curtain.

If this means actual problems now get resolved, then great.

If I had to choose between this and a C+P update, I'd be very happy indeed while weeping for the explorers*

*well, a singular tear

That happens in literally every project, and cutting cool ideas for practical reasons is 90% of the job of a project manager. Any toddler and/or Chris Roberts can sit and say:"Wow, that thing from the latest movie, I want that in my game too!". Then you have professionals who have to decide the best way to use limited resources. And obviously "yes to all" is never the answer.

Well speak for yourself. If I don't get an oxbow lake I'm losing my shiz and flipping tables. And each formation has to be unique otherwise I'm getting even angrier.

Cuts as big as isolating and not supporting 20% of your customer base (+ a few % more when including VR) and leaving a large feature of the expansion (planets) unfinished, somewhat broken and mediocre is in no way normal cost cutting.

I'd argue planets being a more of a prominent part of the game than C+P ... but each to their own I guess ...

He is right though. Planets for 99.9% of people already do their job (fantastically) well. Many gameplay elements not so much. To 'single issue voters' their thing is always the most important, but to the general consumer a more balanced approach is much better.

It's high position on the issue tracker said otherwise. Doubt it was 0.01% of the community that was unhappy with it.

Currently the 4th highest acknowledged issue is 'telemetry for motion simulators'. How many people do you think have a $5000 seat to go with their VR setup? The issue tracker means pretty much nothing. Its just something to keep a small number of people quiet here.
